DPMS issues for Radeon 9600 in a G5 running Linux

I have a PowerMac G5 running Yellow Dog 6.. It has a Radeon 9600 connected to a monitor via a DVI cable. The Xorg release is 7.1.1. It seems to work ok. ... Except for DPMS. It can NOT put the monitor into power save. Given what is going on with the environment I would hope that this can be addressed! ... Please!?!

This causes my LCD monitor to be black (dark gray) but with the backlight still on. I am pretty sure this is bad for the monitor. Similar to having a CRT monitor be bright white when blanked!
