Plz help!!! error: clcreatecontextfromtype<CL_DEVICE_TYPE_GPU> FAILED <-1>

Hi all,

Good day. Its been 3 weeks I've bought HP Probook 4540s which comes with a AMD Radeon 7650M GPU. The factory settings is windows 8, but I didnt like it & installed Win 7 professional 64 bit.

My questions are:

1. While Win 8 was installed, I could go to device manager & in the properties, could see it was dedicated. Now, in Win 7, no such line shows. How can I know it is being used/if the memory dedicated or not?

2. Just after starting the laptop, below image shows. Does it mean my GPU is not working properly? What does this msg mean & what action should I take?

Have already read the FAQs on this CL device type error but failed to understand much. My games skips frames & I'm concerned wheather the GPU is actually being used or not.

Plz help me out! Thanks in advance guys.

Its purely installation problem... Check whether you missed something while configuring during installation. because you will get this error only when the application is failied to locate the specified hardware only. I will suggest you to reinstall and check it one more time

What GPU do you have in your laptop? And can you run clinfo after installing the catalyst driver. You may try to install latest catalyst available from AMD at http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_win8-64.aspx

Dear Himanshu,

its AMD Radeon HD 7650M. We, at first, I also thought that it is a driver installation prob. I downloaded the driver from AMD. After installing, in device manager> Display adapter, it showed AMD 7500/7600 series. I wasn't sure wheather the GPU is working or not coz it wasnt providing the performance it should (Frame skipping, becoming slow & all). Then I uninstalled & installed the one I downloaded from HP support. My system crashed & I had to set up Windows again.

After the new setup, didnt take any risk & installed the HP one straight. But then this msg is showing every time I start my laptop.

Any clue?

From browsing it seems your laptop has a Intel HD graphics + AMD discrete card. Do you also have Intel graphics driver installed? In such a configuration, i would advice to ask support from HP itself. One suggestion I have is to try to uninstall Intel driver, and only install AMD driver. Also there is a cleanup utility to remove the old AMD driver http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/catalyst-uninstall-utility.aspx

Also as i understand, "AMD Accelerated Video Transcoding" is a multimedia application that helps in video transcoding using all resources available. From reading it seems, AVT shows up a cmd line window, but it is not expected to give that error. And you can consider removing the application if you do not need it.
