After 7 years I'm putting together a new build for 3D solid modeling, video editing and processing. I just ordered the the above mentioned items and now am looking for some compatible memory. I've settled on Crucial's Ballistix Sport LT Gray 64GB Kit (4 x 16GB) DDR4-2666 UDIMM (BLS4K16G4D26BFSB) DDR4-2666 • PC4-21300 • 16-18-18 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • 1.2V
So here's where I could use some guidance and/or help...
1. The mobo has 8 memory slots that support up to 128GB but according the AMD and the 1950x spec page it supports only 4 channels. Does that mean if I install the above listed ram kit I'm maxed out or am I misinterpreting this?
2. The 1950x also states it will support a Max Memory Speed of 2667 MHz which should be compatible with the memory I've selected since the mobo specs are: DDR4 3200(O.C)/ 3000(O.C)/ 2800(O.C.)/ 2666/ 2400/ 2133. From what I understand if you install higher speed ram the mobo will throttle the speed down to what it can use. So if I don't plan to OC is the 2666 MHz the fastest speed I should use?
3. Assuming question 2 is correct and if I ever wanted to OC in the future would I be OK to order something faster like the 2880 MHz or 3000 MHz memory and expect the mobo to ramp the speed down to 2666 in non-OC mode?
