Fallout 3 & New Vegas Crashes on 24.1.1

I'm unable to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I can't even load a save or start a new game. Instant crash to desktop and removing all the mods, tweaks, INI settings or having the game in its vanilla state doesn't seem to have any effect. Rolling back to previous version solves the problem but I don't plan to stick with older drivers just to play a 13 years old game. Any solution to this problem in the next release would be appreciated. I have a 6750 XT. I'm enjoying to overall experience but these minor things adds up.

i hate that they never care about older games when most of pc gamers love playing older games. Don't ruin older games. Care for the new and old the same. . .

CURRENT FIX

Same problem. After updating to the new driver  Fallout 3 and NV don't work.

I've had this problem all week trying to figure out how to at least get past the scrolling wheel during a new game.

Before I started this, I went for a fresh download, deleting everything. All Fallout NV files, including the ones in

%localappdata% . Went to steam, started the download. After downloading went to verify game files. Everytime I ran it, there's one file that needs to be redownloaded, but doesn't. Go to the Download settings in steam. DELETE THE CACHE. It works still currently, no bugs. Not sure about mods nor Fallout 3 but that's the next test, and at least I can wake up to the Doc finally. I hope this helps guys!!!

24.5.1 still doesn't work - but in the Release Notes under known issues now says
* Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas may fail to launch. [Hotfix pending verification]

gives me hope a hotfix is in the works...

It now says:

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas may fail to launch.[Resolution targeted for 24.6.1]

So next driver most probably.

We get a fix almost 2 months after the show releases. IDK why AMD did not bother to fix this earlier because they knew all the fallout games would see renewed interest. Better late than never.

you need 23.12.1 to play fallout 3. keep reporting this problem and saying 23.12.1 fixe it so they know.

use the feedback option on your videos card. Forum doesn't help much

Just giving this another bump…but it looks like AMD has noticed at least. Still, I spent all day yesterday modding NV with the DXVK mod and No-Stutter but the game is just too unstable.

Feeling sad, because I can’t jingle jangle jingle.

no need for mods. its not the game. Its the amd driver. you need 23.12.1. report problem using feedback on your video card

Oblivion is not working properly too now.

This would make sense. Aren't they all on the same engine, and DX9?

Je  viens d'essayer avec la version 24.5.1 et toujours le même problème...

In the release notes they note that a fix is coming. I just wish it came sooner.

I’ve seen the information, I’m waiting for the fix. I don’t trust them

That is fair. In my experience when, they say they will fix something, they intend to do so.

The fact that they finally recognize the problem is the first step

Anyone have any idea when the next drivers update is getting released? I would like to get back to my game.

No crash with 24.6.1 driver, they fixed the issue. Using an rx 6900 xt gpu and windows 11.

Same with 7900 XT

Using an RX 6700XT on Windows 11 it seems like version 24.6.1 has fixed it on vanilla. However I find that FO3 keeps crashing if using NVAC, I'm not sure if it's an issue on my end or still related with the drivers.

Nvac wasn't working well for me on new Vegas. I was still getting a few crashes. Luckily a viewer in my twitch stream pointed me to an updated version. Did a full playthrough with no crashes after that...

What is NVAC?

My Fo3 continues to crash to desktop on attempting to launch.... while FNV will launch and play, but then crashes to desktop after only a few minutes of gameplay.

I have no mods, both games are freshly re-installed.

Newest update version 24.6.1fixed issues for my 6800xt.

Adrenalin 24.6.1. contains a fix this this issue. Please refer to the Fixed Issues section of the release notes

Fixed Issues and Improvements

  • Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas may fail to launch.

It is not fixed for me...

Both games continue to crash to desktop for me on startup with my new Radeon RX 7800XT.

Furthermore, they refuse to go above 1920x1080 resolution...

Both games also do not recognize my Radeon RX 7800 XT and their prefs.ini files list it as an nVidia Geforce 7900 GS... I attempted to delete the pref.ini files and forcing the games to recreate them, and recreate the graphics settings from scratch, but they just keep defaulting to an nVidia Geforce 7900 GS.

Previously with my Radeon RX 580X, both games would go up to 2560x1440...

Currently, I'm using an Ultrawide that goes up to 3440x1440, and i am able to run Skyrim at this resolution, as well as Fallout 4 before its "HD" upgrade.

If it is showing 7900 that is the EXACT resolution when you download the "fix" which is a D3d9 file and place it in your folder. You must not have removed that file.

That file forces anything to see the 7900.

Remove that file and try again, it will work now.

I don't recall downloading any "fix".   But I did find a resolution to them both seeing a my Radeon as a Geforce.

I actually had to completely uninstall both games (Fo3 / FNV)... remove all mods, etc...  Then install a clean fresh installations, with NO mods.

FNV now launches, and plays, for about 5 minutes... then it promptly crashes to desktop.

Fo3 however, continues to crash to desktop immediately upon attempting to launch.

Both games also still only allow me to set the resolution no higher then 1920x1080... where as, I used to be able to set them up to 2560x1440.

Also, there is no D3d9 File for either of these two games.

It doesn't exist.

Confirmed both games work after this update. We made it folks; Thank You All.

The fix does not work on Asus ROG Ally. Still having the same issues.

I managed to get Fallout New Vegas to run after completely wiping out the entire installation, and all mods... and reinstalling a fresh/mod free copy.

The game now launches and can be played.

BUT.  It still will not run above 1920x1080... and runs at 10 FPS, on a Radeon RX 7800XT....

After doing the same with Fallout 3 GoTY Edition, wiping out the installation and starting over with a fresh clean slate... the game still crashes to desktop on Launch; and still detects my Radeon 7800XT as an nVidia Geforce 7900 GS.

After this update, when you launch Minecraft in full screen mode, a black screen appears, although the game works (there is main menu music and button pressing sounds)

Also report the issue on the AMD Bug Report Tool in your Adrenalin Software!  Select "Other Program" and type in "Minecraft Java v.1.21" because apparently AMD doesn't consider Minecraft a legitimate enough program to include in their dropdown list there.

Everything seems to work great now and my 6650xt is holding up quite well.
I'm playing everything in 1440p including "Starfield"(at med/hi with FSR3 enabled)

If Fallout 3 and New Vegas crash on version 24.1.1, it may indicate compatibility issues with mods or outdated software. Check for updates to mods or game patches. Verify system requirements and ensure all drivers are up-to-date. Adjusting graphical settings or reinstalling the game might resolve the issue.
