Adrenalin removed vp9 hybrid acceleration? (Polaris)

I've lost hardware accelerated vp9 codec capability with recent driver update. Before Adrenalin it used to work just fine, 4k 60fps with mostly no dropped frames.

Chrome flags I've used for it:

--ignore-gpu-blacklist --enable-accelerated-vpx-decode=2

No longer work for me after driver update.

Short search revealed that it was removed as a capability but I'd like to both have it back and know why it was removed, since it worked fine on my setup with a custom chromium startup flag.

Anyone? Maybe I am the only one with this issue? Or maybe there are others?

i have the same problem, interestingly i;m actually using 17.10.2 which is the first driver it was removed on, i'm using this as I have an RX 550 and its just not stable on any later drivers for me, I get random system hangs, no BSOD, no mini/mem dump, nothing, just hangs and I have to boot it. No such problem on 17.10.2 but same issue in 17.10.1

I'm curious, when do you use vp9 codec?

just talking about youtube VP9 decoding, have I misunderstood the thread?

This is correct, mostly youtube videos at 4k.

I also convert some gameplay videos and instant replays to VP9 .webm files when I want to share them.

whats also odd is that there is no an option in RADEONMOD tweaker to enable this, this is exactly the kind of thing you'd expect in that tool, might look into that.

plenty of people saying that the hybrid VP9 decoding is pants anyway, are you sure It made a big difference?, I just assumed it did, have never dont an A-B test.

With the hybrid decode I could play 4k 60fps youtube video with maybe 5 dropped frames(usually the ones at the start) and maybe 15-20% of CPU time @ 1GHz (haswell i5).

Without it, CPU time goes to anywhere between 30% and 80%, boosts to nearly 4GHz, and video playback stutters heavily, with dropped frames going to hundreds very quickly.

I can notice even the 720p ones don't play smoothly without it, but it's not as bad as anything above it.

A bump of hope, that it gets noticed by staff. I'll open a support ticket if it doesn't.

I would love to log a support ticket to AMD.

This is some kind of a joke, I bought 350GBP Graphic Card which can not play 60 FPS at 8k on youtube where I can take a card from nvidia for 200 euro LESS which plays it perfectly?

I feel scammed.

In May 2019 I got these results with 4K YouTube videos playing on RX 480 and i5-6600K:

4K@30fps:

CPU utilization VP9 YouTube video, RX480, May-2019.png

4K@60fps:

pastedImage_4.png

The GPU usage was exactly the same with 30fps and 60fps:

GPU utilization VP9 YouTube video, RX480, May-2019.png

The first part of the charts represents playing the video in full-screen in Chrome. The second part is the PC at rest.

What annoys me is the CPU usage, and the lack of GPU usage. A laptop would run hot and loud. And on PC basically I loose half of my computational power by watching even a 30 fps video, so I'd be slowing down any other task my computer is performing.

More details:

At 30 fps there were only a couple of dropped frames and the playback was fine.

At 60 fps there were "68 dropped of 3673" frames, while the playback was still looking fine.
