With (at least some) NVIDIA cards it is possible to use OpenCL simply by loading kernel driver and no X session is required. Is something similar possible with ATI cards?
I'm looking to do the same thing. Please post any information, if you find any. I haven't had much luck in finding anything that works yet. At least for linux.

it is not possible.

Why is that?
because Xserver load fglrx driver.
It also does the same for nvidia but running modprobe nvidia does enable OpenCL computations however running modprobe fglrx doesn't enable OpenCL for ATI cards

That's what I thought. modprobe alone should do the job.
