RX9070xt + Quest3 + DCS and various OpenXR runtimes

Hi,

I have trouble getting my sons RX9070xt to perform in VR with a Quest 3, so i did some research and trials.
It seems various OpenXR runtimes give provide very different results, in image quality and performance.

The system
Ryzen 7 5800x3d, x570 AGESA ComboAm4v2PI 1.2.0.E, 128GB DDR4-3200, RX9070xt, Windows 11 24H2, DCS 2.9.15.9599

What i've learned

  1. Use the latest drivers. The biggest performance gain i had was stepping up from Adrenalin 25.3.2 to 25.4.1 with yesterdays release.
  2. Choose the right OpenXR runtime. Choosing the wrong OpenXR runtime will not only result in bad performance, but also bad image quality due to the used codecs.
  3. CPU load. The Adrenalin drivers seem to be pretty CPU bound when it comes to performance in VR. CPU loads on the tested 5800x3d above 40-50%
not only cause some microstodders but also massive decrease in FPS especially in combination with Meta-/QuestLink.

Meta-/QuestLink
Meta-/QuestLink gave me the worst image and the worst performance. The codec really messes up the images

and horrible performance. The QuestLink OpenXR runtime is quite unusable for DCS.

SteamLink

SteamLink gave me acceptable image quality and the way better performance. The codec still messes up the images,
but the image is less blurry and the SteamVR OpenXR performs way better then Meta-/QuestLink.

VirtualDesktop
VirtualDesktop ($25) lets you choose the codec to use and therefore gives you brilliant image quality. VirtualDesktop also lets
you choose which OpenXR runtime to use beneath. The VDXR gave me yet the best performance with the RX9070xt.

My 5¢
Even with all that tweaking, saddly, performance is mediocre at best with the current drivers. 😕
What else can i do to improve performance?

P.s. Dear AMD, with all the trouble in VR it would be nice to get a voucher for VirtualDesktop when buying a AMD graphics card, as it currently the only OpenXR runtime that is usable on AMD.
