GPU Scaling stopped working properly

Jump to solution

Hello.

GPU scaling mode "Preserve aspect ratio" stops working permanently after driver crash, happens not the first time and not on every crash (driver reinstall, official amd cleanup utility, clean install option from driver does not work). As far as I remember this bug occurs in any relive version of driver (wasn't happening before relive appeared). Last time it happened I reverted back with full system backup, now it happens again and I don't have a fresh one.

Symptoms:

-Scaling modes - Full panel option and Center are working with GPU scaling switch in any position.

-Preserve aspect ratio mode works as Full panel only.

-Changing switch does GPU restart restart as usual (screen goes black).

-After rebooting, scaling mode is set to Full panel regardless of previously selected setting (unlike before).

Most likely this problem is caused by broken registry keys after crash, and is not fixable by official troubleshooting methods.

Radeon Software Version - 18.12.2

Radeon Software Edition - Adrenalin 2019

Graphics Chipset - AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series

Windows Version - Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) (64 bit)

Solved.

Found this old utility from 2010 - ATI GPU Scaling Fix for Windows 7, reuploaded because most links aren't working anymore - LINK UPDATED 15.09.2020 , password 12345 1037797492-ATIGPUScalingFix.7z - Google Drive

By running this utility and then turning GPU scaling to off, then switching different scale methods in Radeon settings AND this utility to match, then turning GPU scaling to ON and doing same switching-matching makes everything work as it should, even better!

Launching a game with resolution other than native made monitor to switch resolution or something, which made a rather long delay (depends on monitor used) before showing a picture, now it's gone, as it was on a clean Windows installation. Seems like this program is able to fix needed registry keys.

Note: to check if "maintain aspect ratio" and "use centered timings" are working correctly now:

-for "use centered timings" you should see black borders everywhere  (top, bottom and sides) if game resolution is lower by both height and width than your monitor native resolution (example - OS resolution 1920x1080 and testing with 1280x960), when broken I had image sticked to the top and had black borders only at bottom and sides.

-for "maintain aspect ratio" - make a screenshot in-game and compare width and height by viewing image fullscreen from Windows with the one in game, they should match. When broken I had image  shrinked by 2cm on both sides but with normal height which not everyone will notice (OS resolution 1920x1080 and testing with 1280x960).

Description:
A fix for the infamous GPU Scaling issue with ATI Catalyst(tm) and Windows 7. See below for
more details.

Requirements:
- An x86/x64 CPU.
- A DVI/HDMI/DisplayPort monitor. CRT will not work.
- Microsoft(R) Windows 7. Both x86 and x64 should be supported. Tested on x64.
- Latest ATI Catalyst(tm) drivers.
- Microsoft(R) Visual C++ 2008 Runtime (x86), can be found here:
  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf
- Microsoft(R) .NET Framework v2.0 (minimum), can be found here:
  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5

Note:
- If you have not checked "Enable GPU Scaling" in Catalyst Control Center, you must do so first.
- This program has only been tested on one machine (AMD Turion Ultra X2 laptop with HD 3200 IGP),
so please don't hesitate to give positive constructive feedback!

Usage:
- Run the program.
- Select the desired GPU Scaling mode.
- Run your favorite 3D application (such as a game, etc).
- Enjoy. Please everyone submit tickets to the Catalyst crew feedback system!
- Please donate if you like this program and/or my other programs!
If you need any more information or help, click the "Help" button in the program. If that
is not helpful enough, feel free to post on the forums!

ATI Catalyst(tm) is a trademark of Advanced Micro Devices.

In addition latest stable driver version -18.12.2 -  brought another new problem - after PC booted and stays idle for a minute, driver changes gpu overclocking settings (?) (probably to consume less than default gpu idle profile), and when you come back - gpu signal not detected, black screen and no response from input devices. After rebooting through reset there is a pop-up:

"Default Radeon WattMan settings have been restored due to unexpected system failure"  while there is only AMD OverDrive available in Radeon Settings tabs and it was never adjusted.

Reverted back to 18.2.1, because after this version another bug appeared (but gone after 1 or more stable versions) - standard 1280x960 resolution was removed from games (impossible to select), but not from windows.

Also AMD cleanup utility doesn't clean registry keys which is very important.
