I picked up a used Asus Radeon HD 5870 for my "project rig." Installed Saturday morning. There were a ton of reliability issues with it over the weekend. Most recently, the fan will be at full speed while the machine is POSTing. I believe this is abnormal because, during the moments when the card is cooperating, the fan runs at idle during the POST process. Also, since the fan starts blasting when Windows bugchecks, I've learned to associate it with problems....
Is the video card hardware broken or breaking? What do you make of this fan behavior? It's happening during POST, so drivers are not even in the picture. I haven't been able to run my OpenCL applications for more than about 10 minutes before Windows bugchecks (if the thing boots at all). Thanks- BGU
