Could AMD please add Keyboard and Mouse input Weighting sliders for for Chill in Adrenalin Driver?

Jump to solution

Hello.

I have been testing Chill on various titles, starting with the Witcher 3 (as it is a long supported game).
I was hoping to look into the operation of of Chill on various titles and to look at the power saving I could gain with Chill.
Since I was interested in max power saving, I set the Chill Min Target to 30.
I have a Freesync Monitor with a Freesync Range of 45-75Hz. I turned Freesync off and Vsync to Always Off in the driver and Off in Game, to specifically let the GPU run at whatever FPS it could.
The monitor refresh rate is set to 75Hz. Therefore an FPS of 75 would be ideal when the in game character is moving during action scenes with this monitor.

On my initial installation of the Adrenalin Driver from 17.11.4 to Adrenalin I found that keyboard input on "the Witcher 3" was causing in game FPS to increase from Chill Min Target of 30 to +15-20 FPS when the game character moved around. If I also moved the mouse whilst running or stationary, the character moved as expected but I was not seeing an increase in FPS reported. I also tried other games with Chill and saw the same behavior. Changing mouse sensitivity in windows  did ~ nothing to help increase the FPS in Chill.

I reported this as an issue on AMD Reporting form, stating that Chill was not honoring the Chill Max Target.

I uninstalled Adrenalin ran DDU and reinstalled Adrenalin.

Here is the behavior I now see in games I have tested, I focus on the Witcher 3 for 'accurate' numbers. In this case I was running on i7-4790K with 1 R9 Nano.

Case 1.
======

I set the Chill Min Target to 30 and Chill Max Target to 75.

Using keyboard input to move the character around I see, as before, the FPS on screen increases from 30FPS with character stationary to about 45 FPS when the character is running.
If I move the mouse extremely quickly (not in a way I would normally do in the game), and rotate the character on screen for long enough, FPS increases to the Chill Max Target of 75 in this case.

So in Case 1 Chill is honoring the Chill Max Target of 75, based on a combination of mouse and keyboard input,  but in a totally unbalanced way for me.
I would like the FPS to sit at 30 when my character is stationary, but ramp up ~ immediately to 75 FPS (The Chill Max Target in this case)  when I have either keyboard or Mouse input applied in game.

Case 2.

======
One way to increase the FPS increase with Keyboard input is to increase the Chill Max Target.from 75 to 300.
I set the Chill Min Target to 30 and Chill Max Target to 300.

Using keyboard input to move the character around I see, as before, the FPS on screen increases from 30FPS with character stationary to about 50 FPS when the character is running. If I move the mouse extremely quickly (not in a way I would normally do in the game), and rotate the character on screen for long enough, FPS increases to ~ 180FPS towards the Chill Max Target of 300 in this case.

So I have managed to increase in game FPS to ~ 50FPS, but I want 75 FPS when character is moving / running due to keyboard input.

Also the Peak FPS I see with a combination of mouse and keyboard input is higher than 75 FPS, for a monitor with a refresh rate and Freesync range max of 75.

This means I get Screen Tearing with FreeSync on or off.

So whilst chill is not failing to honor the Chill Max Target, (with a combination of Keyboard and very fast mouse input). I do feel that it is indeed impacting in game performance.
I cannot manage to set Chill up to allow me to make use of maximum power saving (Set Chill Min to 30 FPS) and achieve satisfactory FPS with keyboard only input.

Perhaps again this is just my System/Driver/OS/GPU combination, but I think there is some more work to be done on Chill to make it more usable.

Thanks.

This is a current limitation of Chill, but i have passed your feedback onto driver engineering for future consideration.

Thank you for responding.

If the Driver Engineering Team can improve the keyboard input only FPS and allow better control of the mouse sensitivity I am sure many more people will be much happier to use Radeon Chill.

Implementing  Hialgo Chill in the AMD Crimson ReLive and now Adrenalin Drivers is a great feature to have overall.
However the low FPS (45-55 FPS) with keyboard only input limitation does need fixed to make use of maximum power saving (Chill Min = 30 FPS).
Adding a slider or performance setting to allow user control of keyboard only input FPS would be a great addition to Chill.
Fixing that limitation would also allow in the game FPS to be matched to maximum monitor FreeSync Ranges and avoid screen tearing due to rapid mouse input.

Adding a second slider or performance setting to control mouse input FPS sensitivity would be a nice feature to to add to give a more balanced FPS versus mouse input experience.

I will mark this answer as correct.

Bye.

Chill is still not perfect - while it keeps frames low in the game the intros are full speed even it should limit there too

Hi

Yes - I didn't say it was perfect ... I am just asking for enhancements so more people will use chill, save power, and improve in game experience.
I can see where people should want to take advantage of Chill and may be fine with lower frame rates when their character is stationary but might be very unhappy

if their FPS on a 30-144/240Hz Freesync Monitor will only increase by 15-20 FPS from their Chill Min Target based on keyboard input.

Have you checked what happens if you set Chill Max Target / FTRC to limit Frame Rate when the game starts?

Cheers.

I forgot to mention that I used to run the original Hialgo Chill and there were ways to modify the behavior of Chill by modding some files.
I still have the original downloads and still have Hialgo Chill installed and running on another machine.

I will run a comparison of how modded Hialgo Chill can run (if it still works...) versus the new Chill in the AMD Driver.
Thanks.

hmm, there is wattman's temperature target that might influence the max frame rates too. Nope, did not play with the chill targets - all default is working fine for me .. no Catweazle here.

Hi,

I ran with Freesync off, Vsync off in game and always off in Radeon Settings. I have tried with Single R9 Nano at default Wattman Settings and also with Wattman Overclocked with Max Fan and temp targets set.

The GPU is fine and is not throttling at all.  If I turn off Chill I hit high frame rates turning Chill on is actually killing Framerates based on Keyboard input.

What cards are you running with?

Maybe a couple of videos will show what I see in the Adrenalin driver with Chill on the Witcher 3.
I see similar behavior on other machines using R9 Nano and Adrenalin driver running Windows 10 64 Fall Edition 17.09 patched and checked.

Thanks.

Here is an example Video with 1 R9 Nano, Vsync always off , FreeSync off. Monitor = 75 Hz.
Game = the Witcher 3.

1080p Low settings for Graphics and post processing.

The title says it all.
On The Witcher, with the Chill Min = 30 and Chill Max = 75, Keyboard only input to move the character only ever increases the FPS to 45.
Crazy mouse movement is needed to get near the Chill max target of 75.
Whilst this may not matter to some on the Witcher, it will to others.
I see similar behavior with Crossfire on.

In this case, If I turn 75 Hz Freesync monitor on, and keep the Chill Max Target at 300 to try to increase FPS with keyboard only input, then I see Screen Tearing when moving the mouse.

So, for me at least, turning Chill on is killing framerate with keyboard only input with character moving.
Killing frame rate with character stationary is fine.
I just want the framerate to jump to Chill Max Target (provided the GPU can manage it) based on keyboard input.

I see the same behavior on other titles.

Final Example on the Witcher 3. 1080p Ultra Graphics. Dual R9 Nano. Chill Min = 30. Chill Max = 300. I turn Chill on and off.
Should be clear what is happening by now on the Witcher 3.

I will post a few videos showing similar behavior on a few other titles next.
