In our Shared Values blog series, we explore ways in which business and community success intersect – and what AMD is doing at those intersections. Today, I’m pleased to highlight AMD’s 22nd annual corporate responsibility update, an in-depth look at the company’s impact in society, on the environment, and within the communities where our company and employees call home.

“At AMD, we create leadership semiconductor solutions that are designed to help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges,” says AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su. “We are extremely proud to build high-performance computing and graphics products that lead the industry, and to do that in a manner that leaves the world a better place.”

This past year has been momentous in the company’s 48-year legacy, as our engineers and business teams around the world have launched new architectures for computing and graphics, code-named “Zen” and “Vega.” This has been no easy feat. In close collaboration with our technology partners, new AMD-based products are entering datacenters, machine learning, student education, university research, growing businesses, home entertainment and elsewhere.

In bringing AMD technology to market, we are proud to do so through the lens of people, planet, and purpose. The opportunities to make a meaningful impact on the challenges facing us all are great, and the technology resources at our disposal also continue to grow, right alongside the desire to create positive change through the application of innovative solutions. At AMD, this approach is not an “add on,” but a “how to.”  Through our products and presence, we strive to positively impact the people touched by our technology in the planet we share through the design and integration of technology that serves a meaningful purpose.

In this year’s update, we highlight the following priorities and engagements, plus many others:

  • Helping ensure that working conditions throughout our supply chain are safe, and that everyone involved in delivering AMD products – from the design lab to the manufacturing line – is treated with dignity and respect. We set high standards for our suppliers and regularly review and help support their compliance. See also this human rights and labor issue brief.
  • Creating an inclusive work environment where our employees bring their unique perspective and passion to work every day. AMD’s employee resource groups are integral to company culture, and support AMD’s 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index.

  • Designing energy efficient processors while continuing to meet consumers’ performance expectations. Through AMD’s award-winning 25x20 Energy Efficiency Initiative, the company remains on track to reach an ambitious goal, and third-parties are taking notice of the company’s achievements. See also this energy efficiency issue brief.
  • Remaining committed to operations that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and electricity use. The Science Based Targets Initiative verifies that AMD’s 2020 climate goals are in line with reductions needed to address climate change and transition to a low carbon economy.
  • Giving back to our site communities through the time and talent of our workforce in company-sponsored volunteer events.  In our third annual day of service, 1,640 AMDers at 20 sites worldwide headed out of the office to contribute in their communities.  This year through 6,400 volunteer hours, we collectively helped prepare 44,000 meals, planted over 1,000 trees and seedlings, collected over 900 pounds of trash, and more. Company volunteer events occur throughout the year, as well.

  • Bringing the excitement of virtual reality into the education classroom. As a showcase for educators around the world, AMD and HTC teamed up to bring virtual reality headsets and the personal computers needed to power them to a school in Nashville, Tennessee, where students used the technology to deepen their knowledge of geography, history, and more.
  • Delivering state-of-the art medical imaging into health care. Barco, Inc. leverages AMD’s graphics technology to deliver more precise and detailed diagnostic displays, enabling radiologists to improve their efficiency and accuracy in making diagnoses.

We thank our workforce, technology partners and communities around the world for joining with AMD as we continue to deliver technology designed to help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges.
