Fsr 4 for RDNA 3 Cards

In theory, RDNA 3 cards should enable FSR 4 by simply changing the algorithm to INT8 or Bfloat16 core instead of FP8, or implementing FP8 in software. However, both these options come with difficult challenges, including potentially compromising performance or quality. For AMD to push that out, they would need to see considerable user demand and invest in a version modified to leverage the capabilities of RDNA 3. In practice, however, due to the technical and business aspects involved, it is unlikely they will support this officially—but a custom-adapted version would still be a theoretical possibility.

We all need to get together and show our interest in adding this feature to older video cards, I'm sure we won't be forgotten.

Do everything possible to get AMD's attention.

My 7900 XTX need it !!!        🤞

Bro, I just can't wait to see how FSR 4 is going to perform with my 7900xtx... 24gb for sure will come up very handy.

Just saw a video that the Linux guys behind DXVK and Proton already have FSR 4 enabled on RDNA 3 on Linux. It is now just a matter of waiting for them to move it through their development process to get it stable and optimised.

I don't know much about the hybrid CNN + transformer model AMD trained for FSR 4, but I feel they were either rushing to get FSR 4 out and just never thought about training the model using things like FP4 which RDNA 3 has. There is an active github repo where it is being worked on and tested.

Hey There

We all hope that the RDNA 3 Cards will receive FSR 4, (I have the same card) but I had contact with AMD about this subject and this is what they said:

"Thank you for contacting AMD.

I understand you had questions regarding FSR4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution version 4).

Please note, as tech support specialists, we are not briefed on future updates or decisions related to FSR 4 compatibility.

That being said, currently, FSR4 is limited to the RX 9000 series GPUs because it relies on the advanced machine learning capabilities and hardware acceleration of the RDNA 4 architecture, which are not available in RDNA 3 GPUs like the RX 7900XTX."

Ofcourse we also have AI in our cards but the rx9000 series have better machine learning.

Personally I think for now it will stay on the RX9000 Series because for sales and marketing, maybe in the future they will make a FSR 4 for the RDNA 3 GPU's but than a bit different cause we don't have the hardware capabilities of the rx9000 series

My gut tells me that was just a cookie cutter reply.

If I remember correctly, one of the things the AMD executives said last September as they made it official they had killed high end for RDNA 4 at least, was they had pivoted the entire team doing FSR to AI (upscaling and frame gen) around January of 2024 and one of the reasons was to boost battery life on handhelds.

So unless AMD is going to outright stop manufacturing and selling RDNA 3 and 3.5 based APUs, what they are saying currently makes no sense. Unless they were not certain what they were doing when they killed off high-end RDNA 4 last year. The exec also talked about AMD having something for enthusiasts that will use chiplet technology. While that doesn't mean RDNA 3, the easy win would be FSR 4 on the chiplet design SKUs of RDNA 3. That is unless they are planning to release UDNA this year or a dual chip version of the RX 9070 XT like they did for R9 295X2 which both seem highly unlikely.

The entire marketing or upselling people with RDNA 3 to buying RDNA 4 that people online are saying also makes zero sense to me. I own a RX 7900 XTX and game at 4K. Outside of ray tracing (and there is really only a small number of games with there is a meaningful improvement i.e. from a display refresh rate standpoint not fps number) there is no benefit gained from replacing the RX 7900 XTX with the RX 9070 XT. FSR 4 simply isn't enough of a reason and not at current prices or even at MSRP. Put it this way, I spend $1,200 on my Sapphire Nitro+ RX 7900 XTX. Why would I spend bother selling (for at best $800 bast on current prices on eBay) to then spend $800-$850 to get on average 10% less gaming performance on a RX 9070 XT just for FSR 4?

Even when I think about the RX 6900 XT I have in my Threadripper workstation, I would still just wait for whatever AMD do with UDNA or whatever the RX 1090XT(X) is based on (if AMD even return to the high end in the next gen of GPUs) before buying a new AMD GPU. I would then swap out the RX 6900 XT  RX 7900 XTX. I have a RTX 2080ti in the Threadripper build as well. So, it's not like I'm chasing the latest and greatest from a professional AI/ML standpoint. The value proposition of the RX 9070 XT just isn't there for me not to just wait or even jump to team green and buy a used RTX 4090 if I really want the extra gaming and AI performance.

If all I had were the RX 6900 XT  (or RX 7800 XT) and my Radeon VII which is in a box somewhere, then I could see a reason to go for the RX 9070 XT but not from a RX 7900 XTX or RX 7900 XT.

What do you mean by "one of the reasons was to boost battery life on handhelds"?

(In my country, handhelds are mobile devices)

Sorry, my English is not that great, but I'm learning

I have an 7900xtx as well I bought it for 1000 Euros, love the card love the performance, I think FSR will come to the high end cards only later because they wanna sell their 9070xt and 9070

But AMD will not go to high-end gpu's for a long time because of costs and they wanna regain market share, only 10 to 15% of the players have an AMD Graphics Card,  and developers no longer want to optimize their games for GPU market share of 10 to 15% , that's why they stay with 1440P enthiousasts and working more with developers to regain some control over the market share and so that developers will again work more with AMD to optimize their games for their graphics cards.

i know there are 3rd party apps like Optiscaler which is working just fine in (some) games with my 6900 xt so... yeah, this would be amazing and i did asked myself why AMD seems to ignore older models. wonder if their team has time and resources for this tho' and even if, will they do it? kinda doubt they will tbh

And with optiscaler you can use fsr 4 on gpu's lower than the RDNA 4?

because I have seen in videos that it's not working on the RX7000 series

i don't think it can be running on RDNA3 gpu on windows ,at least they are still figuring the way to let it work normally

well, look here https://github.com/cdozdil/OptiScaler and go to About section, everything is explained there better than i can.
