25.5.1 instability on rx6000 series

Hello everyone,

I am writing this post beacuse I have not managed to find any topic open related to this issue. I have RX6900XT, but I've seen other posts of reddit of people with RX6000 series GPU reporting the same issue.

The issue is that there are random but very frequent driver timeouts if you start alt-tabbing between game and other open windows. My new drivers firstly were installed by new autoinstall features introduced in 23.3.1. I had suspicion the the drivers were not installed properly, so I used DDU multiple times to have a fresh install of the latest driver to no luck. I reverted back my OC (which was rock solid on previous versions of the driver) to check for stability and found no difference whatsoever. Only by rolling back to old driver (23.3.1 for clarity) I was able to overcome this issue.

For any rx6000 series GPU owners I strongly suggest to keep away from the latest version of drivers until this issue is firstly acknowledged by AMD and secondy some meaningful hotfix is introduced.

Hope it helps someone who has encoutered this issue.

I have a RX6800XT.
Coming from 25.3.1, I just installed 25.5.1 tonight and was immediately hit with constant freezes and driver timeouts. Specifically trying to un-fullscreen a Youtube video would cause a time out.

Can confirm this as well. Having any type of media running on hardware accelerated software in the background while gaming causes crashing. Also alt+tabbing causes heavy flicker even on borderless windowed games and eventually crashes them. Observed more frequently on UE5 games.

can confirm since that update 2-3 days ago my main hard drive nvmce ssd is often at 100% and while tabbing and switching monitors the games and radeon crashes. What helped a little sometimes was switching from windowed fullscrren to fullscreen for most games. Just now i rerolled back to last working driver version. hopsfully the next update makes it right again.

The same thing started after updating the drivers, but on the 5700xt

Am currently on 24.12.1 on my 7900XT and limit clock frequency to 2500MHz (boost clock is supposed to be 2400MHz but it will attempt 2700MHz+ without limit)

Anything newer than 24.12.1 is unstable even with frequency limit.

In driver version 25.5.1, if any game is running and I minimize the window or switch to another window like a browser or even the desktop, Windows starts to lag heavily — it feels like the FPS of the entire interface drops to 30 or even lower. Everything lags — the browser, File Explorer, and the game itself. I have to roll back to the previous driver version. My graphics card is an RX 7800 XT.

I am using 6600XT and now playing FF7 Rebirth...
well, all still OK for me, but the Freesync make the sky like flickering-weird(like dimming on-off) is back.

There is a thread about this issue.

For me the best now is 25.4.2.

I've been struggling with the same issue, I have been using an RX 6600xt for the past couple of YEARS and only now after this driver update, have issues been this severe. The problem is however, that I cannot use an older version of the driver because programs like daVinci resolve do not support the older drivers on the newest versions. Hopefully they fix this issue soon as this is the first major problem I have had with AMD products.

Had the same problem with DaVinci after rolling back from 25.5.1 to 25.3.1
I did manage to fix it by using DDU and just installing 25.3.1 directly

Yeah, the last 3 driver versions have had endless time outs. I notice it the most with voltage which I previously had at 900 and was getting the best numbers from. Now if I even try to set that it crashes, I can get it to around 960 with it auto crashing but then its time outs.

I have it set at 1000 now but still get random time outs, most notably when I put the pc in sleep mode/lock it for a few mins.

Just going to revert back a 25.2 or 3 as I had ZERO issues with the drivers then regardless of my settings.

Can confirm this as well. I had all the symptoms described above. In addition, yesterday it even died while booting.

Reinstalled 25.5.1 "from scratch". Didn't help. Replaced 25.5.1 with 25.2.1 and had no issues so far. With the 25.5.1 I'd have a few reboots already.

Same situation here but in PC VR.

When I use my Quest2 in PC VR USB-C, everything is fine at first, but the longer I stay in VR, the more graphical glitches I experience.
These appear in the form of horizontal lines and are more or less annoying at first, but the more time passes, the more prominent they become and the more they interfere with vision.
Before I upgraded to graphics driver version 25.5.1, I had no problems.

Thx for helping!
