Re: FFXIV Heavensward dx11 crashes with r9 300 series drivers 15.15 and 15.20.0

Jump to solution

I have a Gigabyte r9 390x. I have no issues with FF and direct x 11. Once in a great while the benchmark would lock up, but the last 50 times I have ran it, no issues.

Has anyone tried completely reformatting their computer? Sounds like some old drivers in the registry.

Has anyone with the 380/390/390x tested this game or the benchmark in borderless windowed mode with the 15.7 drivers?

This is very strange now...

390X with 15.7, Witcher 3 and GTA V run flawless in Dx11 either borderless windowed or full screen.

but Toukiden kiwami, also a Dx11 game(only has full screen mode), still crashes occasionally.

This issue is still present in 15.7 drivers.

Tested on 3 systems with 3 different 390x cards (all 3 are MSI 390x cards).

tested on z87 platform with Win7 x64

tested on am3+ platform with Win7 x64

tested on z77 platform with Win8.1 x64

I think I found the root cause of the issue. The issue doesn't seem limited to just FFXIV. Currently all the dx11 games running in borderless windowed mode or non-exclusive fullscreen mode will crash. My theory is that there is a bug with the 15.7 driver and the 300 series. The bug deals with windows hardware acceleration in applications and how that is interacting with dx11.

Windows 7/8/8.1 all are dx11 native. When an application is using hardware acceleration (i.e. Web browser, youtube video playback, microsoft outlook, Xsplit, OBS, Premier, etc.) they are using the gpu to help with rendering. However, when you start up the game, if the game is dx11 based it will crash due to some conflict with the other application.

I hope someone from AMD reads this and feeds this info back to the developers as I believe this is a very serious issue with the current 15.7 (15.15, 15.20) driver revisions which affects the 300 series cards specifically.

I filed multiple bug reports to amd.com/report but never heard back from anyone besides the automated email thanking me for the feedback.

I can vouch for this being the root cause as well.  Testing was done with both 15.15 and 15.20 drivers as well as Win7 x64 and Win10 x64.  I've had no crashes using the DX11 client of FFXIV (borderless windowed) as long as I don't run any application with hardware acceleration.  If I open Firefox, I'm guaranteed to get a black screen and "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" error.  It may not happen right away, but it definitely happens if I give it time.  The weird thing is that the game is still "functioning".  I can hear the music and if I were to hit ESC or any other key that would pull up a menu, I can hear the sound effect for the menu opening.

My system specs for reference:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770

Motherboard: MSI Z77A-G45 Gaming

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB 1333MHz

GPU: MSI R9 390 Gaming 8GB

SSD/HDD: Samsung 850 Pro (256GB) / Western Digital Blue (500GB)

PSU: Corsair HX750 (750W)

MSI R9 390x DX11 games crash - YouTube

Here is a video demonstrating the issue afflicting the 300 series, 15.7 and DX11 games.

I really think this needs to be treated with high priority since this can have severe business impact for AMD considering live-streaming games requires stable drivers that interact with dx11 game clients such as hardware acceleration.

There are topics starting to crop up on reddit regarding this same issue.

They are even starting to link to the threads on this board. One post even mentioned the problem is identical to the example video I made.

lmao, that's me linking your video.

Anyways, I've found a potential workaround: Only use one monitor. Or, what I'm doing now is plugging in my secondary monitor into the motherboard rather than the gpu.
