Catalyst 12.9 beta == No more Xorg dependency

Hey, looks like with the 12.9 beta AMD finally did it!

I am able to run OpenCL applications without running X server!

Just some issues I have now with ADL:

* fan speed cannot be set without running X server (temperatures can be obtained though)

* device strings cannot be obtained using ADL without X

Are there any plans to document that GPU rings feature?

Also COMPUTE variable is not working anymore and since without X obviously DISPLAY cannot be used too, there is no way to control that (currently).

No dependency on the X server is a must for multi user HPC environments (the other one is the ability to kill a process hanging the GPU).

Great news!

Re: Catalyst 12.9 beta == No more Xorg dependency

My system is debian testing and I am running my own application (haven't tried the SDK examples yet).

P.S if you have set COMPUTE, please unset it. It looks like it does not work at all, any value set will cause your application to fail.

Could you give some more details on how you have achieved this? Sounds promising, but it seems that "just" installing 12.9 and launching from a terminal is not enough?
