I've been having this issue since Crimson 16.1 came out and ever since then I've been waiting and waiting, hoping for a fix. However, it never came.
My issue is pretty simple: when you try to install Crimson, the system freezes and then BSOD with THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER.
My system at the moment is as follows:
I tried every methods that I could dig from this forum and other forums:
Only thing that I haven't tried is installing driver with just single GPU, but I cannot do that because of my custom built watercooling. Another method I didn't try is using different monitor.
I have bunch of dump as well, and submitted bug reports (which never got addressed).
I'm currently stuck at Crimson 15.12. Anything higher causes my system to freeze and die in horrible death.
Personally I'm kind of getting sick and tired of troubleshooting so this is a desparate plea for help. If any AMD rep is reading this, I'm seriously willing to take my PC to 1 Commerce Valley Drive so I can help you guys debug this issue (hell, I used to work there.)

Un-freaking-believable. Six months have passed since the release of Crimson 16 drivers, and AMD still cannot figure out what causes THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER. Unfortunately I bought a FreeSync monitor, otherwise I'd migrate to nVidia card LONG time ago. Thanks for reminding us, why we shouldnt ever buy your crappy hardware, AMD.
Update: How I fixed crashes on my R9 290
You could try and update your mobo bios? Also have you got any AMD apps installed like Raptr? If so uninstall.
Hope this helps.
I have the exact same problem. Constant THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER with the newer drivers and the old one is giving me unplayable fps. I have tried the same things as you have and found a temporary solution. By entering BIOS before windows it works perfectly for some reason...
Thanks but I have tried those method and didn't work.
Ok I understand.
The problem here is crimson.
Do you have that Win 8 quick boot option turned on in the BIOS? If so, try turning that off.
I just tried disabling quick boot but did not work. Still crashing.
That's pretty weird actually, I tried your method (going into BIOS before installing driver) but did not work.
I had also that problem, it hapens because crimson drivers had a problem while installing with Wind Defender. I did downloaded DDU -> start Windows in SAFE MODE -> and completely uninstall drivers with DDU.. Restart system make a fresh install of drivers and problem solved for me
Could you please fix or at least take a look at this issue?
