How to get maximum performance under xfree

Hi all,

I am trying to display synchronized animations at 60Hz, in HD like 720p or more.

I am running an ubuntu box with a radeon 2400, and apparently what I want to do, does not come out-of-the box. I tried unsuccessfully to get Pseudo-color Visual, use OpenGL rendering or enable overlays ... at 1280x720 nothing can reach 60 fps. I am a bit lost.

My question: what's the fastest way to display large images and how to keep sync with the retrace ? Is there a way to directly access a graphical layer (ideally in 8-bit palettized colors), short-cutting Xorg ?

Thanks for help
