Gigabyte vega 56 oc 8gb crash randomly all the time, black screen, fans 100%

Hello, im having this weird problem since i brought my new GPU a few months ago, my whole build is new, the GPU was the last  purchase, previously i had a R9 290x in this same build, all works perfectly!

The crash is sometimes a black screen on all monitors and fans turns 100% speed, nothing to do here just force shutdown, sometime i got a blue screen with the message, THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER.

All this happens randomly, between 1 hours to 4 maximum,  while gaming and casually browse on my second monitor.

i have tried all the possibilities, clean windows install, a lot of drivers versions 18.x.x / 19.x.x, diferente pci-e socket, diferente PSU, two diferents power rails, undervolt, power limit +50%, GPU and motherboard BIOS update, basically all known tricks.

My systyem:

  • AMD Graphics Card

EDIT UPDATE:

The only solutions that works is the driver 17.11.1

EDIT UPDATE 2020

I have been testing the new bios, for a week i think, no crashes.

UPDATE THE BIOS USING THIS VGA Bios Collection: Gigabyte RX Vega 56 8 GB | TechPowerUp  (or search for your manufacturer if its not Gigabyte )

Im using the default settings, with the lastest driver version,  turned off zero rpm,  changed the fan speed and power limit -50%

EDIT UPDATE MID 2020

Radeon pro drivers seems to fix all problems

Nice to see i'm not the only one.

Just had to RMA my gigabyte vega 56 oc.

It just wouldn't boot one morning, tried on two other machines with the same result.

For the people who had theirs RMA'd. How was your experience with the RMA? How long did it take and did it come back fixed?

I can't RMA mine where I live, but a friend RMAd theirs (suffering same problem as me. we bought ours roughly the same time) RMA took about one month, give or take a couple days. The new card suffered the same issue, and after RMAing 4 more times they ended up selling the card to an electronics scrapper and moving to an Nvidia GTX 980.

This may sound weird, but a friend of mine had the same problem.

Not sure where the connection is, but the problem was the overclocked CPU (not stock clocks, but changed in the bios).

Blackscreen/fans at max. As soon we put the clocks to the absolute standard the problem went away.

That might be helpful to some, but I want to point out I am running at stock clocks and always have been.

Just a quick update, after 4 weeks I have my card back from the RMA.  New drivers installed and I'm gonna game the heck out of it now to test it.

I will let you know how it goes.

13 hours later and ....?

Much better, had a few stutters on bench mark but that may not be the card , temperature is alot lower than its has been before after 4 hours gaming at max or ultra setting card was sat at 75 Deg and fans where not too noisy.  ( Before it got hot after a few minutes )  It wasn't radiating heat like before and heating up my pc.   seems to be working as you would expect but sadly I'm now tainted into thinking this could happen again

This could have been a case of bad thermal paste. I haven't read back in the comments to see if anyone tried a disassembly and reseat.

You won't find many, my friend, because the disassembling of a GPU is consider a breach in warranty, even if it means saving it from overheating. And since some of us still holds the faint hope that we could RMA if total failure, we haven't put that solution over the table. Though that 75 degrees mark mojoe mentioned is not something I haven't seen while I'm gaming...

That was the problem, the temperature readings where not alot different on the card before but it heated up my pc case by another 20 degrees, it seemed to just radiate the heat into the case.  Now my case temps are normal.   By the looks of it that have changed an internal board on the card.  I haven't checked the firmware version yet.

The division 2 is out this weekend so it's going to get a good work out.

hello's,

got the same issue, I have only had one thread stuck in device driver.

the main game that does this is left 4 dead 2, which is a half life mode in dx9.it just black screened and ramped up the fans and I had to soft reset using the power button.

I have been working with hammer and I get hl2 crashing on trying to load the game.

im using two msi radeon vega 56, so it not a single card issue as it happens to both of them.

the cards are locked to 75c max, and the cards are rated for 85c I think, which leaves a lot of head room for temperature. so I don't think it that.

system is .

AMD ryzen 7 1700

msi x370 gaming carbon pro

avixer 3200 ddr4 (samsung b-die)

msi radeon vega 56 air boost

1000w evga g2

have used two different monitors, hdmi, display port and display port to dvi.

I have no idea whats wrong with it, but as you can see, the system should work fine.

Hi,

Made an account just for this thread. Have the exact same issue with my Gigabyte Vega 56 OC. The crashes are very random. Sometimes I can play for hours at a time without any issues.

Sometimes wil happen twice on a day. Sometimes I have a week without issues, other times it happens multiple times a week. Very weird. Tried loads of things in Wattman, all to no avail. Hope this gets fixed soon!

My specs:

Processor
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 4.5GHz

Video Card
Radeon RX Vega 56 Gigabyte OC

RAM
16 GB DDR4 @2400mhz

Well, this is interesting. I checked mine just to see what you were talking about and it is already revision C3.

Mine is also revision C3. Still have the issue.

Mine was always C3 although still having the crash

tomshardware has reviewed this card, it's stated that gigabyte has soldered VRMs on the back of the card below the backplate which is different than other brands, that could be the reason of this issue, so try cooling the backplate see if that helps

I think its not a thermal problem, my temps are really low, even with undercloking / undervolt and really low temps the card still failing with the lastest drivers.  With the 17.7 drivers and the card with full load / higher temps, no crash at all!

does vr soc and vr mem temperatures appear in gpu-z under sensors, if yes what are the temps under heavy load?

Those temps doesn't show up on gpu-z, dont know if doesnt have the sensors or its missing in the software.

The CPU core clock its higher than the reference (Boost: 1501 MHz / Base: 1170 MHz) sometimes hits over 1560MHz and the temps always still  60° / 70° max in full load with fans at ~ 40%, this card OC really well, im sure its a software issue, at least in my case.

try HWiNFO it shows vrm temps

Here you have, the results are under furmark stress test in 4k, i've never got a crash or blue screen in months with 17.7 drivers

i remember reading some rx vega owners having issues with the newest versions of wattman, may if you install the latest drivers without wattman (this can be done by choosing custom while installing the drivers), could fix the problem

no dice on that, gave it a shot earlier in the week.

Sup guys, so I have tried a couple of things reading your comments while using 19.3.3 drivers and, as far as today morning, I have not managed to get a solution out of this problem. I tried the "no wattman" install, but it didnt help at all. I still got a no signal monitor, 100% fans crash after 3 hours of test benchmark in heaven unreal. The only data that I can think could be useful is that VDDC  and MVDD temps reached 83 and 85° Celcius respectively. All, of course, during 99-100% usage. At this point, I can no longer endorse the driver theory so I got in touch with my vendor and I'm trying to RMA the card. Whether they fix the issue or just changed it to a new one (I honestly dont belive the latter), I will try to get back and keep you guys posted.

did you guys try disabling "turn on fast start-up" in windows 10? i've read it causes performance issues with vega cards, if that doesn't help try windows 7 to confirm it's not an operating system issue

Hi guys I've suffered the exact same frustration as all of you with this vega 56, I'll give my short story version to all this cos the long story is basically everything that's been described on here too. My question here is - has this thread stopped because of the last post by system2000? Has this "disabling turn on fast startup" fixed everyone's problem like it did mine? Just like that boom not a single problem after I disabled it, no lock ups no bsods during gaming nothing no black screens with fans blasting.... Running win 10 64 bit latest drivers and absolutely no problems since.

Sup, Neo:

No, it absolutely not. It was one of the first fixes I tried back when I stil had hope that this were a software issue. Actually, it's even now disable. So, on a similar topic, I actually managed to send my gpu to RMA after 1 week testing period on the store I originally bought the card. They afterwards sent it to gigabyte, though it will take, accordingly to the store tech support, up to one month after I get either a new one or the same one "fixed".

Guess I spoke too soon, low and behold it froze twice today, about 1 minute after gaming both times. Meh :/

Same exact issue, Thread Stuck BSOD with a MSI Vega 56 OC Airboost and system hard freeze during gaming of periods as short as 30 minutes under load, as long as 4 hours under load (Division 2, PUBG).

Wanted to let people know that other brands are experiencing this and I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

My friend has the exact same card and has had 0 issues, but on my rig I have been fighting the system hard freeze and BSOD issue for 1 month (as long as I've had the card).

I'm at my wits end and about to try to sell it and pop in my old card.

I can post as much info as needed but man I need help there is no reason why this is happening.

You're also not alone.

did you try using two different pcie cables not the daisy chain?

Yes. I bought a brand new Corsair RM750x and used 2 separate modular 8pins on seperate sides of the psu just for 100% certainty to rule it out. No change.

As far as my experience, the "two pcie molex option" doesnt solve anything. I made sure that I wasnt daisy chaining and still the problem would occur. Though I did heard some people found a solution in the no daisy chaining the cables thing, so I at least encourage people to try it.

Hi guys,

Wanted to share a 'fix' that works for me. Had zero crashes or black screens in the past three weeks or so.

I keep my card below 60c with an aggressive fancurve and an undervolt (1000mv). I'm guessing that it is indeed the VRM's that are overheating, like some of you suspected. Haven't measured the VRM-temperatures with this fancurve, but my guess is that by aggressively cooling the card to below 60c you'll obviously also keep the VRM-temperatures way lower than if the card ran at 70+ c. Also the card has pretty good cooling and with that undervolt it's VERY easy to keep it below 60, trust me.

It does make the card a bit noisier, fans run between 2000 and 2300 rpm a lot of the time, but it's not that bad in my opinion. Plus this way you don't have to resort to backplate cooling solutions, as some suggested. Might not work for everyone and it's not a 'real' fix, but I've been happily gaming without worries for the past few weeks. Hope it'll be helpful to some of you.

Cheers!

But this way you lose performance, just use the 17.7 drivers meanwhile
