Aorus 5700 xt crash + black screen

Recently I bought the AORUS Radeon RX 5700 XT 8G Since then I cant play without unexpected crashes in game. It happens with random effect, sometimes it just crashes the game for a minute and sometimes it crashes the whole OS or the monitor just loses signal.

I even had a situation when the pc just went "brick" and only pushing power button for 10 seconds helped.
Event viewer says its radeon software crashing but there is not always a saved log of this.
In addition to the black screens and crashes i have artifacts, blinking picture, and fps drops
its been 2 months that im struggling with this problem and nothing helps.

What I did:

Clean install of Windows 10 (1909) + newest drivers (20.4.1) like 4-5 times already

Tried older drivers (All of them since 19.12.1)

DDU + Install again newer driver (20.4.1)

Updated MB bios (Gigabyte F2 to F7c)

Switched to alternative bios

Switched vBios silent\OC

Replaced PSU 8+8 Pins connector

Removed Gigabyte APP Center (Motherboard applications: fan control, bios update, leds etc.)

Disabled hardware acceleration of the browser

Disabled AMD software settings (anti lag, freesync)

Deleted all games from amd software

Switched DisplayPort mode 1.1/1.2

Tried HDMI Cable

Switched to another pci-e x16 slot

Enabled/Disabled XMP

Reduced clocks manually 1905Mhz, 1100mV and automatic undervolt profile via Amd Software.

Tried gpu utilities Aorus /Msi Afterburner

Watched dozens of "solutions" on YouTube, checked all the forums that i could (English, Russian)

My specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.30 Ghz

MB: GA-X99-Ultra Gaming (rev. 1.0)

RAM: 4x4GB 2133 Mhz (XMP 2400 Mhz)

GPU: AORUS Radeon RX 5700 XT 8G

PSU: Chieftec cft-750-14cs 750W

HD: Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 3D2, QLC

Monitor: Asus VP28UQG

I would point a finger at my PSU but there is one game - kingdom come: deliverance that runs on 2k and ultra settings without a problem for 6-5 hours on 60+ fps so i dont understand, why other more optimized and less buggy games work for few minutes and then we go again with the crashes, flickering pictures, artifact, signal lose?

Im an IT specialist and I have enough troubleshooting 9 hours a day, then I come home and i have THIS to deal with. Its already 2 months everyday. It seems Im not so good at my profession, I give up amd. you won.

But still, can someone provide a few tips?

amd tech support is not answering anymore. their best advice was reinstall the driver.

wow you have tried many solutions. I think you have to wait until the next version of AMD software. I think this week or next week AMD will launch new version of the software.

that's some good news. hope it will fix something

mstfbsrn980 try to say that everyone who has black screen/freeze problem caused by bad PSU which is may not a problem. His cpu has 750w gold which is pretty good. I have 650w gold which is also good. I think it's not PSU problem.

Thank you for taking time to answer its very detailed, although I still can't understand how games with lower requirements are not working properly while other newer games with ultra settings work for hours.

The Aorus card itself require a recommended 600W PSU according to manufacturer so even if my 750W is not entirely accurate it still meet the requirements, and if not its misleading customers.

Also I did a little test, maybe it will be interesting:

In warhammer 2 (a very demanding strategy game) I did a custom battle in which I created a huge armies of zombies against my small force. well the game fell to 5-10 fps (expected) but it worked for 20 minutes without problems or power instabilities. as you can understand it was a very harsh benchmark Im not sure but I think it means that the psu handling the situation?

for example there is other strategy game which requirements are not so high (Frostpunk) that it takes 2 minutes of gameplay to crash and lose monitor signal.

damn even starcraft 2, a 2012 game which can run with this GPU on 200fps also crashes.

anyway I think that after all the "solutions" I've tried the next stop for this GPU will be warranty check. just because i don't have another PSU to test on and i can't afford it right now without knowing for sure that its the problem. only if they won't find anything I'll have to replace PSU.

If you in doubt about your power supply, try the OCCT PSU stress test. It combines a stress test for cpu and gpu, which gives the maximum load on the power supply.

I have EVGA Supernova G2 850W 80 Plus Gold Modular. I have the same black screen freezes. Is it also my PSU? Really?

What is your GPU brand model? Is your CPU stable?

The subject owner is using Xeon class processor. This processor does not crash. Either PSU or GPU is problematic. There is no other possibility!

Can  you share a picture of the internals of your PC case?

I notice that your PSU does not have a single 12V rail, but it splits the 12v rail over 4 rails. This could cause problems if you do not use one rail per GPU power connection.

Have you tried the graphics card in a different system with a different power supply, ideally one with a single 12V rail?

Hi, amdmatt

Unfortunately I don't have another PSU to check with.

But here is my observation regarding the rail splits (I marked them by numbers in the picture)

When i connect the GPU via 1+2 or 3+4 it behaves like I described in the original post (Black screens, signal loses, artifacts etc.)

When i connect the GPU via 1+3 or 2+4 it shuts down my pc after 2 minutes of gameplay. looks like its some kind of defense.

I dont know what it means and if this information helps somehow, hope it does.

Anyway right now there is no point providing a picture of my pc internals because the gpu on warranty check at my local vendor's lab and i have an old 950gtx for now. But I suspect it will come back to me in a few days without issues detected.

Thank you for your response!

Please let us know if the vendor manages to find out if the GPU is faulty.

Ok that was fast, the vendor contacted me a few minutes ago. as I thought they did not find any problems running all kinds of stress tests non-stop for 24 hours on a 700w PSU. They say that the problem is local and my pc or games i run is the problem.

The fact that the GPU is ok is a good sign but now im really out of ideas what could possibly go wrong or whats the problem with my PC specs. Is there a problem with my CPU maybe? Its a X99 chipset and a LGA2011-3 socket or a NVMe m.2 pci drive?

Also i contacted Gigabyte tech support but they didn't see a problem in my specs.

Maybe it is a PSU issue?

I changed 3 PSU since the purchase of rx 5700, and my problem has not been solved, I can also run stress tests for hours and the PC is stable, but I get unpredictable crashes during games, and "Radeon RX Vega series graphics products may experience a system crash or TDR when performing multiple task switches using Alt+Tab" from the 20.4.1 release notes is actual for my rx 5700 as well.

Maybe.. I have so much Maybe in my head for the last 2 months that i cant sleep properly.

Im sorry but I provided as much information that I could. I can't know for sure what is the problem. The PSU recommended for this GPU is 600w and I have 750w. I dont know why is this GPU working unstable this is why I writing emails to AMD tech support that are not answering anymore (even though the service ticket still open), and this is why im writing tons of text across the internet to figure out whats wrong. As i Said, 2 months im working on this issue.

So maybe its bad driver? or maybe its unstable hardware? or both? why everyone trying to blame the users I cant understand that?

Im sorry but i decided to sell this this excuse of a GPU on facebook for much cheaper price to get rid of it and return atleast some of my hard earned money. Now I see why nvidia is high priced hardware. This is my first experience with AMD and i think the last.

Thank you and all your team that are always here for us, the simple users, answering our complains helping everyone with their problems, fixing drivers issues, make fun with my money.

Can you try the next driver and see if that resolves your issue? I will update the thread with a link to it as soon as it becomes available.

My system was stable for about 5 days after the release of 20.2.2, but after that the crashes resumed, and it seems to me that windows updates broke everything again, black screen became accompanied by TRRRRRRRRRRR sound with which my rx 480 crashed a couple of years ago when the hardware acceleration in Сhrome was broken, but only now it happens in games and during switching between tasks

Hi amdmatt‌,

The crashes also happen on vega64, however.... and now the interesting part, if you install the INF driver only trough controll panel without "AMD Radeon Software" the issues wen't away for some reddit users here:

Please fix your drivers. Black screening since last may. : Amd

I asked more people to test my findings and they also confirmed no more crashes.

I hope this helps!

Just installing the drivers likely means nothing else gets changed i.e. no overclocking/undervolting the GPU.
However I definitely think Adrenalin 2020 GUI/UI is causing PC freezes/crashes.

On XFX RX Vega 64 Liquid.

Tested Adrenalin 2020 20.4.2 running BFV at 4K ultra in Balanced, Turbo and Turbo with Power Limit increased from 25 to 50%. I did not get any crashing running the game with those profiles with Radeon Chill off. That is a first. Something has improved in the drivers for sure. Thank you AMD.

However attempting to record with Relive at 1080p was problematic. Recording halted frequently and was bad quality. GUI Overlay stop record button would not work. Using Adrenalin 2020 GUI caused PC Freeze requiring a soft reset on a couple of occasions and a black screen followed by driver crash on another. I did not turn on enhanced sync as it has never worked in the past and always cused a game and/or PC freeze/crash.

I have been trying "Hybrid Driver" Adrenalin 2019 19.12.1 GUI/UI with Adrenalin 20.4.2 drivers.
Same story w.r.t. ability to run BFV no problems using AMD Driver settings for Balanced Turbo, Turbo with +50% power slider. GUI/UI behaving much better.

I started looking at undervolting and overclocking the GPU with that Hybrid Driver and it is ~ as stable as the best previous combination which was Adrenalin 2019 19.12.1 with 20.3.1 drivers. I have been able to run the RX Vega 64 Liquid with a 25mV Undervolt, a 0.5% overclock on GPU SCLK, HBM2 running at 1120MHz, 942mV. Radeon Chill on with Chill_Max 30, Chill_Max 300, Profile FRTC off, Global FRTC on and set to 59. I have been able to record the game session at 1080p for 30 minutes with no problems. No BSODs. Since that is overclocking the GPU and using Chill that is outside the concern of the AMD Drivers team but it tells me that "Hybrid Driver" combination is working well.

In summary the Adrenalin 2020 20.4.2 drivers + latest BFV on updated Windows 10 19.09 are a definite improvement.
The Adrenalin 2020 GUI/UI is still causing me problems.
Adrenalin 2019 19.12.1 + 20.4.2 drivers seems the best combination to me.
I think that Hybrid driver install option should be the main install option and Adrenalin 2020 GUI/UI should be optional install.

I will continue to test.

Perhaps give OBS Studio a try in meantime, it's able to use the GPU just like Adrenalin and you can create all sort of cool hotkeys, replay buffers. And more   Lots of people think it's for streaming only but it's one of the most powerful recording software out there!

Yes I tried it already.
It works but it kills FPS if I use the Ryzen 2700X processor to process the recordings, even at lowest quality.
I also tried to use a secondary GPU on the system - a PowerColor RX Vega 56 with OBS.
That produces very high quality captures, but drops many intervening frames.
So I get a "slide show" of a few high quality screenshots rather than a video.

I am looking at Elgato Game Capture 4k60 S+ Capture Card because I do not want to build a PC dedicated to capture.

This is a issue for many people specially with higher refresh rates or multi display configurations. This is due the recording software need to lower the frames to 60, and so you get frame skipping etc etc.  The only thing to eliminate this issue to match the refresh rate, however this is nearly impossible as you would have a sluggish game experience.
A game capture card will solve this for good

The best option you have without capture card is to run at 120hz so you have the 2:1 dropdown. No stuttering, frameskips etc etc.

I have the frame rate in BFV set to 60FPS. I also have FRTC set to 59. I am running on 4K 60FPS monitor. In game VSync is off. FreeSync is on.
It might be that there is some AMD encoder option I could set in OBS on the secondary PowerColor RX Vega 56 Red Dragon that I use as the "capture device" to improve capture performance t the cost of encoder quality for the Primary RX Vega 64 Liquid
I will go back and take a look to see if there is something I can do.
Thanks for your advice.

Please try updating to 20.4.2 driver and let me know if that resolves your issue.

I updated the driver and its the same problems. so i thought maybe a clean install of windows will help, today i finished installing all my stuff again but the driver behaves the same. If im lucky it just restarts every 5 minutes but i can play and if im not lucky im getting "no signal".

If I read trough all your post so far the PSU could be the problem, the PCIE Rails seem weak to me, don't forget the Core i7-5820K is quite power hungry aswell, IDLE arround 68W. And under load up to 185W.

That PSU has four +12V Rails, each with 18A I think the card would need atleast 20A on each rail to work. Even Vega is known to crash on this PSU.

For reference:

Weird PC behaviour since I upgraded to Vega64. | guru3D Forums

I like to run Open hardware monitor when playing/using a app that is gives some good details:

Yhea it gives some good info, however AMD and me included pointed out that this 11 year old PSU would not be suitable for the 5700XT, hes ignoring the technical aspects and so i'm done with this topic.

The 5700XT has issues for sure, we cannot forget that but his parts should meet the requirements first, any recent 750W PSU should have worked but a PSU from 11 years ago is a different story. Hes also ignoring that a other user with a Vega64 same PSU model was having power related issues. The Vega 64 and 5700XT draw almost the same amount of power. Do not cheap out on parts, in worst case the old PSU will fail and break certain components.

Good luck trough and stay healthy!

Please buy a new high quality PSU.
Nvidia GPUs also need good quality PSU to work properly.
Even if you cannot get the RX5700XT to work reliably with new PSU and latest AMD 2020 20.4.2 Drivers you still need the PSU for a replacement Nvidia GPU.

You can keep the old PSU as a backup or see if you can sell it.

Thank you.

GTX 1080 Ti needs 40AMPs on single rail of PSU to function. So 4 rail PSUs are not that good for them.

So Im going to buy a PSU Antec HCG 1000EX

Hope it will help. I will update when the PSU installed. Of course with clean installation of windows. everything from scratch.

As yummyhamster mentioned earlier, I have 18A on a 12V rail, the PSU im gonna buy has 25A. Maybe this is the real problem. (Even though I didnt find any info about recommended amperage on single rail)

As I said, in the next 1-2 days I'll update. Stay tuned

well first of all sorry for my broken english. I'll try my best ...

I got a brand new PC consisting of AMD ryzen5 3600, MSI Gaming Edge MB,  16GB Gskill RAM and of course a XFX 5700XT Ultra Thicc III.

I do not have any games installed so far except Euro Truck Simulator 2 - no problems there.

I'm downloading Metro Exodus right now and I'll watch what happens.

I get problems when i'm using 3DMark Timespy. I've the same issues with Black Screen which is reproduceable. Updating to the new driver 20.4.2 (using DDU to remove the old one) didn't help.

BUT ...

My Black Screen error only occurs if my pc is connected to a monitor. If I connect my PC to my Benq W1110 Beamer - no problems with 3DMark anymore. Strange I think ...or kind of an big unknowing myself...

Maybe some of you have the possibility to validate that? (Monitor vs. Beamer)

Have a nice day...

Freesync monitor?

Good luck, let us know if it changes anything.

If you then still experience crashes try to install the driver by INF method, Basically let the installer extract to c:\amd and keep the installer open, and install the gpu trough device manager, and point it out to "C:\AMD\Win10-Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-2020-Edition-20.4.2-Apr23\Packages\Drivers\Display"

This will install the driver but without AMD Software, i'm curious if this helps for you.

You can also try the INF method today, but make sure to use DDU or AMD CleanUp utility first.

Stay safe.

Already tried that method on a clean windows install.

Unpacked 20.4.2 with 7zip > installed the driver via device manger manually > installed AORUS Engine (Gigabyte gpu software) to monitor the fans.

I have noticed that if i dont have software, the gpu heats i can bake eggs on it. For example if Im in bios the GPU heats but the fans wont turn on. maybe that indicates malfuction of this specific card? also the fans wont work in windows till i install the software. Is that normal?

No. That should not happen.
