Hey @Weber462 ,
Just to confirm, we're talking about ab workouts, right?
If so, this is something I SHOULD be doing haha.
Edit: I read this too fast, and the label threw me off. I am learning with y'all!
Lol, not quite. But now that you mention it, it does sound like a workout routine. "Gotta get my BOINC's in for today."
IT DOES! Hahaha, also shows you that I do not know much about distributive computing. Hope I gave you a good laugh for your day
Also, taking this as a learning opportunity because I have now researched more in-depth about what this is. Do you have a distributed computer system and how do you use it?
I entered one in the "rig of the Month" "Debbie". Its a great concept that started with SETI@HOME. Its a open source program where Everyday PC users can donate Computer cycles to help with research. Everything from protein folding to Pulsar searches. I think there are currently about 20 active research programs. I am thinking AMD should start a group.
A few threadrippers can do ALOT or research. 😃
Wow, this is fascinating and incredible. Thank you for taking the time to share that with me. I will definitely bring this up with our team and see how we could potentially support others like this in the future.
Interested to see others that comment and share if they do this at home too 🙂 Thanks for starting a post about this!
absolutely! 😃
Didn't know if anyone here was into distributive computing.
Did Folding@home both a long time ago and then after a long pause, during covid. Undervolted and clocked my machine to keep it cool and reduce cost. Nowadays price of electricity here in Europe is pretty bad and running your machine under load 24/7 is not something many - I believe - do right now.
Agreed. I have my 5950s in ECO and underclocked the GPUS. I actually like that part of crunching, Finding the efficiency sweet spot in the different BOINC programs. I know some of the people in the BOINC community (especially in Europe and Australia ) have slowed down quite a bit due to energy crunch.
I've been folding my laundry since high school! Just kidding, just kidding! 😋
I think what you all are doing is awesome, distributed computing. And I'm happy to learn that you do underclock your rigs.
@Weber462 I like your idea for a Group. And just to be clear, are you thinking of a Red Team Distributed Computing Group (as in "Folding@home")?
Actually I did some digging and found AMD has a active BOINC group!
Team = AMD Users

And a little side fact, the 5950x is currently number #1 in total credit!

Ill have to look into Folding at Home a little later this afternoon.
I had a Folding@home team in the top 300 or 400 before Covid hit and all kinds of people joined and pushed me down past 1000. I haven't folder for 2-3 years now. I thought about creating a new team with my gaming group, or reviving the old one to have a head start. It's hard to get people interested though. https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=231478 I'm Berserkre
ill be very interested once i get my hands on a 7900xt. Give me a hollar if you start a team up again.
Someone tried to start a Folding@Home Red Team group a while back and it never went anywhere. This was before Covid. The post is probably still out there somewhere. It's hard to get people to join and stay engaged. The software can tend to require some babysitting, and I think the spike in the electric bill really surprises people. I could put all my gaming machines on a team, but I'm already thousands of $$ into the setup and jacking my electric bill up to the moon doesn't sound too good LOL. Plus it really is hard on your equipment, just like mining.
I can help you set up if you ever want to try it out again. There are preferences available that let you limit time and even cores. Every project is a little different. But like you said, i would recommend looking into the projects and see if anything interest you first. If something does, it fun to follow and get involved with. Its for a great cause, and somewhat addicting lol
Guys! What's the difference between folding and mining for crypto?
Ive never mined crypto before, but is assume is somewhat similar. I am into Gridcoin, but that is a crypto solely based on BOINC participation. So instead on solving an algorithm like on most PoW crypto) Gridcoin give you credit for contributing to science via BOINC. BOINC has been around since the 1990s and started with SETI@home. Gridcoin started in 2014 (?). Every BOINC project uses different hardware in different ways. For example I help with a project called Einstein@home which looks through radio telescope data for Pulsars. I have it currently set up to run on my GPUs (this project will pushes GPUs petty hard). So currently 2 GPU's in coordination with 4 CPU cores to crunch this. Another one I run is milkyway@home (this project looks for dark matter among many other things), this I have set up as a GPU project also, but is a very light workload (20-50%). Some of the other projects just use CPU, some just use AMD GPU's some just Nvedia. It all depends. Its a very fun community. They also use some heavy hardware. There are many people that use EPYC and other server hardware to crunch the CPU dependent projects. It a fun hobby, and you get to see how the project progresses and see results when they come in. This is a (somewhat outdated) list of articles published.

PS im VERY excited for AMD Siena CPU. you will have to give the community a heads up if you hear anything. 😃
Just to let you all know, the original AMD Forums has, what little is left of the team, that does Folding@home. Back several years ago there were quite of few participants. The AMD Forums Team # is 34106. I guess when the old AMD Forum was taken down or moved to this forum most people moved on or just stopped all together. I just recently started folding for them some again. There also appears to still be a couple of the original members still folding.
hell yeah! ill check it out. I learned about distributive computing via folding at home about 5years ago, then went BOINC, but now have a enough hardware to try both. I feel like there is such an untapped research with this tech. Ill look it up, thanks dude!
Asteroids@home project back up and running! just an FYI if anyone interested.

I've run Folding@Home on and off for a while now. currently ranked 63,354 on the leaderboard. I've crunched BOINC & SETI as well. But F@H has more meaning to me than finding E.T. If you get a new team going for AMD (Official) let me know (I looked and didn't find one). You can find me here: Folding@home | Statistics (foldingathome.org)
Nice! Will do. Right now, I'm crunching under Gridcoin. They are currently voting on a F@H Adaptor which will end in 3 weeks (when it passes, (it will) it will bring F@H into their network). Im gunna see where that goes first. But i definitely five you a holler. I just love Distributed computing. Doesn't matter if its BOINC or F@H. 😀
I just checked my daily production in F@H. And folding on my GPU only is producing between 2.5 & 2.6 million ppd. not bad for just a single GPU.
