device0 is a 5850, device1 is a 5830, using a fresh installl of Ubuntu 12.04, driver 12.10 and sdk 2.7.
As you can see above, line 36 (first device) and line 113 (second device) are the same:
Max clock frequency: 870Mhz
But according to "aticonfig --adapter=all --odgt --odgc", for the second device it should be 1000Mhz. When i'm assigning work to device1, it is forwarded to device0 and in case device0 is already in use, the processes are cannibalizing each other. No error message. Tried this http://devgurus.amd.com/thread/159566 which made the GPUs available through SSH, but did not solve the problem. The same configuration worked fine with Ubuntu 10.04. For SSH-GPU-access i didn't even have to make the changes proposed in http://devgurus.amd.com/thread/159566 .
Is it an issue of driver, sdk or Ubuntu or have i done s.th. wrong?
Can you provide example code? or explain how you are making your tests?
I see that you are trying to mine bitcoins I found out that with 58xx series cards, at least the reference cards, the cgminer program works much better. You can configure the speeds and even voltages (this might or not work I guess) in the configuration file also and it is better than trying to set them using aticonfig, cgminer is able to auto control the fan speed.
Solution is to connect a secondary screen (can be switched off) to the secondary card. I had to buy a DVI-VGA-adapter in order to connect my analog secondary screen.
Thanks for the cgminer hint. When i have some time, i will try it. By the way, here are my MHash/sec with phoenix miner 1.6 (other than 1.6 occasionaly hangs), HD5850, 870MHz GPU clock, 300MHz RAM clock:
Ubuntu 10.04LTS, Driver 11.6, SDK 2.1, ~356MHash/sec
Ubuntu 12.04LTS, Driver 12.10, SDK 2.7, ~340MHash/sec
Upgrade 10.4LTS to 12.04LTS:
======================
I did not have to connect a secondary screen to use a secondary card on 10.04.
aticonfig GPU-load of secondary card drops from ~99% to ~80%!
WLAN driver now out of the box (in 10.04 had to be built manually), but regularly looses connection after several days!
uptime lists a load average of ~2, compared to ~0,38 on 10.4 when phoenix mining on two cards!! (1090T CPU)
Less MHash/sec now!
Bottom line: not worth the upgrade, at least for me.
Last week i had some driver problems with 12.10 from one day to the other. The first time ever i had driver problems with ATI-drivers. Installation of latest 12.11Beta removed the driver problems, but i was not far away from going back to 10.04. Though i like the new user interface, the expense in terms of user interface ressource usage seems quite high.
