Can't install driver on Windows 10 laptop after unsuccessful update

Hi!

I have a Samsung Ativ Book 6 (NP670Z5E-XD1BR). It hit the shelves around 2013 IIRC and is composed of:

  • Intel Core i5-3230M CPU
  • 8 GB RAM
  • (Windows 8 originally) Windows 10
  • AMD Radeon HD 8850M (for some reason, after a driver update years ago my card will be shown as AMD Radeon R9 M200X Series, but that seems to be by design)
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 (which is supported by Windows 10, according to their website)

For some reason, after a driver update years ago my card will be shown as AMD Radeon R9 M200X Series, but that seems to be by design.

I bought a new HDD and did a clean install of Windows 10 on it. Everything went smoothly. I went to AMD website and downloaded the Radeon Crimson 16.9.2 minimal setup and it went smoothly too.

I was prompted once to update my radeon driver, what I happily obliged and did the whole process within the AMD Settings user interface. Now I had Radeon Crimson 16.12.1

Yesterday I was again prompted to update my driver by that Radeon stubborn notification popup. I did, and now I regret.

The installation failed. For some reason the wizard crashed on a later stage.

I downloaded DDU from Guru3D and proceeded with the whole ordeal of cleaning the system, downloading the new driver from AMD website and trying to install it, but it always hangs and completely freezes when it's installing the AMD Graphics Driver to the point I need to force it to shutdown with the power button.  When it happens, by notebook will 3 times out of 5 hang on the boot screen and will only boot up correctly if I go into Safe Mode and do the DDU routine of swiping all amd drivers.

I have already tried to install again the 16.9.2 but it freezes on the same stage. I've retired the process after permanently disabling Windows Defender (my only AV) and disabling driver signature verification but to no avail. The same goes to preventing windows to automatically download manufacturer's apps and drivers etc.

According to the installation wizard, it will install AMD Settings and all that stuff altight - the system hangs only later down the road, when installing the AMD Graphics.

After every unsuccessful try, if I go to device manager I'll see that the AMD Radeon... line won't appear under Display adapters and that there will be and exclamation point in Other devices > Video Controller, as you can see here. If I ask it to automatically update the device, I'll be met with this configuration - the AMD line will pop up again under Display adapters and a fresh new driver will be installed, version 21.19.384.0.

I can install Leshcat's Catalyst 16.2.1 Unifl following their instructions and it will work properly.

I've already come across that To people who have instant Black Screen... post and, from what I could get from it, I should start a new thread if my laptop runs ok with a different driver, which seems to be the case both with Leshcat's of with that v21.19.384.0 my system rolls back on device manager.

There are no restore points to that sweet spot when things went sour.

I'm running out of ideas here.

#1...stop installing the 'minimal' setup.

If your laptop is performing ok....leave it alone. You gain nothing by trying to install the newer drivers.

Laptop graphics update...How to

Re: Can't install driver on Windows 10 laptop after unsuccessful update

You are dead wrong.

Stock drivers that were provided by samsung update utility before downloading drivers from windows update were forced, did not work at full speed. Games were very slow.

Downloading drivers from amd website made games run much faster but only if you manage to install the driver by disabling signature enforcing.

Performing clean install, allowing windows 10 to download all drivers automatically without any ability to stop the update except to disconnect, causes computer to freeze when it installs and driver from windows update.

To make matters worse, last year windows 10 worked with driver from and website in signature disabled mode but now it does not.

Now of I try to install same driver I was able to install before with earlier version of windows 10, it will not only freeze but also corrupt boot of my drive every single time.

As of right now, I can't download driver from windows update.

I can't install driver using old samsung update utility because it installs driver that's not performing well.

I can't install new version of samsung utility because it tells me to use windows update which freezes my laptop

I can't use and website because it says j need to use windows update which freezes my laptop.

I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER SAMSUNG LAPTOP OR PHONE.The only thing I can potentially buy from Samsung is fm radio and tv, not smart tv.

I can't use my laptop right now.

As soon as I get online, windows update will download then driver and kill my laptop over and over and over again.

Disabling driver signature enforcing does not help.

To be honest ? I think AMD not Microsoft give a **bleep**.

I paid 1300 for this laptop. Not going to buy anything from Samsung again.

Lesson learned.

I can't even downgrade because samsung does not have drivers for windows 7.

WTF samsung ?

WtF Amd ?

Re: Can't install driver on Windows 10 laptop after unsuccessful update

having same issues mate. win 10 got updated automatically and crashed my system. booting showed me black screen. so uninstalled amd and when i tried to install it freezes while installing display driver. even the old driver which worked didnt work. i even made a clean install and it still freezes the system. the worst part the OEM driver also freezes. i looked into hwinfo it shows my card. so i know card is not dead. but win 10 update definitely screwed us.

anyone found any working fix?

You have to install older version of Windows 10 which is impossible unless you have it saved somewhere.

Re: Can't install driver on Windows 10 laptop after unsuccessful update

No i dont.

How ever, i was able to finally install the driver without a crash.

I cant say exact steps i took but i do know that at one point or another i had signature enforcing disabled in boot menu.

I also think i did at first end up installing factory drivers and then followed with installing drivers from AMD crimson version.

I will give you version of of drivers later today when i get to my laptop.

Hang on.

Re: Can't install driver on Windows 10 laptop after unsuccessful update

Thanks for the reply mate. I have some questions hopefully you will answer 1.what is your windows 10 version along with OS build. You can find by running "winver" command. 2. Your present Graphics driver version. 3. Did your old catalyst driver install in normal mode well?.

Re: Can't install driver on Windows 10 laptop after unsuccessful update

OS built 19042.631
Its last year image still.

I am having problem with intel driver. Brightness not working.

Driver Version: 15.33.37.64.4242

Radeon driver seems to work

win10-64bit-radeon-software-adrenalin-2019-edition-19.2.2-feb12.exe

This driver also worked with earlier windows build but with the current one it refused to install.

I guess part of the reason why it went through is because intel driver is not working properly.

Re: Can't install driver on Windows 10 laptop after unsuccessful update

I managed to get rightness to work by installing

Brightness Control Patch_10.18.10.4242
Had to restart.

But its not working 100% as expected.  When laptop is on battery, it suppose to dim, but it does not.
It stays at what ever level you set it and Fn+F2 or F3 do nothing as usual because i dont install Samsung Settings.
Have enough preloaded garbage as it is.
