I dont know where to start with my poor english.

First thing first: Hello all!

I'm just a regular, 31 yrs. old, father of one daughter. I have a bare minimal time for play, because of my job, and my family. But this graphics card is ruining my minimal time for play. I dont have high expectations, i just want to... surpise surprise: play. I'm just playing some wow classic, grounded, and some cod 2 (yes, the old one :I)

My issue is the next: Overheating.

I have a Sapphire Radeon RX 480 nitro+ 8GB OC graphics card, with stock amd software settings. Whenever i start the game, a 15-20 minutes later the GPU temperature reaches 90C, and my PC shuts down. Always... No exceptions.. I tried to play with the vents controller, nothing changed.

What i tried:

• Completely cleaned my pc ( as i do every quarter of years)

• Replaced thermal paste on gpu

• Replaced thermal pads on gpu

• purchased a new **bleep**ing computer case for good airflow (Aerocool aero one frost [frost my ass])

A GPU benchmark software named "UserBenchmark" crashed on the gpu testing. Now in my final desperation, i figured out (thanks to the google and the people of the internet), if i undervolt and underclock my gpu, then i have a chance.

I want to ask your opinion about these settings:

With these "tuning" settings, my PC not crashing anymore, and GPU benchmark not dying.

I want to ask, if these settings are good and i'm not harm my gpu in long term? Do you guys can give me any advice, or should i just stay with these settings?

Small observation: I got a little bit better fps in games

I noticed you haven't tried to create an aggressive Fan Profile in Radeon Settings so that the GPU fans will run at full speed at a lower temperature.

Also have you physically checked to see if the GPU fans are running at full speed when it is overheating? Possibly one or more fans are not working at they should be.

Run OCCT GPU Test and see if it shuts down during the test. Keep an eye on Temperatures and GPU Fan speeds and PSU outputs.

You can try the PSU Test also if you have a good quality PSU installed. Basically it runs both CPU and GPU stress tests at the same time putting maximum stress on the PSU.

Looks like the source of all my problem was the AMD Software...... I just uninstalled it, and i'm currently on stock Windows Update driver. Everything is perfectly fine...

windows is just installing amd drivers , so no the problem is certainly some corruption in your windows files (not using ddu or something like this).. happy to hear that you can enjoy your gpu again, maybe you can mark the thread as solved

Hi, did you, after the gpu repaste, tighten things well? 1250 that must be either something wrong with cooling or a really bad bin.

Try gently pressing/tighten the card heatsink with your fingers while at high temps, see if temps drop. Carefully! Dont get hurt. Or avoid doing it if you are not comfortable. But if you did a gpu repaste, I guess you are ok. 

I was able to get away with 1090mv 1400mhz with maximum 65C on my RoG Strix RX 480. Ok, the Strix cooler is big, but still..

Do you have a All In One or Air Cooler? A big block just above the gpu can heat soak the gpu and contribute to higher temps. If you can, undervolt the CPU as well. 

Undervolting wont do any harm, other than be unstable if you go too low on voltage.

Keep fine tuning voltages after checking the card cooling

gpu "overheating" should throttle not shutting down pc except if there is something wrong with cooling, are you sure everything is ok after you repaste it ?  ... besides , are your cpu temps ok ?

edit : ok didn't saw you solved you problem , you should mark your own answer as "solution" even if it's more of a workaround

Okay guys,i have a 100% confirmation about the amd software causing the problems. I reinstalled again, i stayed on a location in WoW, where i get 100%gpu usage and 77-80C.

Then i uninstalled AMD software, i let windows update the driver. Windows uses 2022 October driver. I logged in, still in the same place i got 70% gpu usage with fix 73C. I mark this post as solved.

I have similar problem with my 7900xtx speedster merc. Playing king Arthur and gpu temp is 71 but junction temp hits 95 on 100% gpu usage. Only when I tune fans it drops on 90 but then is noisy as a helicopter any solution to that ??

as you seem worried about 95° :

95° junction temp is perfectly fine for 7900xtx @100% in addition if your merc is an oc version, this is nothing to do with gpu temps readings (gpu temps vs gpu junction temp).. don't be misguided ... only at 110 it's begin to throttle , so you have good leeway

Here i am again. I unmarked my post as solution, because the issue occured again. Installed Daymare 1998 game, uncapped fps, and after 5 minutes of play, my pc crashed. I can only play if i cap fps, or undervolt gpu. Sad..

I have this gpu since release. My specs:

I5-7600K, 32GB DDR4 RAM, Gigabyte B250-DS3H, Samsung 24" curved monitor 144hz

While I can attest to GPUs out living their projected lifespan, it could just be your GPU is getting old and having issues. I don't have much experience with the RX 400 and 500 series cards, but if it isn't a power issue, I would chock it up to the GPU being over 6 years old. Sorry I can't help with the issues you're facing. 

Does the RX 400 series throttle if it starts overheating, or is it just a situation where it will hard shutdown if it gets too hot?

It’s just simply turns off the gpu, while i can hear the background sound. Only a pc restart helps. Then its time to invest … any recommendations for this cpu? I also forgot to mention: i have a new 700w psu.

Before you go all out on a new GPU, I would like to see if @johnnyenglish or @BigAl01 knows a thing or two about this sort of issue.

I would buy a new GPU at this point, probably a 6750 XT if money was tight.

The Sapphire RX480 is a poor dual fan design but it shouldn't be doing more than 80ºC

My personal experience tells me:
I've recommended these GPU's to so many people and no problems whatsoever. One colleague of mine blew one sapphire but he did it while mining and pushing it to the limit. Ran for months at 85/90C then it just died. (also, it was reference blower style design)
The rest are still alive and gaming with less than 75ºC (depends on the brand). Mine is alive and healthy on the secondary computer, never doing more than 60/65ºC but it is a 2.5 slot plus 3 fan design from RoG as big as the RX6800. That's why I could easily OC it to 1400.

Having said that, I strongly believe that the heatsink could be the culprit, not making perfect contact as it should. Kind of remembers me the Strix 5700XT incident. A simple squeeze and it would drop like 15/20ºC

If you want to save a buck, just cap the fps to match the vertical sync or keep it undervolted and underclocked. You may lose like 5/10fps on average but the show goes on.

OR

Get a 6750XT fast while you still can or if just want playable 1080p, the 6650XT

Strange game that, installed the demo. All graphics maxed on 1440p

Vsync off locked me to half refresh rate, in game menu fluctuated from 30-1000 fps (yes 1000+ fps, not a typo).

Vsync on back to 120fps, some in game menu options still pushed 1000 fps (bad game engine or utilization by Dev.?). 

Could be just the demo, if its not been uodated?

Final solution to my problem: i replaced my gpu.

i found a guy in town who traded in my gpu, plus i needed to pay him 50 bucks. He given me a TUF RX5600XT. I hope i made a good deal. No heating problems so far.
