Root cause of latency

Hello all,

I have a completely fresh installation of windows 10 pro and I have kept only the mandatory apps.

My HW config is:

MSI X570 A-pro

Ryzen 7 2700X

2 x 8 GB Corsair DDR 4 3200

Samsung 960 evo M2

Sapphire Radeon Nitro+ 5700XT.

All latest drivers from motherboard site (chipset, Ethernet, etc but also the latest from AMD or Realtek) and AMD Radeon 20.12.1 (but also all the previous versions).

The problem I have is that I have latency in the online games and I cannot verify if the latency comes from the system or from the network.

I have to say that all the tests that I have performed on the network are looking perfect and even better than my teammates'.

I have pingplotter running and no obvious problem is visible. Slightly better ping that the rest of the team, no packet loss, no jitter. Even the game ping tool has better results compared to others.

On the other hand, the PC looks very powerfull for this game (Warface). My mates play with much much lower spec PCs.

The problem is that the others see me 200-700ms earlier that I see them. When I see them, they have already fired 5-10 bullets and then I start shooting so I usually die earlier.

This has been discovered by parallel video capturing playin against each other and compared the videos afterwards.

The question, how can I verify where really the lag (latency) resides, in the network or in the PC?

Latency monitor shows some DPC latency, which I do not know if it is normal or not. What ever I do with the isntallation of the OS and the drivers this DPC latency is there.

I have to say that there are certain periods either hours or days where the problem disappears and the performance is excellent.

Any ideas are more than welcome, because I ran out of other things to try.

Thanks in advance

what is your monitor? did you set it to 144hz (or higher); did you enable "Overdrive" in Monitor Menu?

did you enable "AMD FreeSync" or V-SYNC or do you force tripple buffering?

can you check the game forum - is there a bug on AMD known?

PC: R7 2700X @PBO + RX 580 4G (1500MHz/2000MHz CL16) + 32G DDR4-3200CL14 + 144hz 1ms FS P + 75hz 1ms FS
Laptop: R5 2500U @30W + RX 560X (1400MHz/1500MHz) + 16G DDR4-2400CL16 + 120Hz 3ms FS

Thanks for replying,

My monitor is the Samsung LC27HG70QQUXEN

I have freesync off

refresh rate 144Hz

Low input Lag On

and it is connected with Display Port.

If connected to HDMI with the Samsung  HDMI cable cannot go higher than 120Hz.

Additionally, no triple buffering or V-Sync enabled and no known issues with AMD for the Warface

Thanks

The question still remains, how can I verify where really the lag (latency) resides, in the network or in the PC?

@DimitrisP

do you use WLAN/WIFI?

because your problem is strange - and i cant reproduce it here

PC: R7 2700X @PBO + RX 580 4G (1500MHz/2000MHz CL16) + 32G DDR4-3200CL14 + 144hz 1ms FS P + 75hz 1ms FS

Directly attached to the VDSL router with a cat 6A UTP cable. The PC is the only device on this router and the wifi is disabled. All other devices use a different router/VDSL line.

Is there a way to pinpoint the latency? Is it in the network or inside the PC up to the monitor?

do a ping test to a server near where the gameserver is related

also test jitter

PC: R7 2700X @PBO + RX 580 4G (1500MHz/2000MHz CL16) + 32G DDR4-3200CL14 + 144hz 1ms FS P + 75hz 1ms FS

Hello again and thanks for your reply,

I have been using Pingplotter to the game server IP address, along with my team mates from Greece and more specifically from Athens area, in order to have common reference.

Actually, my pingplotter results are at least the same or better compared to my team mates. (Therefore, I consider the latency inside the PC-monitor and not only the network)

If you would like to propose another tool or another way for testing the network performance, please do so.

However, even I have better or same results in the network test compared to my team mates, my game results and my user experience is drammatically the worst among the team and the video show that my oppents see me much earlier that when I see them. So they start shooting me much earlier than I do.

Thanks

what Monitor do you use? ;)

See my earlier post above.

However, I managed to connect it with HDMI and 144Hz.

your monitor should do 1ms
did you enabled "overdrive" in monitor menu? - but even if not it shouldnt be that big of a difference
