Audio crackling and USB issues with PCIe Gen 4.0

Running an NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE in my GIGABYTE X570 Aorus Ultra with PCIe gen 4.0, I get audio crackling from the integrated audio chipset and USB (mouse, webcam) glitches/stutters/resets. This happens under certain loads, especially when screen capturing from different applications like TechSmith Camtasia and Microsoft Teams. If I set the PCIe to gen 3.0 in the BIOS, everything seems fine (except my NVME can't run at full speed). I upgraded from an NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti FE (PCIe gen 3.0) to the RTX 3090 and the issues started. This might not be isolated to RTX 3000 series cards or Gigabyte motherboards, as some AMD GPU and other motherboard users have reported similar issues. The commonality seems to be AMD CPUs with peripherals running PCIe gen 4.0.

My system details:

  • CPU/Motherboard: Ryzen 9 3900X, Gigabyte Aorus Ultra v1.0 with F31e BIOS
  • RAM: 128 GB - G.Skill Trident Z Neo (4 x 32 GB) @ 3200 MHz
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE, Game Ready Driver 457.09, Windows HAGS enabled
  • Webcam: Logitech BRIO 4k with latest firmware 2.4 (video 2.0.30, EEPROM 1.18)
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro Version 2004 Build 19041.610
  • Power Supply: Corsair HX1200i in multi-rail OCP

What I have tried so far:

  • Tested front and back analog audio outputs.
  • Tested Bluetooth headset (no audio crackling)
  • Closed out of all game apps
  • Turned off Windows Game Mode
  • Verified power at Max Perf in Nvidia Control Panel -> Managed 3D Settings -> Power Management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance
  • Changed NVIDA PhysX to CPU, also PhysX to GPU.
  • Turned off Xbox Game Bar
  • Installed latest chipset drivers from Gigabyte website
  • Installed latest chipset drivers from AMD
  • Device Manager, View by Resources, removed no longer attached items (e.g., 20280 Ti)
  • Disabled hibernation / fast startup in Windows
  • Set Windows Power management to Ryzen High Performance
  • Disabled HPET in BIOS & Windows
  • Disabled Cool ‘N’ quiet in BIOS
  • Performed clean install of NVIDIA drivers, both via NVIDA and DDU
  • Changed RAM back to factory speed (no XMP)
  • Set PCIe to 3.0 (resolves issue, but limits NMVE performance)
  • Moved analog audio to LCD display audio output, getting audio from 3090 via Display Port (no audio crackling)
  • Moved mouse to USB 3.2 Gen port. This seemed to help.
  • Updated NVIDIA drivers to 457.30.
  • Moved Logitech webcam to USB 3.2 gen 2 port. Possibly fewer webcam glitches.
  • Set DRAM Voltage to Normal (from Auto)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello,

I have send my motherboard to the reseller after 2 month of test with the Asus SAV for instabillity of my system after all USB shutdown. It happend 2-3 times per week.

I have some Headphone disconnection all day.

 

My config is:

CPU : RYZEN 3600 stock

Motherboard : Asus ROG strix B550 e-gaming

RAM : GSKILL Trident Z Neo 32GB 4X8GB 3600 CL16

GPU : GIGABYTE RTX 2070 SUPER Gaming OC 8GD

PSU : Be Quiet Dark power pro 11 650W

Sound : ROG Strix GO 2.4 connected in Audio USB-C port

Sound : Asus VG258QR with Display port

Storage : Sabrent Rocket nvme PCI 3.1 1TB

Storage : Sabrent Rocket nvme PCI 4.0 1TB

Storage : Western Digital WD2003FZEX Black SATA 2TB

USB connected :

Logitech HOTAS X56 in USB 2.0

Logitech G815 in USB 3.0

Logitech G502 HERO in USB 3.0

Windows Version- 20H2

 

I tried all AMD chipset driver

I tried all bios from ASUS since January (because now my MB is in warranty at the resseller)

I am also experiencing motherboard wide USB disconnects I believe are associated to my Ryzen 5900x while used with a 3090.  Unpredictable but ONLY have occurred under low load while on the desktop. 

Becoming a major issue as my CPU cooler doesn't reconnect readily leaving my 5900x without cooling when this issue happens. 

Have tested multiple GPUs and multiple processors.  This issue only occurs when using RTX 30 series cards along with the 5900x.  

Converting to PCIEx3.0 reduces the frequency, but cripples my NVME 4.0 drives and GPU as a result.

AMD - Let's get a fix for this, your high end users are being crippled by your technology right now.  Unacceptable error. 

System:

MOBO: X570 Razer Taichi - ASRock

Processor: 5900x

RAM: 64GB 3600 CL16 GSkill Neo Trident

GPU: EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3

With your help, we believe we have isolated the root cause and developed a solution that addresses a range of reported symptoms, including (but not limited to): USB port dropout, USB 2.0 audio crackling (e.g., DAC/AMP combos), and USB/PCIe Gen 4 exclusion.

AMD has prepared AGESA 1.2.0.2 to deploy this update, and we plan to distribute 1.2.0.2 to our motherboard partners for integration in about a week. Customers can expect downloadable BIOSes containing AGESA 1.2.0.2 to begin with beta updates in early April. The exact update schedule for your system will depend on the test and implementation schedule for your vendor and specific motherboard model. If you continue to experience intermittent USB connectivity issues after updating your system to AGESA 1.2.0.2, we encourage you to download the standalone AMD Bug Report Tool and open a ticket with AMD Customer Support.

AGESA 1.2.0.1 patch A appears to finally resolve this issue for me!
