No signal detected by monitor

I just bought a monitor to be added as a second display for my laptop.

It worked for the first 2 minutes but then went dark after giving the message "no signal detected".

It spontaneously comes alive for 20 seconds around every 3 hours.

Can anybody please give me some advice about what adjustments I can make? I'm desperate to get this to work.

Information

GPU: AMD Radeon(TM) R3 Graphics

Monitor: Dell P2210

Monitor -> VGA -> HDMI -> Laptop

Actions Already Taken

#1 Updated GPU drivers

#2 Disabled drivers > rebooted > enabled drivers

#3 Uninstalled drivers > rebooted > reinstalled drivers

#4 Tested cables on other devices (works)

#5 Checked monitor input settings are correct

#6 Set laptop and monitor resolutions to be the same

#7 Ensured Hz Frequency the same

I read online somewhere that it could be that the HDMI port is bypassing the GPU and going straight to the CPU. But how does one go about assessing whether this is the problem and making adjustments in a laptop?

Are you using an Active HD HDMI>VGA Adapter?

What is the exact Make & Model of your Laptop (Serial number if possible) and Windows and AMD Driver installed?
