Introduction

October is out and November is in, and that means another month of happenings in the world of gaming and the AMD Red Team. Between The Outer Worlds taking us to new horizons, the release of the first gaming laptop to use AMD’s 7nm technology, and the holiday spirit kicking down our collective doors, we couldn’t be more amped for what’s to come!

See You Space Cowboy

Image result for the outer worlds key art

The Outer Worlds hit stores on October 25th, and the reception thus far has been nothing short of amazing. Obsidian’s latest hearkens back to many of our favorite RPGs of old – with memorable characters and dialog, beautiful locales to explore, and plenty of decisions that change the course of your adventure.

AMD partnered with Obsidian to deliver gameplay designed to take full advantage of the power of AMD Ryzen processors, and it’s turned out to be an experience that’s truly spectacular. If you haven’t had a chance to try The Outer Worlds yet, you might like to know that you can get a copy FREE with the purchase of select Ryzen CPUs. The game is also available on Xbox Game Pass for PC to try as well!

MSI Alpha 15

Image result for msi alpha 15

October also marked the release of MSI’s Alpha 15 laptop. The first gaming laptop to utilize 7nm technology is powered by Radeon RX 5500M and Ryzen 7 3750H, sporting up to a 144hz FreeSync display for ultra-fast, buttery smooth gameplay.

We couldn’t be more excited for this bad boy to be introduced to the world, and we hope you all are too. If you’re looking for no-compromise gaming on the go, the MSI Alpha may just be the laptop for you. Not to mention the fact you get Borderlands 3 or Ghost Recon Breakpoint free when you pick one up (just sayin’).

Dare to Dream

Image result for dreamhack atlanta

If you’re headed to Dreamhack Atlanta this weekend, make sure to stop by the CLX area! They’ll have a wealth of all-AMD systems set up so you can take a break from all the gaming with, well, even more gaming! You might even see some members of the Red Team community on the floor, so be on the lookout.

HyperX will also be on the scene with their esports bus, hosting tournaments and giveaways all weekend. If you’re blood is running hot for some competition, make sure to head their way to see what they’ve got going on.

We’re Getting a Makeover

As I said in last month’s post, we’re continuing the updates to our online presence very soon! We’ve been rolling out updates to our Discord server and Twitch channel, and now it’s our community page’s turn.

So, without further ado, we're happy to introduce you to the new and improved version of the Gaming Community Page! This is just the start, and you can expect more details soon on what we’re planning for our next phase starting in 2020.

What’s Next?

As you can tell, we’ve got a lot going on in the community this fall, and there’s always more to come. Like I alluded to above, the holidays are upon us, and we’re ready to celebrate with all of you! Be on the lookout for some signs of the holiday spirit as we make our way into December. We know you’re on the edge of your seats waiting to find out about our next VLAN, and you can rest assured it’s going to be a big one to close out the year.

Stay tuned here for more updates. Until then, see you next time!

Introduction - Wake Me Up When September Ends

Hello, Red Team! We’re back again with another another Red Team Rewind, this time revisiting our latest VLAN and going over all the game releases we had to round out the summer! Plus, we’re looking ahead to the rest of the year and beyond.

100 games of summer

Another season, another Red Team VLAN! Thank you to our kickass community members for stopping by to help us say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. We had an amazing day of gaming – exploring the Xbox Game Pass for PC, giving away some Ryzen and Radeon hardware, and hanging out with all of our fellow Red Teamers.

game pass pic.jpg

Be on the lookout for info on our next event in the coming months. They’re never too far off, and we’re always looking forward to the next time we can welcome all of you for a day of fun, games, and (of course) prizes.

Ghosts, gears, and psychos – oh my!

This fall is rife with game releases, and we’re having an amazing time helping introduce them all to gamers around the world. Between Gears 5 and Borderlands 3 adding new stories to their fantastical worlds and Ghost Recon Breakpoint bringing us back down to Earth with gritty spec ops action, there are plenty of experiences to be excited about when it comes to the games the Red Team is playing.

Ubisoft’s latest foray into the world of tier one operator action is now available on all platforms, so grab your fellow Ghosts and head to Auroa for intense 4-player co-op and 4v4 PvP in Ghost War. If you haven’t heard yet, you can Raise the Game and choose to get Ghost Recon Breakpoint for free with the purchase of select Radeon graphics cards. Not only that, but you’ll also get 3 months of Xbox Game Pass for PC included!

19270654-B_19Q4-RadeonGameBundle_SocialBnrs_1024x512.jpg

Looking for a CPU instead? Participate in Ryzen’s Equipped to Win bundle to get a choice of Borderlands 3 or The Outer Worlds (or both with select processors) with the same opportunity to try out Game Pass.

Change is in the air

The end of the year is fast approaching, and that’s causing us to think about what’s next for our AMD Red Team community. That being said, we have some changes on the horizon we're very excited about, and we can’t wait to reveal more in November.

You may have noticed some updates to our Twitch page and Discord server over the past few months, and that was just the beginning. Soon you’ll be seeing more pop up across the web, so keep a sharp eye out as we’re headed into the holidays.

Until next time – stay classy, Red Team.

Introduction

What’s up, Red Team? From recent events to upcoming goodness, we’re here with your very first Red Team Rewind to keep you updated on all the latest ways to connect with the AMD Red Team community!

CNE Gaming Garage

For the second year in a row, AMDers descended on the beautiful city of Toronto to take part in the much-beloved Canadian National Exhibition. Hosting the AMD Gaming Garage was an incredible experience, and we can’t thank our partners and co-sponsors enough for making it even better.

pastedImage_1.jpg

From Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller emceeing the event to ExtraLife and the SickKids Foundation’s spirit of philanthropy, we were honored by the response the Garage received.

We welcomed thousands of gamers of all ages, gave away some awesome prizes, and most importantly shared in our love of being part of a global community of gamers. See you again next year, Toronto!

Gamescom

At Gamescom, the world’s largest event celebrating all things gaming, we showed off the latest games on over 800 AMD-powered systems across the show floor!

pastedImage_2.jpg

It was a blast meeting all of our Red Teamers on the floor and experiencing the love with all of you. Thanks for the warm welcome, Germany, and we’ll see you again next year!

PAX West

But the party didn’t stop there! AMD joined our friends at 2K and Gearbox to start some mayhem at PAX West 2019, giving players the chance to explore Pandora in crystal clarity.

pastedImage_5.png

We even teamed up with XIDAX to build beautiful, Vault Hunter-themed PCs! Powered by Ryzen and Radeon, these beauties can take you through the campaign in style. And guess what? You can even WIN one

pastedImage_1.jpg

We also celebrated the upcoming launch of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint with our friends at Ubisoft! Who else is ready to step into the boots of Ghost Recon fireteam leader "Nomad" for launch on October 4th?

We had a great time showing off the hottest upcoming titles and we can’t wait to see you on the Seattle show floor next year!

What’s Next?

Gears 5 Launch

 pastedImage_2.jpg

From one of gaming’s most acclaimed sagas, Gears 5 is bigger than ever! With five thrilling modes and the deepest campaign yet, Gears 5 launches worldwide on Tuesday, September 10th.

Borderlands 3 Launch

Borderlands 3 is almost here, baby! Loot your way through a mayhem-fueled adventure on Friday, September 13th. Don’t forget, you can preload on the 11th so you don’t miss a minute of the action.

pastedImage_1.jpg

Red Team Streamers Bear, Kiings, Bognogus, and Sonuchi are teaming up to take on Borderlands 3! Join us on the AMD Twitch channel on Saturday, September 14th from 11AM to 3PM CT to experience each new Vault Hunter firsthand.

Xbox Game Pass for PC VLAN

pastedImage_4.png

The next AMD Red Team VLAN is fast approaching, and what a big one this is going to be! On September 21st from 11AM CT/5PM GMT to 7PM CT/1AM GMT, we’ll be on the AMD Twitch channel and the Red Team Discord hanging out and playing games with your favorite streamers, showcasing all the awesome games available on Xbox Game Pass for PC.

Official rules can be found here, and, as always, all you have to do to register is comment on this thread. If you’re not able to game with us but still want to join in the fun, jump on Twitch and Discord to chat during the event.

As mentioned above, with this VLAN we’re showcasing all the great games you get on Xbox Game Pass for PC. If you buy a new Ryzen processor or Radeon graphics card, you’ll enjoy three free months of access to this library of over 100+ titles, and there are more being added all the time. This is a great chance to preview the pass and see what it's all about!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a VLAN without some prizes, and prizes there will be. You can now check out our Official Giveaway Rules to see what you can win and how to enter!

Either way you must be registered here on the forums to win, so make sure to sign up and comment in this thread before Friday, September 20th at 11:59:59PM CT when registration closes!

There’s nothing we love more than a day of gaming with our community, so come hang out with us and see what adventures await on Xbox Game Pass. We’ll be updating this blog with more details as we get closer to the event so stay tuned!

Howdy Red Team!

We’re spending 2019 celebrating AMD’s 50th Anniversary, and we wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the fun we’ve already had this year as a community. From our 50th Anniversary VLAN last Saturday and the launch of the #AMD50 Stories contest to a special surprise you’ll find out about below, there are a lot of exciting things happening (and only more to come)!

AMD 50th Anniversary VLAN

sonuchi.PNG

tyler2k 2.PNG

On May 4th, our AMD Stream Team joined forces with all of you to host a day of games, fun, and giveaways. We can’t thank you enough for coming out to join in on the celebration, and what a celebration it was! All in all, we had about 2,600 of you hanging out in Twitch and Discord playing some of your favorite games and vying for a chance to win some awesome prizes.

50th.png

We gave away four massive hardware bundles with 50th Anniversary products as well as copies of World War Z to our lucky winners, and we’re already looking forward to playing with you all again soon. In the meantime, our Stream Team is live every day, and they’re always happy to have you hanging out and chatting on our Twitch channel.

#AMD50 Stories

Another way we’ve been getting the community involved in the anniversary fun is through the #AMD50 Stories contest, where you have the opportunity to highlight some of your favorite AMD memories from over the years.

We’re still accepting entries until May 17th, but we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of our favorites so far:

blog1.PNG

w00t Doc and his friends enjoying the launch of Athlon 64. Nothing beats a launch event where you walk away with prizes!

blog2.PNG

Spending quality time with dad and hoping that everything went right with your first build!

blog4.PNG

Giddily returning home with your brand-new video card ready to enter a new age of gaming.

blog3.PNG

And, of course, meeting the love of your life and landing your dream job.

There are plenty more stories where that came from, and we want to hear yours too! Visit our posts on the Ryzen and Radeon Twitter pages to submit your favorite AMD memory for a chance to win some sweet 50th Anniversary hardware. We'll be selecting the winners randomly, and you can find the full rules here.

Last but not least... we're getting a fresh new look!

Many of you have been with us for years, and you've seen our style change over time. With it being AMD's 50th Anniversary, we're celebrating the past but also looking forward to the future. Without further ado, here's the new logo for all things Red Team:

red team.PNG

red team 2.PNG

As we look to continually grow the Red Team and establish ourselves as the very best gaming community to be part of, we want to make sure our style grows with it. This new logo is modern and refreshing while still maintaining the sleek, angular look we've come to know and love from our past branding.

We're so excited to start the next chapter on our community's journey, and this is just the beginning. Be on the lookout for changes that will take place on Twitch, our website, and right here on the forums. Over the next few months we'll be updating our online presence with our new look as well as offering you a variety of new content to explore.

Thanks to each and every one of you for making the AMD Red Team the amazing community that it is. We look forward to making it even better, and we're thrilled to have you all be an integral part of that process.

Everyone loves celebrating a birthday, and that’s why we’ve decided to hold an AMD 50th Anniversary VLAN Party! That’s right – we’re getting together to play some games and blow the candles out with our entire community, and you’re invited!

On May 4th from 11AM CT/5PM GMT to 7PM CT/1AM GMT, we’ll be on the AMD Twitch channel and the Red Team Discord hanging out and playing games with your favorite streamers.

Hey everyone,

My name’s Gary, and I’m your newest AMD and Red Team Community Manager! I’ve already had the chance to talk to a few of you, and I’m excited to get to know even more.

43490413_251964872343533_8831891898047668595_n-1 edit.png

About me:

It might come as no surprise to y’all that I mainly spend my free time playing video games, but I also love to hike, explore new restaurants and bars all over Austin, and also go see live music as much as possible. I graduated from UT with a communications degree with the idea that I would work in social media (preferably in video games), so here I am. Smiley Happy

Gaming:

I’ve been gaming for as long as I can remember, going back to NES when I was a wee lad. I play most of the major releases with particular interest in online shooters and action RPGs. When a hot, new single player title isn’t fresh off the presses, you can find me playing everything from Apex Legends and Blackout to Overwatch and Rainbow Six: Siege.

Industry work:

This is my first job in the games industry, but I’ve been working in social media for nearly half a decade now. I started off as a community manager serving companies of all kinds – everything from restaurants, bars, and BNBs to dentists, mechanics, and comic shops – and I’m both excited and hugely proud to now be working with AMD. It’s a dream of mine to infuse my passion with my profession, and I feel lucky to get the opportunity to accomplish that here.

Contact me:

You can find me on the Red Team Discord as gary_games. Feel free to reach out to me if you want to say hi or discuss anything AMD related! You can also find me on Twitter @gary_froniewski if you want to talk about anything else, but it is a personal account that doesn’t represent AMD in any way, so please be aware of that when you visit.

*Bonus picture of my derpy cat, Albus, included*

Happy (almost) New Year, Red Team!

From celebrating Ryzen’s one-year anniversary and launching a refreshed Red Team program, to community meet ups at PAX, TwitchCon and more, it’s been a packed and amazing year for AMD and our community. To celebrate, we’re counting down the five best moments of 2018.

#5: Community Meet Ups!

PAX, E3, CNE Gaming Garage and more, we were there and so were you—loud and proud. This year we put our stamp on gaming conventions all over the world. You showed us how pumped you were to get hands on experience with AMD products at Tokyo Game Show, China Joy, DreamHack and TwitchCon. While there, we hosted memorable Red Team meet ups with swag, giveaways, photobooths and social media contests: and we’re looking forward too many more in 2019!

pastedImage_47.pngpastedImage_45.png

#4: 12 Days of Streaming

To show our appreciation to our passionate community we kicked off a special event. Just in time for the holidays, we launched a special 12 Days of Streaming Twitch event. Alongside our special guests hosts NaomiKyle, iAmLucyMae, PancakePowTV and Kiings, we streamed for 12 days straight playing your favorite games, chatting about our products and giving away a few, too! We gave away processors, graphics cards, laptops and desktops to 12 lucky winners to enjoy!

pastedImage_2.pngpastedImage_3.png

#3: The new AMD Red Team

The AMD community leveled up in June when we rolled out new updates to the Red Team. We’ve expanded the Red Team banner to include 4 new teams to spotlight all of your skills, interests, and excitement for everything AMD. These new teams include: Streamers, Reviewers, Students, and the Street Team.

Whether you’re a fan-favorite streaming personality or a PC hardware guru, we’d love to have you play an integral role in our community in 2019 and beyond. If you bleed AMD Red and want to learn more about the Red Team programs, watch our community video and consider applying here.

pastedImage_26.pngpastedImage_4.png

#2: VLANs on VLANs on Super VLANs

We can’t complete this year’s highlights without remembering the VLANs we hosted in 2018. This year we held 3 VLANs with you all: the Superfan VLAN, the 2nd Gen Ryzen VLAN, and the AMD VLAN featuring MicroCenter. One of our favorites was the 12-Hour Superfan VLAN where so many of you showed up, gamed hard, and won Ryzen and Radeon powered PCs.

Hosting VLANs gives us the chance to introduce new faces and personalities to the stream, try out new games, and interact with the Red Team community. And then we throw in tons of prizes for fun!

pastedImage_0.pngpastedImage_1.png

#1: Ryzen’s 1st Birthday

And number one on the list? It’s only fitting that celebrating the one-year anniversary of Ryzen tops our year in review. The outpouring of support, excitement, and passion you showed with Ryzen coming into the market was nothing short of exceptional! We went big with Ryzen’s Birthday. Between VLANs, giveaways, an epic event at SXSW, and of course – Ryzen birthday cupcakes, this was the cherry on top of a great 2018 with our community.

pastedImage_13.pngpastedImage_14.png

Honorable Mention

Of course, when we talk about all the exciting community activities we took part in over 2018, we can’t forget about all the giveaways. Between VLANs, contests, and events, we created a ton of opportunities to win some awesome AMD hardware. Over the entire year, we gave away over $62K worth of prizes! Be sure to follow all our social channels in 2019 for more chances to win.

Thanks to each and every one of you for making 2018 a great year for AMD. We’re looking forward to what’s next in 2019, and we couldn’t do it without our devoted Red Team community. Here’s to a fantastic New Year together!

To keep up with what’s going on in the Red Team community in 2019, follow us Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Twitch!

But that’s not all. To make it extra special, NaomiKyle, iAmLucyMae, PancakePowTV, and Kiings will be your holiday hosts for all the festivities.

Each day we’ll be focusing on a different AMD product while playing games with all of you. We’ll be showing off Ryzen CPUs, Radeon GPUs, and AMD-powered laptops and desktops. Day 1 - Contest Announcement.gif

Would you pay a lot more for a pizza that’s only a little bigger? We certainly hope not. So why would you overpay for your CPU?

Unlike the other guys, we want to make sure you get the absolute best price per performance possible; and with Ryzen, you get incredible, award winning performance that’s readily available. To show how dedicated we are to making sure you enjoy that price to performance savings, we’re giving you a chance to win a Ryzen prize pack of your choice!

From Nov 9 through Nov 17, we want you to tell us what you’d buy using the money saved going with Ryzen over the competition. A new motherboard? Faster RAM? Extra money to enjoy this holiday season? Don’t just get a CPU. Get Ryzen AND more!

We’ll pick one winner each day from everyone who tweets to @AMDRyzen with hashtags #RyzenAND and #SweepstakesEntry. Each winner will receive a Ryzen 7 2700X AND their choice* from a long list of prize options. See the full contest rules for complete details.

Hello Red Team!

I’m Sean “The Pancake” Clanton, and I’m a new AMD and Red Team Community Manager!

About me:

I play video games, disc golf, have worked for a few different game studios, watch a lot of anime and sci-fi, read a great deal of fantasy novels, and love horror movies. I’m a bit of a metalhead and have been known to be found in a mosh pit, but I’m also a total geek and love all things Star Wars, Star Trek, LotR, Doctor Who, etc., I’ve also been told I have waaaay too many Funko figures (is that even possible?). Oh, and in my spare time I like to tinker with making craft beer.

Gaming:

I’ve been a video game junkie for most of my life. Saved up all my birthday money when I was 6 to buy my first console, and been gaming ever since. I mostly play MMORPGs and ARPGs, but will give anything a go. I’ve been a PC gamer since Ultima Online and was an original beta tester for WoW. I now mostly play Final Fantasy XIV and Diablo 3, and I’m doing my best to wait for Monster Hunter to release on PC. I’ve been building PCs since vanilla WoW, and have hosted quite a few Diablo 2 and Quake LAN parties back in the day.

Industry work:

I’ve worked in the PC/Gaming industry for quite some time. After an initial stint in the marketing agency world working for the likes of Hyatt and Hilton Hotels, I transitioned over to video games. I earned my first gaming stripes at Red 5 Studios leading all the social efforts for Firefall from closed beta all the way to its unfortunate demise. After that, I moved over to Carbine Studios handling social for WildStar where I managed all social media operations, as well as a lot of behind-the-scenes work with livestreamers and YouTubers. Most recently, I was the social media manger for NCSOFT working on Blade & Soul, Aion, Lineage 2, and Master X Master (RIP). I’ve handled everything from livestreams, to customer care, to social media operations, to event management.

Contact me:

You can always find me on the Red Team Discord as ThePancake. Feel free to reach out to me anytime for your AMD-related needs or if you just want to send me pics of your doggos. You can also find me on Twitter a lot, but don’t expect much AMD talk there. It’s for my personal amusement and doesn’t represent AMD in any way, so please respect that if you decide to give me a follow.

That’s me, and I’m excited to get to know all of you!

by Annie Lee

Guess who’s back?

QCRuby-SocialBanners-1200x630_V1A.png

AMD’s iconic Ruby returns! Years after being dormant from her adventures, Ruby is making her appearance once more in the public eye—this time, as a skin for Nyx in Bethesda’s highly-anticipated arena shooter Quake Champions.

Nyx Becomes Ruby in Quake Champions

Our beloved Ruby takes after the fashion of Nyx, the playable assassin in the fast-paced arena shooter. With her abilities like “Ghost Walk” and a stealthy approach to fragging players, Ruby/Nyx is going to be one delightful character to speed around with.

Are you eager to play as AMD’s treasured hero in this fast-paced arena? Here’s how you can unlock her skin for Nyx:

  • Purchase a Radeon™ RX 580, 570 or 560 from participating retailers, or
  • Purchase a powerful Ryzen™ 5 or Ryzen™ 7 processor from participating retailers

Today, courtesy of AMD sending me both an RX 570 to test with and a Ryzen 5 1500X based system, I will be looking at the performance of the RX 570 and how to overclock it.

The system I’m testing on is listed below:

CPU: Ryzen 5 1500X

CPU Cooler: AMD Wraith Max

Motherboard: Gigabyte B350 Gaming 3

GPU:  Aorus RX 570

RAM: 32 GB G.Skill DDR4 @ 2400 Mhz

HDD: 2 TB Seagate

Case: Cybertron PC case

PSU: 650 Watt Cybertron PSU (Gold rated)

Some photos of the GPU, which is quite the beast of a card being a well designed GPU. The front of the Aorus RX 570 has a dual fan design with a black and orange shroud, and you can see the fairly beefy heatpipes and aluminum as well:

On the backside of the GPU, there is a backplate and a copper GPU heatsink as well.

awdasd.jpg

When installed, the GPU has a RGB panel on it that can be controlled through Aorus software tools, and it can be seen here in all it's RGB glory!

First things first when it comes to overclocking: you will need the latest drivers and software for your system. In my case that is the Radeon 17.4.4 drivers, from the AMD website- but as new drivers come out this will vary, and you can find the latest drivers on the AMD website. You may want to install custom software to overclock with your GPU, but the built in Radeon Wattman should do well for most users, and is what I will be using in this guide. Some other options include MSI Afterburner, Aorus Graphics Engine, and Sapphire TriXX to name a few. The other thing you will need is a good GPU stress test, I tend to use GPUPI which is a benchmark, but if you set it to the 100B test it will crank the GPU to 100% for a number of hours which is a good indication if you have a stable overclock or not. Another great tool is Furmark, although sometimes it has issues it still is a good way to test if you are running to high of an overclock for the GPU cooler to handle.

Once you have drivers installed you should run games and benchmarks at stock settings to see how the card performs, and if you want to overclock at all if the performance is good enough for what you want to play games at. I will do this with a variety of games and benchmarks, starting with 3dmark Firestrike.

3drmarkfirestock.png

Next up is Metro Last Light Redux. The settings are below:

sdfsdffffffffffffffffffffffffffff.png

And the results from 3 runs are an average of 44.82 FPS at max settings at 1080P, as you can see below.

metrollstock1.png

The next game I’ll be testing is Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, and the settings I used are below:

20170629000925_1.jpg

20170629000935_1.jpg

After running the benchmark three times, the average FPS with the above settings was 91.266 FPS.

The next game I’ll test to see the stock performance of is Tomb Raider 2013, which is an incredibly GPU bound game. The settings I used for testing are below:

asfasdfsdfsdf.png

An average of three runs of the benchmark in game gave a result of 146.67, which is buttery smooth at 1080P. Example of one of the results below:

20170629002001_1.jpg

Now that the stock performance has been tested, time to get ready to overclock. When using Radeon Wattman, you simply need to pull up the Radeon Settings by right clicking on the desktop or clicking on it from the icons in windows. From  there you will need to go to the “Gaming” tab in the settings as seen below:

gamingtab.png

And then click on the Global Settings tab, which will bring you to this tab.

globalset.png

Click over onto the Global Wattman tab and you will be in Radeon Wattman, the built in overclocking tool. You can see all kind of information here, like clock speeds, fan settings, RPM, and etcetera. For an RX 570, this is about what is should look like by default, and there are some important settings to take note of.

First off, the page with the green bars and power states are typically for more advanced users who want to fine tune how fast the GPU is at different states. For example, when idling, (Performance State 0) typically the GPU will sit at 300 mhz. Or when watching Youtube or netflix, it will kick up to 600 mhz..

For the purposes of this article, I’ll just be tuning the last two power states- the full load and Boost settings as they will impact gaming the most. I also switched the setting to show the speed in Mhz instead of percentages, so it is easier to read.

dasdasdddddddddddd.png

The next part of Wattman is the memory overclocking page, which is similar to the GPU speed one in the performance states graph. However it only has one as memory runs at the same speed all the time. This part of Wattman also shows the fan and power limit settings, which are useful for control the temperature and the amount of power the GPU can use (respectively). The fan settings are pretty straightforward, and you can find ones that work for you or you can let Wattman pick the fan speed automatically- though that may not work as well for keeping temps down. The power limit I will go into more later in the article.

asdasjdkljashdlkjhh.png

To begin overclocking, just increase the frequency of the GPU core by small amounts, like 25mhz increments, and then test to see if GPUPI, Furmark, or the games you like are stable with it. If the GPU crashes in the stress tests, or gets too hot than you have found the limit of the GPU. The max temperature you usually want an RX series card is around 95 Celsius, and they can safely run to about 90C without issues. If you go higher than that, you can risk damage to the GPU.

But, if you have thermal head room- like 5 or 10 degrees Celsius extra (or more) you can make the power limit higher without any problems. This setting will automatically give, for example, up to 10% more power to the GPU if you set it to +10%. The max setting is +50% and I typically will run somewhere between +25% and +50% as long as temps are good on RX series cards.

Once you have increased the power limit from the default settings, you'l need to test the stress tests again to see if the added power has brought stability. If it has, you can keep adding the small frequency bumps until the card isn't stable again- and then add more power limit again. Typically you will reach a barrier of either stability of temperature before too long, but a 5-15% overclock on the GPU is about normal for most RX 570s.

On to my testing of the Aorus RX 570, which did pretty fairly by achieving a 1405 Mhz overclock on the GPU core, while staying at a max of 73C with a power limit of +50%. Any higher and the GPU would not be very stable through runs of Metro Last Light and GPUPI. That is about a 10% overclock over the stock 1244 Mhz boost clock (or about a 6% overclock over the boost clok of the Aorus card, which has a boost speed of 1330 Mhz), which isn't bad at all and it stayed fairly quiet as well. For those interested the settings I used are pictured below.

hsgfdkjshdgf.png

asdkjajshdgh.png

Now for the results of the overclocks on performance, starting with 3DMark Firestrike.

3dmarkoced.png

In Firestrike, the around 6-10% boost from the stock speed of the Aorus RX 570 amounted to a 5% overall improvement, which is a very decent amount. Not quite linear, but close to it.

Next up is Metro Last Light Redux and the overclocked system got an average FPS of 47 FPS, vs the 44.82 FPS of stock which amounts to about a 5% performance increase as well.

safdsfdffffffffff.png

Next up is Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, which when the RX 570 is overclocked, got an average of 95.71 FPS over three runs of the benchmark. This compared to the stock performance of 91.266 there is about another 5% speed increase, which is quite a decent improvement.

Last but not least, Tomb Raider 2013 at 1080P ultra got an average of 156 FPS when the RX 570 is overclocked, vs the 146.67 FPS when stock which is a 6.3% increase. This is a more linear increase in speed, as Tomb Raider 2013 is a very GPU dependent game so it sees a greater increase from overclocking.

In conclusion, I hope this guide has helped you figure out the basics of how to overclock using Radeon Wattman, and how to test GPU overclocking on the RX 570 GPUs in general! If you have any thoughts, questions, comments let me know in the comments I’m more than happy to help. If you would like me to test other games or go more into depth on anything let me know as well, i can do that too!

Also special thanks to AMD for the 1500X and motherboard and Aorus for the RX 570 to test and review.

01 NZXT_MANTA_BOX.jpg

With AMD’s Ryzen launch, I’ve started gathering parts for my new PC. I’m really looking forward to this build, as I’m anxiously awaiting mITX boards for AM4 processors. With that in mind, I purchased a NZXT Manta mITX case. There are a few reasons for choosing this particular case, not the least is that NZXT has a history of building quality enclosures that aren't just a square box. I tend to like cases that standout instead of trying to blend in. Another is the support for dual 280 radiators, and a reservoir, as this will be my first custom loop build. No, it’s not the smallest ITX case out there, and I’m fine with that. To me it’s the right size for a complete gaming rig, that even with all the bells and whistles, still has a smaller footprint. Let’s take a look.

02 NZXT_MANTA_Front.jpg

NZXT calls the Manta a “High-performance small form factor mini-ITX case.”

  • Fully filtered, easy-to-remove intake
  • Integrated PSU shroud for a beautifully clean build
  • Kraken X61-ready with push/pull capabilities
  • Dual 280mm liquid cooling support
  • Double the cable management space
  • Elegant, curved steel paneling and window
  • New manufacturing technology offers unparalleled build quality

Here are the specs from their website:

03 NZXT_MANTA_WINDOWED SIDE.jpg

The large side panel window gives an unfettered view of the interior. More on that in a bit, but first let’s take a trip around the outside.

04 NZXT_MANTA_Right Side.jpg

As you can see, all the outer panels are curved, and I like the contrast of the matte white paint with black accents. The side panels stand out from the sides a bit giving the chassis room to take air in, and exhaust it.

05 NZXT_MANTA_Back.jpg

Around the back there is additional venting in the top panel, the opening for the motherboard I/O ports, 2 expansion slots, and the opening for an ATX PSU. The side panels are held on with captive thumb screws.

06 NZXT_MANTA_Top.jpg

Up top there is the power button, 2 USB 3.0 ports, and the headphone and mic inputs along with the power LED.

07 NZXT_MANTA_Inside.jpg

With the side removed, we can get a better look at the inside. The Manta comes with 3 120mm fans preinstalled – 2 in the front, and 1 in the rear. There is also 2 2.5” drive mounts on the right side. There are plenty of cutouts in the motherboard tray to make for a clean build, and the motherboard standoffs are preinstalled.

08 NZXT_MANTA_Rear 3 Quarter.jpg

Next to the 2.5” mounts is an area that will allow for the routing of cables while keeping them hidden. It is also fairly deep to help keep the 24 pin snake under control.

09 NZXT_MANTA_Inside Bottom.jpg

The vented PSU shroud covers most of the bottom, and includes an opening for your GPU cables, stopping short of the front to allow for the installation of a radiator.

10 NZXT_MANTA_Inside Top.jpg

Up top there is the mounting point for a second 280 rad, or 2 140mm fans.

11 NZXT_MANTA_Rear Open.jpg

With the right side panel removed, we get a look at what the Manta has available for cable management. There are numerous cable tie down points, and the curve of the panel further increases the space available. As you can see the bottom portion is wide open which will make cable routing a snap.

12 NZXT_MANTA_Hdd Mount PSU Area.jpg

A closer look at the bottom shows the removable filter for the PSU, and the mounting point for a 3.5” storage drive.

13 NZXT_MANTA_Fan Hub.jpg

Also on the back there is a fan hub with support for up to 8 fans.

14 NZXT_MANTA_Front Filter.jpg

With the front cover removed, we can see the front filter, which is easily removable.

15 NZXT_MANTA_Filter Removed.jpg

Here we see the 2 preinstalled 120mm fans, and the mounting points for 140mm fans and/or radiators. The top and front covers come off, and are easy to replace.

16 NZXT_MANTA_Bottom.jpg

On the bottom there are 2 large U-shaped feet that provide a good deal of clearance allowing the PSU to breathe freely, and 4 rubber strips to keep the case in place on your desk.

03 NZXT_MANTA_WINDOWED SIDE.jpg

Well there’s a look at my new PC’s home. I hope you enjoyed it, and stick around, as I will be taking a look at the other components that will make up the build, and of course the build itself. For now, the Manta will get boxed back up, and shipped off to my good friend and fellow RTP member Ian aka @torn_tv. He will be repainting the interior all white, and applying some vinyl decals for me.

A couple of things I admire about AMD are their commitment to the gaming community, and supporting grassroots efforts to build that community. Case in point – I recently had the opportunity to help a local community gaming competition. The Berwick Theater is a small independent movie theater that had a great idea for a fundraiser – holding a Halo gaming competition using that giant movie screen to display all that great action on. They are using an Xbox One, which has a custom AMD SOC powering it, as that allows them an easy way to display 4 players at the same time. One of my friends is on the Board of directors, knew I was a member of AMD Red Team Plus, and reached out to me to see if I could help.

01 BT Boxes.jpg

Of course I said yes. Time to spring into action! To get the ball rolling, I contacted Erin at AMD and asked if they would be able to donate something for a prize. They blew me away and offered a FX 8370 CPU, Sapphire RX 460 GPU, Asus Sabertooth Tuf motherboard, and a Samsung 850 EVO SSD!

I said to myself, with a few more items, I could put together a nice system as a Grand Prize. Immediately I thought of my good friend, and fellow RTP member Ian Johansson. He does YouTube reviews for Rosewill, and he really hooked me up. He sent me Rosewill’s brand new Bradley ATX case, RX 9300 mechanical keyboard, and RGM 400 gaming mouse along with their Valens 600w modular PSU!

Almost there, just a few more items. MePush, the IT comapny that I work for, came to the rescue and provided a copy of Windows 10, and a Western Digital 1TB storage drive. I already had 16GB of Gskill ram available, and I got a 5 pack of Apevia LED 120mm fans to finish it off. The theater completed the package with an Asus VG245 Freesync 24” monitor. It was time to build!

And build I did. Take a look!

02 BT Front.jpg04 BT Window close up.jpg03 BT With Monitor.jpg

Our Grand Prize is alive and looking good with a nice view through that window. Let’s take a look inside.

05 BT Side off 3 quarter front.jpg06 BT Side off 3 quarter rear.jpg

Someone is going to walk away with this bad boy, and I hope it serves them well. Thank you to AMD, Ian and Rosewill, and MePush for helping make this possible.

So, you’re looking to buy a new laptop and asking, what now? The answer to “what should I get?” can be answered many ways. It all comes down to how you plan to use your new laptop.

In this series, we’ll look at a variety of different uses, starting with the average, every day user. Someone who just wants to troll social media, make a few memes, write a paper and listen to music. If that’s you, or someone you know, read on for the top 5 categories you should look for in a laptop.

Processor

The processor is the brain of your computer, and will have a huge impact on your PC’s performance. AMD created the APU (accelerated processing unit) to cover your CPU and GPU needs in one chip, maximizing power while saving space and battery. For a reliable, simple laptop, look at our A series of APUs. This will give you the power and graphics you need, at a low cost.

RAM

RAM (random-access memory) is what stores your most frequently used program instructions to increase your system’s speed. Budget systems usually come with 2GB, but we recommend 4-8GB of RAM for this scenario.

Storage Drive

This is pretty straight forward, as this is where everything on your computer is stored. If you’re looking for a PC to browse and save a few photos and songs, you don’t need a large amount of storage. Going with 250-500GB should suffice.

Battery Life

If you’re going to leave your laptop on a desk and plugged in, this isn’t important. If you plan to bring it on the go, you want to find a battery with 8+ hours of life. Watching movies and other videos will effect battery life, but simple browsing will extend the life of the laptop.

Graphics Chip

Graphics are important to your browsing experience, but you don’t need to go overboard! Lucky for you, Radeon graphics are built into every AMD APU, meaning you’ve got the same graphics gamers and creative professionals love without having to worry about choosing a laptop GPU. You’ll save money on this step and still get the performance you need.

With what we’ve listed, you should be set to make a purchase on a very reliable laptop. Follow these guidelines and you can get the performance you want without breaking the bank.

Come back soon, when we’ll talk work laptops!

Happy national clean out your PC day! Our gift to you? Four simple, performance boosting tips for a clean PC!

Disabling Startup Items

We can see it now: you turn on your PC, and upon boot a litany of programs open. So many pop up that you can’t do anything with your PC for a few minutes. By having all these programs load at startup, you’re overloading your CPU, and in turn slowing down the entire PC.

Sometimes, these programs aren’t front facing, so you don’t have the ability to just close them like a window. Now, we’ll walk you through how to disable these programs.

First, right click on your task bar, and select “Task Manager.”

pastedImage_0.png

Second, click on “More Details” at the bottom of the Task Manager.

task.PNG

Third, click on the “Startup” tab, and it will display all programs set to boot at you PC’s start.

task2.PNG

Lastly, you’ll want to disable any non-important programs. Windows is great in that it gives you the level of impact the program has on your computer. You can disable all without serious adverse effect on your system. Some “Low” programs can be left on, such as Java and Defender.

Just like that, you’ve sped up your boot time, and prevented your CPU from being crippled when you first turn it on.

Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is a simple tool that Microsoft has been included on Windows for quite some time now. To access Disk Cleanup, simply search for it via the Start Menu or Cortana. Once you run the cleanup, it will run through your system and delete unnecessary things like temporary or cache files. This will free up space on your hard drive, and increase performance.

First, search for “Disk Cleanup” on your laptop or PC. (It may begin with a quick calculation of what it can clear up for you.)

Image result for windows 10 disk cleanup search

Second, you will select what drive you wish to purge. If you have multiple drives, you can select the ones you want to clean.

pastedImage_3.png

Third, after you have selected the drives, click “OK”

The tool will then do the work for you. It’s that simple! Once this finishes you'll be rid of the necessary files slowing your computer’s performance down.

Uninstalling Applications

We all have unused applications, it happens. In a moment’s notice, you download a random program, install it, use it, and never touch it again. Uninstalling unused application can also improve performance of your PC.

As with the Disk Cleanup, this is easy to do. All you need to do is search for “Control Panel" in your Start Menu, or with Cortana. (Side note on Windows 8.X or 10, you can right click the start menu and select Programs and Features.)

pastedImage_4.png

When you first open your Control Panel, you’ll want to select “Programs and Features.”

pastedImage_5.png

Once that panel is open, you are free to go in and uninstall anything you don’t use. (Don’t uninstall Microsoft programs, as they may be necessary for your computer to run.)

Not only have you just cleaned up your hard drive, you may have uninstalled the background functions of these programs. That allows your PC to increase real time computes, and work at a faster pace.

Remove the Dust

Much like everything else in your home, your laptop or PC will collect dust. Fans are a magnet for dust and, if clogged, could drastically impact the performance of your PC. Cleaning the inside and outside of your computer on a regular basis can prevent major issues.

There are two options to cleaning the dust from your PC, compressed air or a vacuum. This is hotly debated in the PC world, so we’ll let you choose which you use. Compressed air is one of the easiest ways to clear the dust, but tends to go everywhere else in the room. While vacuuming is also effective, trying to manage the vacuum in the confines of a PC can be frustrating.

Cleaning your PC is necessary to increasing the longevity of your computer. If you follow these steps 1-3 times a year, you’ll see improvements in the way your computer functions. As always, you can find us on Twitter at @AMDLaptop, we’re here to help you with any questions you may have!

Knowing when to buy a new computer can be difficult, and upgrading with every wave of new hardware isn’t logical. Sometimes it just seems easier to ignore computer problems when they arise. We get used to the performance of our PC, learn to live with the laptop always plugged in, and just ignore that broken USB port. Anything to avoid the hassle of laptop shopping, right? Well, we say enough with the lagging track pad and missing space bar! It’s time to stop the denial. If one or more of these symptoms fit your PC, it’s time to upgrade:

Your PC is slow.

Dino Gif.gif
When you first got your laptop, it was blazing fast, and started up in seconds. Now, you can brew a pot of coffee in the time it takes to boot. Performance may also tank when you’re browsing the internet. Multitasking is a thing of the past, gone are the glory days of streaming music, browsing Reddit, ordering a pizza and writing a paper all at once. Now you’re lucky if you can start a presentation and check your email at the same time.

While you can clean up your PC and gain some speed, most of the time the slowness is just a sign that your laptop has seen better days.

You’ve run out of space.
lego.gif
Running out of space is something you just can’t avoid. Eventually, all the cat pictures and random things you download eat away at your hard drive. Your hard drive is a very important piece to your computer, and filling it up can effect performance as well. If you have to delete 10 things just to download something else, you may need to start looking for a new laptop.

You can replace your hard drive, but when you get to the point that you’ve filled a large hard drive, it’s usually a sign to upgrade.

Your PC needs to be fixed regularly.
brokeded.gif
This is the most telling sign that you need to replace your laptop. There’s a time in a laptop’s life that everything starts breaking. You bring it to be fixed, and 3 days after you get it back something else needs to be fixed. When your PC has to be fixed multiple times, there could be many reasons. Different parts are failing, your storage is limited, or your parts are becoming obsolete. Sometimes, though, you can replace the parts, but this can be more expensive than a new system. In most cases, skip the upgrades, as it’s probably more efficient to get a new system. PCs have a life cycle, and many times, this is the last leg.

So, when you have to fix your laptop regularly, you need to replace it.

Your PC makes weird noises.
ezgif.com-optimize.gif
There are a lot of moving parts in a laptop. Fans, disk drives, and more can all get loose, or stop working the right way. When this happens, your laptop will start to make less than pleasant noises. While you may feel compelled to let it express its DJ prowess, resist the urge because it’s time to start looking for PC who’s rattling fan doesn’t outplay your speakers.

If you’ve noticed these signs of distress in your laptop, it’s probably time to retire it. Don’t fret, though! Buying a new laptop doesn’t have to be painful when you’ve got @AMDLaptop on your side. We find the best deals on AMD laptops and take the hard work out of shopping, so you can get back to making fire memes.

Let me start by saying that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a beautiful, rich, futuristic game that allows you to play through the eyes of Adam Jensen.  Adam takes advantage of two different styles of game play, you can either go in stealthy or be loud and proud, shooting up the place.  I'm not particularly a stealthy person so going in guns-a-blazing was my main expertise through the campaign.

maxresdefault (1).jpg

I particularly like the many augmentations acquired throughout the game.   These augments bring a "talent-tree" type skill base that the player can freely choose to enhance their particular play style.  Need some help manipulating conversations or maybe need to hack a computer faster? Adam has it covered.  Acquiring and upgrading these augments give the game that RPG feeling that I love.

In Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the plot is about finding out who are the gold-masked augmented mercenaries, terrorists, and the Illuminati. The story helps with multiple choices that allow me to decide what I want to happen throughout the game.  Multiple choice games are always interesting, due to the different paths you can take with differing consequences.  So, I can play through the game again, but this time, a more stealthy version of the story.

Steam now also has a virtual reality experience for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. This virtual experience takes a look at various locations that were part of the main story through the eyes of Adam.  You can move around freely and appreciate the amount of detail each area has to offer. Some of these areas are Dubai, Golem City, and Adam’s apartment with that "BIG" TV. I am keen to see how much farther the developers will take this VR experience and shape it into the hacking and shooting experience that is the campaign.

So, you’ve heard of this “overclocking” thing right? Not sure what it is, or afraid of blowing up your PC when doing it? Well, here is a guide on the basics on overclocking for you. To make sure you don’t set anything on fire, or otherwise break any hardware, or anything like that (which would be bad).

So where do we start? Well, here are a few pieces of information you will need to know throughout this guide.

BCLK or Baseclock

The base speed of the CPU.

Multiplier

Usually in 20x or similar format, this times the BCLK is the speed the CPU runs at.

Vcore

Volts of the CPU. Usually formatted like 1.20v or similar.

Frequency

The overall speed of your CPU, for example an FX 8370 has a stock frequency of 4000 Mhz.

BIOS

The BIOS is where you do all the tuning of your hardware, you will need to learn how to navigate the one on your motherboard to overclock.

CPU Temp

The temperature of the processor, MSI afterburner measures it well.

Memory speed

Frequency of the memory. It’s the BIOS as well as the OS.

So those are the basic terms you’ll need to know to start. There are a TON more, but for the purposes of this guide (being a very basic how-to) I’ll not get into all the things like LLC calibration, and other settings that more advanced overclocking will implement.

First things first: Install CPUz and a temperature monitoring software of your choice. I usually go with MSI Afterburner, as it has temperature reading for ALL THE THINGS and it’s very accurate, and I typically will also install either AMD Overdrive (on AMD-based systems) or Intel XTU (on Intel rigs). Hwmonitor is also a good monitoring program, although it sometimes doesn't read AMD CPU temps very well. Once you have those set up, and configured with the settings you want, then always keep the temperature monitors on screen or in the background to see what the temps are.

Why do I say this? Because the temps are the biggest factor in whether or not to keep an overclock- if they are okay, then you are set.

What are good temperatures?

Well, that depends greatly but for the most part on AMD systems you want to stay under 60-65* C while under 100% load. On most intel systems, the max you want to hit is 85* C under 100% load of the CPU. These temps will keep your CPU from dying too early, which isn’t an issue most of the time anyway but it will keep the CPU’s from degrading over time as well.

Next up:

Download a few CPU tests to see if the overclocks will be stable. I usually use Geekbench 4, Cinebench R15, GPUPI, and lastly CPUz Stress Test to test if my overclock is stable. You can also do benchmarks like 3Dmark to test the CPU as well. I typically start off with benches that will hammer the CPU like Cinebench R15 and Geekbench, and then test ones like 3dmark 11 to see if the CPU is also stable during heavy gaming loads, but you can choose which ones you like.

Now that you’ve set up monitoring software and benchmarking tools, comes the part that is more interesting. You will need to restart your computer and boot into the bios, typically by using the delete key or one of the function buttons.

To demonstrate the various settings I’ll use the Sabertooth 990FX R3.0 and FX 8370, however the settings you have may look different if it is a different motherboard. With that being said, the core settings like vcore, frequency, etc, are all universal so I can show you those and how to use them to do basic overclocking.

So, once you are in the BIOS it should look something like this:

From here you can see the various settings that can be changed. What you then need to do to overclock is switch the overclock settings from Auto to Manual (Asus calls this AI Overclock Tuner, other companies have other names for the same function). This will make it so you are the one that sets the various settings, not any kind of automatic BIOS setting.

First things first:

Read and take note of what all of the settings are by default. Take particular attention to what the CPU, memory, and the other voltage settings are on your motherboard and write them down- you need these for reference. Also take note of the stock speed of the BCLK, Multiplier, and RAM- so that you know the settings that are guaranteed to work if an overclock fails.

Now that you have taken note of the stock settings, the first thing you should always do is see how far you can get the CPU to run on the stock voltages. All that is required for this is to change the multiplier from (in the case of the FX 8370) the stock multiplier of 20, to a multiplier of 20.5- and then save that and reboot.

If it works and boots into windows, then run the benchmark tools to make sure it is stable. I run them from anywhere between an hour or 12 hours, depending on how sure of stability I want to be. If that works, then repeats the process and raise the multiplier again.

Keep doing the above method, until Windows no longer boots- OR Windows crashes when running one of the benchmarks. Geekbench 4 in particular will crash an unstable system.

When this happens- don’t worry- it’s just the CPU not having enough power. You need to go back into the BIOS and this time look at the volts of the CPU.

Remember those default values that you wrote down earlier? Well, here is where they will come in handy. Look at the default value for the CPU volts, and then raise it by .05v. If you still don’t have stability in benchmarks and stress tests, then raise the volts again by another increment.

You can do this until it is either stable, or the CPU is getting above the earlier mentioned maximum temperatures (60-65C on AMD, 85C on Intel). You typically won’t have to worry about having way too many volts going through the CPU if you have really good cooling. If you have good enough cooling than you should be able to run the volts pretty high without worrying about it, *until* about 1.55V which is about the highest you ever want to run 24/7 on an AMD CPU, and on an Intel CPU, about 1.35 volts is about the most you will want to run for 24/7 use.

So, you have increased the multiplier… and put more volts through the CPU if needed? What next?

Well… that’s about it really. Overclocking is actually, fairly simple as long as you keep the temperatures within the limits, and don’t put a massive amount of volts through the CPU. I’ll be putting out a guide soon going over GPU overclocking as well, so stay tuned for that! If have any feedback, questions, or comments feel free to let me know in the comments! I'm more than willing to help with any overclocking related things, among other things as well.

If you would like you can check out Hwbot, which is a way to compete with other overclockers around the world by trying to get the most out of your hardware. The AMD Red Team has a Hwbot team here: AMD Red Team @ HWBOT   and I am the team captain there, so if you would like to join in go ahead! It's open for anyone. I've written a quick guide already for how to submit to Hwbot here if you'd like to learn how as well you can check it out: A guide for submitting results on Hwbot.org!
