RX 460 Drivers Will Not Update Properly

I have tried several different ways to try and update my drivers. The specs are:

  • AMD R7 RX 460
  • Laptop, Asus R510I
  • Windows 10 64 bit
  • Driver Version: Currently: 21.19.141.0, have tried to install 18.9.1 but Windows stops the driver service

System Manufacturer: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.

             System Model: X550IU

                     BIOS: X550IU.300 (type: UEFI)

                Processor: AMD FX-9830P RADEON R7, 12 COMPUTE CORES 4C+8G  (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz

                   Memory: 8192MB RAM

The issue I am trying to resolve is updating the driver so I can play World of Warcraft. When I update with the 18.9.1 download from the site, my computer gives me this when I run DXDIAG:

It looks like my BIOS is version 300, and there is an updated version 307 on ASUS's website as pointed out by elstaci. I'll update it and see if it fixes anything.

Sounds like you are trying to install the wrong drivers. Laptops do not update the same way as desktop computers with discrete graphics. One driver is all you install...for the APU, not the discrete graphics. Please read >  Laptop graphics update...How to

Just tried all the different suggestions in the articles. Still same result. I clean installed twice using DDU and it still will not update properly.

How to Fix AMD Radeon Graphics Error 43 on Windows 10 | Driver Talent

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed...

I will mention this again...you must be completely disconnected from the internet while uninstalling the drivers, installing the drivers, running DDU, and rebooting the computer for the last time. Then you can connect back. You do not need to be connected to the internet to install the drivers.

Also,  your anti-virus, personal firewalls, anti-malware must be disabled during the process.

Clean Install AMD Graphics Drivers

These are the step by step actions I just took:

1. Unplugged my ethernet cable

2. Restated the computer in safe mode

3. Turned off AVG

4. Deleted the c:/AMD folder contents

5. Opened Device Manager, Uninstalled the AMD R7 Graphics Driver

6. Opened DDU, ran Clean and Do not Restart

7. Restarted computer with driver signature enforcement turned off

8. Turned AVG off again after rebooting

9. Ran the AMD driver updater exe I downloaded previously from the steps in your first response (file is labeled win10-64bit-radeon-software-adrenalin-edition-18.9.2-sept19)

10. Restarted computer

11. Logged in, opened Device Manager.

Still showing error 43, Windows has stopped the display adapter. Driver details shows it is version 24.20.13017.5001 from September 18, 2018.

Did I miss a step?

Yes. I have tried to resolve the error 43 first, following your tutorial. I can get rid of the error 43, but only by rolling back the driver to a 2016 driver. This doesn't fix my problem, though, as I am ultimately trying to play World of Warcraft. The game requires a more updated driver that 2016.

The troubleshooter does not recognize that the drivers are a problem.

Do you have any Asus controls installed on your laptop? Check Services and Programs and Task Manager. These are programs that can be incompatible with newer drivers.

The only asus software I have on the computer was whatever was factory installed. Checking through services and processes I don't see anything from Asus specifically.

When I Uninstalled and then installed using device manager pointing to C:/AMD it installed the driver, then said "windows encountered and error while installing the drivers, please see the manufacturer website for support".

Uninstall the AMD driver again.

Reinstall the 2016 driver again so that everything is good again. Then try updating the R7 (APU) using the same manual method from the latest AMD Folder without uninstalling the old driver.

If you get the same error as before. Download a previous Driver from the previous link I posted but from 2017 and see if it updates and works correctly.

I rolled back to the 2016 drivers it defaults to, and tried to manually update with Device Manager. It gives me the "The best driver is already installed" message. Downloading the 12/12/2017 driver now to see if it will update with that one.

So I downloaded the drivers from 12/12/17 and 10/24/17. I tried manually installing both with Device Manager, and they both came up as error 43. When I re-install the one the computer came with (10/24/16) Windows does not turn off the service. I'm thinking this is the root of the problem. It wont let me update the drivers period.

The part that is important when I look at DXDIAG.txt is the very last catergory: Diagnostic.

That shows what programs or Windows services or files are having problems. Sometimes it is a good indicator of what is causing problems with your computer.

What error does AMD driver installation give when it tries to install the latest AMD Driver?

I only see two BIOS updates for your Laptop from Asus : X550IU BIOS & FIRMWARE | Laptops | ASUS Global unless I have the wrong Laptop model.

Versions 306 & 307 (5/2018).

Does you laptop have a separate RX 460 GPU card installed besides the APU?

Try installing Previous older AMD Drivers and see which one installs. I would try the 2016 drivers first than 2017 and 2108. Sometimes older laptops doesn't seem to be compatible with the latest AMD Drivers. Just guessing though. 7th Gen FX™ 9830P APU Previous Drivers | AMD

I am not getting any errors while installing the drivers. It is the discrete graphics for the FX-9830 chipset. It is can update the chipset with Device Manager and it gives me a driver from 2016. The issue then is I cannot play World of Warcraft since they require a more recent driver than that.

There is only one driver to install..the one for the APU. That services both the integrated R7 and the discrete RX460. Both must use the same driver.

Do you have any Asus controls installed?

Last resort..if you have the option..is to go into the bios and look for display or graphics and select a fixed graphics instead of a 'switchable'/'dynamic' graphics. Then reboot your laptop. This disables the integrated graphics, and the computer will use only the RX460. This will greatly reduced your battery time.

I noticed you performed all the steps from kingfish link.

Your Discrete GPU (RX 470) works and indicates correctly with the 2016 driver?

Chipset drivers doesn't have anything to do with the Discrete GPU card.

Have you tried manually updating the Rx 470 through Device Manager pointing to the C:\AMD folder?

Open Device Manager and go to "Display Adapters" . Click on the discrete RX 470 and then on "Properties" and then "Update Drivers" then chose "Browse my computer for driver software" and then fill in "Search for drivers in this location" to C:\AMD Folder. Click on "Next" it should install the AMD Driver from C:\AMD Folder.

If you hit update driver "Automatic" in Device Manager it will just install whatever Driver Windows has in its storage first before downloading it from the Internet.

See if this method works unless this was the way you did originally. If you did let us know.

I will try that now.

Make double sure it is the correct Laptop model before updating the BIOS. I don't know why your laptop has version 300 but Asus only shows two versions.

If that is the correct BIOS for your laptop and you have a old BIOS.  By upgrading it should make it more compatible with Windows 10 and its hardware and drivers.

cross you fingers it will solve you problem.

Otherwise, I will stop and let kingfish continue troubleshooting your laptop since he is more experience with Laptops than I am.

sir, i have laptop with similar specification on description, and rx460 as switchable graphic is not detected in neither dxdiag or cpu-z

so after read some replies, the solution is download 2016 driver or downgrade bios? my bios version now already on 308, but cant detect rx460 as switchable graphic

I have same problem with this. Please answer sir.

Try a system scan for corrupt/missing files

Open Run as administrator..enter   sfc /scannow  see if it finds and repairs any corruption.

I would disable the "Instant On" program your laptop came with. Those type of programs take snapshots of various settings and maybe/possibly/could interfere with new installation.

This is the bios I find and definitely install the latest one...X550IU Driver & Tools | Laptops | ASUS Global
