Handheld PC Gaming

The handheld PC market is really exploding in popularity since the launch of the Steam Deck.

Now the Steam Deck is getting a facelift with the inclusion of a new 7.4" OLED display that remains 1280 x 800, but includes features like HDR and a refresh rate of 90hz. This is also features 16GB of faster memory, faster Wifi in Wifi 6E, and, hopefully, a longer battery life.

Before the Steam Deck we had options like Ayeneo, OneXPlayer, and GDP Win. These however had extremely high price tags, when comparing to what is available now.

The ROG Ally "Extreme" with the the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip is probably my favorite design, with 8 cores and 16 threads, compared to the Steam Deck with a 4 core 8 thread CPU. This handheld also features a 7" FHD 1080p screen at 120hz. Even "Non Extreme" ROG Ally has 6 cores and 12 threads in the AMD Ryzen Z1, and has an integrated GPU based on RDNA3 with 4 compute units, compared to the 12 compute units on the Z1 Extreme. Both have 16GB of LPDDR5 @6400MT/s. All of this with a competitive price of $619.99 USD as of right now on https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-ally-7-120hz-fhd-1080p-gaming-handheld-amd-ryzen-z1-extreme-pr... for the "Extreme", and $599.99 for the "Non Extreme".

For the person who wants more out of a handheld PC, there is the OneXPlayer OneXFly. This features the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U with 8 cores 16 threads with a turbo frequency of 5.1Ghz, and the RDNA 3 AMD Radeon 780M with 12 compute units. The screen is 7" with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 120hz. There are two options both with 32GB LPDDR5X @ 7500mhz. The storage capacity starts at 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe up to 2TB. The price starts pretty steep at $1099.00 USD here https://onexplayerstore.com/products/onexfly?variant=46620430598438.

I can't sleep on the specs on the Legion Go either. Both configurations look pretty powerful.

As more people adopt mobile gaming and computing, more companies are joining in, throwing in new ideas, making the space competitive and pushing eachother to push more and more performance. I like to see it.

With all of this, what would you like to see in a handheld? Is there anything I didn't cover that you have been keeping an eye on? Are you just waiting for the Steam Deck 2? What do you think of the handheld PC becoming more mainstream, and becoming a viable way to game?

A Brief History of Video Game Swords

  • The first video game swords appeared in the 1970s and 1980s, with games such as Adventure and The Legend of Zelda featuring swords as primary weapons.
  • In the 1990s, fighting games such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat introduced swords as special moves or finishing blows.
  • The 2000s saw the rise of role-playing games (RPGs) such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Age, which featured a wide variety of swords as both weapons and collectibles.
