I was having the exact same problem after the most recent update for catalyst. I tried downloading older versions and tried all available hot fixes and nothing worked. I actually found out that somehow the device muted itself. I went into my playback devices and checked the properties of the HDMI output device and saw it was muted under the levels tab. Not sure how it happened but it fixed it.
