Got an older system.
i7 2600K on a P67 motherboard. Radeon R9 290 graphics card.
( Sapphire Tri-X )
This system has been perfectly stable for many years now.
No issues at the desktop and can game for hours and hours.
Currently running Win10 x64 1909.
Decided to try the new Radeon Software 2020 .
First odd thing was the sudden short black screens at Win10 desktop.
Then came the strange colors in Firefox. No issues playing videos
on YouTube etc, but the address and search boxes changed colors for a
couple of seconds. Usually yellow from the normal grey.
Those issues are annoying, but you can still live with them.
Haven’t played any games since I started using Radeon Software 2020 in Dec -19.
Now on 20.2.1 I decided to play one, the other day.
5 min in I got the infamous black screen and sound still running in the background.
No response from the computer, so had to use the button to restart.
While I can live with the other issues, black screen crashes while gaming
is a deal-breaker.
Went back to the latest Radeon Software 2019, and now all issues are gone.
The system is back to its usual stable self.
So the black screen issues seems to affect more graphics cards than
those mentioned in the release notes.
More users with older hardware and the same issues ?!
Update with the Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.4.2 driver
Have stayed away from Adrenalin 2020 drivers since the 20.2.1 issues above.
Been gaming a lot with the 2019.12.1 driver without any issues.
Now with the release of 20.4.2 I gave it a new try.
So far it looks promising. Only some 30min of gaming yet, but that would result in
a black screen with the 20.2.1 driver. Not so with the 20.4.2.
Hopefully both the gaming and desktop issues are finally gone now.
To be continued.
Another day and still no issues with the 20.4.2 driver.
So far a big improvement over the 20.2.1 driver.
Had exact same issue but without colours changing, display goes black sound plays for a second after and stops assuming it crashed windows but pc stayed on and always only happened in games after like 5 minutes lol still havent found a fix even rolling back on old drivers. might try the driver you used tho see if it helps me.
I have found a fix that always works for me, and it did solve the latest black screen crashes on my system.
What was the fix and why did it work? I don't know why it works, but it did work. The fix was to reinstall the AMD graphics driver several times with a factory reset and clean install with a deletion of precepts. You do this directly in the beginning of the graphics card driver installation on the advanced tab.
The first time I did this reinstallation and rebooted the computer the black screen crashes did not go away, and it even crashed my computer on the AMD Radeon software program!
But I installed the driver one more time after this with a clean install / factory reset, and restarted the computer, and yes, the black screen crashes completely went away after this second installation attempt after I rebooted the computer.
I don't know why this fix works, and why reinstalling the driver more then one time after each other in the same way would fix the issue, but it does and this fix has always worked for me and perhaps this can help AMD troubleshoot the matter and find a better solution.
Note: I have sometimes had to reinstall the AMD graphics card drivers up to three times and restart the computer before the black screen / freeze crashes went away, but this fix has always, and I mean always, worked for me.
I hope this fix helps someone else suffering from this.
It does not hurt trying.
