I have the legacy AMD Radeon HD 5770 GPU.

I recently bought a 32 inch monitor. The max resolution I can go via software is 1920x1200, but the monitor can support well over 2560.

I understand there's a downsampling GUI which once installed can bump up the resolution. Has anyone tried this without it killing your video card?

The 5770 is capable of eyefinity so it should support a higher max res. My suspicion is that you are using a single link DVI cable, or, if using HDMI, a poorly made one.
