RX480 was working fine until the WHL 16.7.3 was installed then started getting black and also white screen.
This is a video of the RX480 after the PC suffered a white screen, managed to suspend PC and then restarted which recovered the screen. The GPU is at 100% load and temp is going up steadily. You can see the CPU is not doing anything and most of the apps have been shut down. After this restarted the PC and it went to GPU load of 1% ...so something triggered this 100% load.
This needs to be looked at by AMD tech ASAP !!! BTW I have 16.7.3 WHL driver.
Please roll back your driver and submit a bug report, thank you.
Weirdest of things happened. My PC had been on for 5 hours with no problems. As soon as I clicked your link to submit a bug, firefox opened up....as I was highlighting an entry from a drop box the screen went all orange. Suspended and then back on , GPU shows 0% load. There was no IE loaded. All I had open was firefox, excel and MS Outlook. Temp was 40C.
Now on 16.8.1 , problem seems to be worse than ever. Had many screens going to a solid colour (White Green Black) etc.....going to sleep mode and restart recovers the desktop. GPU Load is at 100% for no reason.
This needs fixing as it is not a working solution.
No hint of this in the release notes as a problem.
I have reported this as a bug but no solution, can't expect to be rebooting your PC in the middle of doing work etc.....come on AMD fix this.
Thanks, we'll investigate. ray_m
Please can you attach (do not copy and paste) a DXDIAG report to your next response?
I would recommend rolling back to Crimson 16.7.2.
I have had this problems with all versions of Crimson since 16.7.1
After several occurances to-day, I have turned off steam and have had no occurance since then, may be just a coincidence.
I do not play any games as such, just tried the Doom demo.
I mainly use my PC for HTPC but all of to-day was spent catching up on email and browsing mainly, GPU was at 0% most of the time.
Thanks for Looking at this issue. Seems to be many posts with same issue all over the net.
No problem at all.
Can you provide any repro steps? For example when you installed the 16.8.1 drivers, what were your next actions? Did you start steam and then play some games? Were you running steam in big picture mode, etc? I just want to make sure we're following the right steps when we try to reproduce this.
If you can attach your DXDIAG report into your next response please, I'll get the ball rolling.
Hi , steam was setup so it was starting automatically when windows started. I have changed that since and also exited the app, no re-occurance as yet.
I will let you know when it happens again.... I am updating windows later on to-day.
Will try and not use steam.
When I had rolled back to 16.7.1 I went for a few days without a problem. This morning I had a few excel spreadsheets open when I had the problem as well as firefox and IE...oh yes spotify was playing some tunes.
my dxdiag attached
Did you have any specific steam features running, for example big picture mode, streaming, etc?
When I tried the DOOM demo I was in 1920 by 1024 if I remember correctly.
I was playing using my monitor and not doing any streaming. I did know about those features before now when I looked them up.
I am now on the Windows10 latest update if that helps.
Just got another occurance. This time this happened whilst I was away from the PC. I had a couple of spreadsheets open and firefox was also open. I have posted a video for you to look at. You can see the GPU load at 100%. I show all the items in task manager and servies maybe that will help.
Let me know if you need more info.
Thanks for the video.
Did you have Steam running in the background when you took that video? If so, please can you try disabling the Steam overlay.
Can you also try running a virus scan, just to make sure that there is not any malware on your system?
No mate steam was disabled and not in the startup list any more. No steam is not the problem.
I had setup steam not to load when windows started.
Also removed it from Task Manager startup list. Steam definetly not loaded at all.
Okay cool. One more suggestion, can you kill the Raptr/PlaysTV services and retest the issue again? Thanks.
I have now uninstalled raptr and playtv is also gone.
I removed playtv this morning ...been ok since then.
Keep me updated if it comes back after removing those apps.
By the way I have a different issue with H264 decoding and HW acc enabled (using LAV filter 0.6.81). H265 UHD HW Acc works fine but HD and SD produces the effects above.
The app used is DVBviewer.
The problems have been reported by others via these links.

Hi, just to confirm I have the exact same issues, random black or white/blue screens, corrupt DVXA playback using LAV filters but i'm also gettign random BSOD with:
Sandy bridge I5 2400 PCI Express 2.0 Gigabyte Z68 mainboard.
I've tried every driver version available and rebuilt my PC !!! TWICE !! before I found these threads, not a happy man.
We are both using PCI Express 2.0, could this be the issue, outdated mainboards?
which is the best driver use at the moment, does rolling back to any of them stop the black/white screen issue, its infuritating.
I had issue with all version of 16.x.x but since I remove raptr and playtv have run for 1.5 days with no problem.....also steam has been disabled.
did that too, had just the one black screen tonight, on latest drive with steam disabled. I assume when you say everythng is ok you dont mean DVXA is working as i've had to turn it off on mine or a get massive video corruption.
Yes no black or any colour screens since yesterday lunchtime ......as for DXVA I don't have it turned on for H264 on the LAV decoder...not sure if it is improves anything as the CPU can handle that amount of data with ease for me. However is it definetly a problem which needs fixing. Now is that a LAV decoder problem or an AMD driver issue ?
Just an update to let you know I had another occurence of a black screen.
The video shows all the processes left running. In this case the GPU did not go to 100%. PC was put to sleep and then brought out of sleep mode. In this case there was no browsers loaded at all and no excel or Outlook.
I have also done a video showing H264 problem when turning on HW Acceleration using LAV filter 0.68.1
UHD works fine but H264 breaks up.
