Intermittent Kernel Failure OpenCL

Moderator,

I am not sure if this is the proper place to post this question, please advise if I have mis-posted or please move this to the proper area.

I am working with developers on the Blender Project to determine why Blender is causing my laptop to freeze or lapse into the Black Screen of Death. Discussion has led to questions about instances of OpenCL on my machine.

My laptop is a HP Envy17 3D and sports an integrated ATI Mobility Radeon (HD) 5850 chip/video interface.

Current Catalyst Driver version loaded

Drivers Version: 8.820.5.1000 - Catalyst 12.1 (3-31-2011)

ATI Catalyst Version String: 12.1

ATI Catalyst Release Version String: 8.82.5.1-110331a-120520C-HP

Blender (both 32 and 64bit version) crashes or freezes when I access the user preference System Menu.

We have walked through various troubleshooting criteria and ensure I had the most recent builds of Blender and that my graphics drivers were up-to-date and have determined that it may be an OpenCL problem.

I've downloaded a program call GPU_Cap Viewer and ran through the tests.

I have determined that there 2 types of OpenCL running.

1. Juniper (GPU) and 2. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73GHz  (CPU)

When I run the 4 OpenCL test/demos available in GPU_Cap I get intermittent failures. I am wondering if there may be a bug in the AMD OpenCL Drivers for the machine.

Error that I receive when the test fail is

CL kernel Compile

Error:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\loacal\temp\OCL4EB8.tmp.cl(264):

warning

variable "cs"

was set but never used

float cs =

0.0f

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\loacal\temp\OCL4EB8.tmp.cl(326):

warning

variable "cs"

was set but never used

float cs =

0.0f

calcCompile failedError: Creating kernel surface_deformer_with_check

failed!

This is an intermittent failure and only happen some of the times I run the test.

Here are the listings for the OpenCL listings reported by GPU_Cap,

Number of CL Platforms: 1: AMD Accelerated

Parallel Processing

Number of CL devices: 2

1. Juniper

Type

GPU

500MHz

Ver. OpenCL 1.1 AMD-APP (851.4)

Driver: CAL 1.4.1016

(VM)

2. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73GHz

Type: CPU

Compute

Units: 8

Clock: 1729MHz

Ver: OpenCL 1.1 AMD-APP (851.4)

Driver: 2.0

No Active 3D Apps

As it is now 2 programs that have caused an OpenCL failure, it leads me to believe there must be something wrong either with the CL Drivers or the physical card/chip itself.

Can someone help with this?

Thanks

This appears to be fixed in release of the new Catalyst driver set ver 12.2

OpenCL Driver CAL 1.4.1703 (VM) ver 1.1 AMD-APP (898.1) released Mar 7, 2012. I am not experienceing the errors running the demos in GPU Cap Viewer (new ver 1.15.1) and I can now access the User Preference Sytems menu in Blender.
