Description of Original Problem: 6800 XT Under-performing / low power consumption in Games

Troubleshooting:

Upgraded from Vega 64 to RX 6800 XT

Tested the following games and Benchmarks.

Battlefield 5 (frame limit set to 144 and 200)
Hunt: Showdown 1.5.1 (frame limit set to 144 and >9000)
CSGO
Conan Exiles 2.4 (frame limit set to 144 and uncapped)
3DMark - Time Spy DX 12
3DMark - Fire Strike Extreme DX11

In all games, I see the same behavior: both Power Consumption and Clock Speed are very low. Disabled any frame limit in game or set it to max.

However, in Benchmarks I see the opposite. Results look very good and power consumption and clock speed is on the level you expect.

I have used DDU to remove drivers before installing the RX 6800 XT and then installed Adrenalin 21.4.1. Since the performance was bad, I tried other versions (21.2.2, 20.11.3 and 20.12.2 ) as well. In each case I started Windows in Safe Mode without Network and used DDU with recommended settings.

After 5 different drivers, I had enough and formatted my SSD to install a fresh version of Windows 10. Installed AMD Chipset 2.13.27.501 and Adrenalin 21.4.1 and also upgraded to 21.5.1 that was just released today, but it all remains the same.

CPU

In all Games and Benchmark Tests, the AMD 2700x utilization was good. Not a single tread was hitting its maximum.

MEMORY

Usually, I am running my RAM in 2667 Mhz.
In the manual of the Motherboard it says to use 2133 when using 4 modules of single rank memory on a Pinnacle Ridge. However, I also tested it with 2933 but in Games it did not really change the FPS, and I gained less than 100 points in 3DMark test.

The RX 6800 XT TUF OC has a bios switch and I tried both Power Mode and Quite Mode, with no change.

AMD Adrenalin Settings.

Vertical Refresh: Off

Freesync: on / off / AMD optimized

Enhanced Sync: on and off

Chill: Off

AA: Application settings

Tessellation Mode: All 3 options

Forced minimum clock speed to 2100 Mhz and +25 Power Target in the tuner.

Tuning Controller Preset: Quiet, Balanced and Rage.

Windows 10:

I was also in the Registry to disable ULPS and Windows Power Plan to turn off any Power Saving options on CPU and PCI Express.

Also turned Windows Game mode on and off.

In the end it's all the same. Benchmarks scores are top and Games FPS are bottom.

oday I downloaded the radeon-rx6900xt-rx6800xt-adrenalin-20.12.2-dec17 from AMD, after a DDU I tested again.

All games have improved the performance Battlefield 5 (+40 FPS in Ultra) and CSGO FPS jumped, Hunt: Showdown increased a little. Stuttering was gone in all games.

CPU Tread is not at it's limit and GPU does also have a lot of reserves left.

As soon as I installed the new driver 21.4.1 It was back to low performance and power consumption.

The AMD 6800 XT does definitely have some driver issues, maybe something causing a conflict with the rest of my hardware.

I went out and bought a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite with BIOS version F30. I used the same AMD 2700x CPU and RAM at 2933 Mhz. The GPU performance are now normal.

Battlefield 5 ran about 110 in average in Ultra at 1440p. That is about 60 FPS more than it did with the old Motherboard, and with no stuttering. It's also 40 FPS more than my Vega 64.

CS:GO also performed well, with around 200 FPS and no stuttering. Hunt Showdown was doing alright, but here I think that the game is just not optimized well enough for AMD GPUs. At least not Vega 64 and 6800 XT, but I hope the latter will improve when then cards get more available.

So there was some conflict between the card and motherboard, I just don't know why it happened in games only. Both Motherboards had the same results in 3DMark.

Of course now the CPU is the bottleneck, but with a X570 Motherboard I will be able to plop a 5900x in later.

Honestly, that doesn't look peculiar to me, I think everyone is around those numbers.

Notes:

1. Why don't you put the RAM to 3200Mhz?

2. You have a 2700x Cpu that could be holding you back a bit.

3. Regarding the stutters, you can try running the game full screen, disabling AMD Freesync on Adrenaline cause it still broken, you can use Rivatunner to set the fps to 120hz cause it looks like that's the most you setup can push.

There is still a lot of work ahead for AMD regarding the drivers, so we are all anxious to see them fixed.

To be honest, I don't know how you can even say that. My VEGA 64 had better numbers than the 6800 XT.

In Medium settings I would be between 80-100 FPS in Battlefield 5. The 6800 XT can't even deliver that running in Low settings, as you can see in the screenshot.

Also, a 6800 XT running with a clock speed of 600Mhz using 73 Watt in Battlefield 5, I am sorry but that is not normal. And at the same time the 2700x has not a single thread running at maximum.

1. I don't want to OC my RAM, even at 2933 Mhz I need to tweak around to pass MemTest86. I also tested running it in 1866 Mhz, none of the CPU threads were at max load and I lost 10-15 FPS in Battlefield 5.

2. Yes, the 2700x is a bottleneck, but in all the test and games I tried, it did not have a single tread running at it's max. As I could see, someone with a 2700X and a 6800 (non XT) got an average of 90 - 110 FPS in Battlefield 5 at 1440p Ultra with 2400Mhz Ram. Compared to my 40-60 FPS that is a huge difference. My Vega 64 could even give me 60-80 in 1440p Ultra on the 2700x and here the Vega 64 was the bottleneck. However, the 6800 XT has not pushed my CPU to the limit in any of the mentioned games.

3. Tried it all. Also, I set my games to match the 144Hz of my screens. My 2700x and Vega 64 could push the mentioned games between 100-144 FPS. The 6800 XT cannot even push CSGO at 1440p/low to stable 120 FPS, often dropping below 90. Before I had an average around 260 FPS.
