Hello, Red Team!

Posted by gfroniewski Feb 19, 2019

Hey everyone,

My name’s Gary, and I’m your newest AMD and Red Team Community Manager! I’ve already had the chance to talk to a few of you, and I’m excited to get to know even more.

About me:

It might come as no surprise to y’all that I mainly spend my free time playing video games, but I also love to hike, explore new restaurants and bars all over Austin, and also go see live music as much as possible. I graduated from UT with a communications degree with the idea that I would work in social media (preferably in video games), so here I am. :)

Gaming:

I’ve been gaming for as long as I can remember, going back to NES when I was a wee lad. I play most of the major releases with particular interest in online shooters and action RPGs. When a hot, new single player title isn’t fresh off the presses, you can find me playing everything from Apex Legends and Blackout to Overwatch and Rainbow Six: Siege.

Industry work:

This is my first job in the games industry, but I’ve been working in social media for nearly half a decade now. I started off as a community manager serving companies of all kinds – everything from restaurants, bars, and BNBs to dentists, mechanics, and comic shops – and I’m both excited and hugely proud to now be working with AMD. It’s a dream of mine to infuse my passion with my profession, and I feel lucky to get the opportunity to accomplish that here.

Contact me:

You can find me on the Red Team Discord as gary_games. Feel free to reach out to me if you want to say hi or discuss anything AMD related! You can also find me on Twitter @gary_froniewski if you want to talk about anything else, but it is a personal account that doesn’t represent AMD in any way, so please be aware of that when you visit.

*Bonus picture of my derpy cat, Albus, included*

Happy (almost) New Year, Red Team!

From celebrating Ryzen’s one-year anniversary and launching a refreshed Red Team program, to community meet ups at PAX, TwitchCon and more, it’s been a packed and amazing year for AMD and our community. To celebrate, we’re counting down the five best moments of 2018.

#5: Community Meet Ups!

PAX, E3, CNE Gaming Garage and more, we were there and so were you—loud and proud. This year we put our stamp on gaming conventions all over the world. You showed us how pumped you were to get hands on experience with AMD products at Tokyo Game Show, China Joy, DreamHack and TwitchCon. While there, we hosted memorable Red Team meet ups with swag, giveaways, photobooths and social media contests: and we’re looking forward too many more in 2019!

#4: 12 Days of Streaming

To show our appreciation to our passionate community we kicked off a special event. Just in time for the holidays, we launched a special 12 Days of Streaming Twitch event. Alongside our special guests hosts NaomiKyle, iAmLucyMae, PancakePowTV and Kiings, we streamed for 12 days straight playing your favorite games, chatting about our products and giving away a few, too! We gave away processors, graphics cards, laptops and desktops to 12 lucky winners to enjoy!

#3: The new AMD Red Team

The AMD community leveled up in June when we rolled out new updates to the Red Team. We’ve expanded the Red Team banner to include 4 new teams to spotlight all of your skills, interests, and excitement for everything AMD. These new teams include: Streamers, Reviewers, Students, and the Street Team.

Whether you’re a fan-favorite streaming personality or a PC hardware guru, we’d love to have you play an integral role in our community in 2019 and beyond. If you bleed AMD Red and want to learn more about the Red Team programs, watch our community video and consider applying here.

#2: VLANs on VLANs on Super VLANs

We can’t complete this year’s highlights without remembering the VLANs we hosted in 2018. This year we held 3 VLANs with you all: the Superfan VLAN, the 2nd Gen Ryzen VLAN, and the AMD VLAN featuring MicroCenter. One of our favorites was the 12-Hour Superfan VLAN where so many of you showed up, gamed hard, and won Ryzen and Radeon powered PCs.

Hosting VLANs gives us the chance to introduce new faces and personalities to the stream, try out new games, and interact with the Red Team community. And then we throw in tons of prizes for fun!

#1: Ryzen’s 1st Birthday

And number one on the list? It’s only fitting that celebrating the one-year anniversary of Ryzen tops our year in review. The outpouring of support, excitement, and passion you showed with Ryzen coming into the market was nothing short of exceptional! We went big with Ryzen’s Birthday. Between VLANs, giveaways, an epic event at SXSW, and of course – Ryzen birthday cupcakes, this was the cherry on top of a great 2018 with our community.

Honorable Mention

Of course, when we talk about all the exciting community activities we took part in over 2018, we can’t forget about all the giveaways. Between VLANs, contests, and events, we created a ton of opportunities to win some awesome AMD hardware. Over the entire year, we gave away over $62K worth of prizes! Be sure to follow all our social channels in 2019 for more chances to win.

Thanks to each and every one of you for making 2018 a great year for AMD. We’re looking forward to what’s next in 2019, and we couldn’t do it without our devoted Red Team community. Here’s to a fantastic New Year together!

To keep up with what’s going on in the Red Team community in 2019, follow us Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Twitch!

Each day we’ll be focusing on a different AMD product while playing games with all of you. We’ll be showing off Ryzen CPUs, Radeon GPUs, and AMD-powered laptops and desktops. Best of all, we’re in the gift-giving mood, so at the end of each stream we’ll give that day’s featured product away! See the schedule below for each day’s prize.

AMD #RyzenAND Sweepstakes

Posted by thepancake Employee Nov 9, 2018

Day 1 - Contest Announcement.gif

Would you pay a lot more for a pizza that’s only a little bigger? We certainly hope not. So why would you overpay for your CPU?

Unlike the other guys, we want to make sure you get the absolute best price per performance possible; and with Ryzen, you get incredible, award winning performance that’s readily available. To show how dedicated we are to making sure you enjoy that price to performance savings, we’re giving you a chance to win a Ryzen prize pack of your choice!

From Nov 9 through Nov 17, we want you to tell us what you’d buy using the money saved going with Ryzen over the competition. A new motherboard? Faster RAM? Extra money to enjoy this holiday season? Don’t just get a CPU. Get Ryzen AND more!

We’ll pick one winner each day from everyone who tweets to @AMDRyzen with hashtags #RyzenAND and #SweepstakesEntry. Each winner will receive a Ryzen 7 2700X AND their choice* from a long list of prize options. See the full contest rules for complete details.

AMD Red Team Update

Posted by erin.maiorino Employee Jun 21, 2018

Welcome to the new and improved AMD Red Team!

AMD Red Team is a community for AMD product owners and fans of the brand. It’s a community to collaborate with, to show off your expertise, and most importantly, to make new friends! Whether you’re into exceptional PC builds, 3D design, or competitive gaming, AMD has the products to help you out and we want to keep you connected with others like you.

Looking to join? Head on over to the AMD Red Team newsletter form to sign up onto the team! Keep connected with the rest of the crew on our community forums, on the AMD Red Team Discord server, or with #AMDRedTeam on Twitter. After joining, you can show off your Red Team love with wallpapers from our Digital Fan Kit or just by strutting your stuff in one of our Red Team t-shirts you can get from our community meetups.

As for the new and improved part, we’re adding four new teams under the Red Team banner to provide spotlights to all of your skills, interests, and excitement for everything AMD. These teams are exciting opportunities for those who really want to get involved with AMD and Red Team with their own skills and excitement:

The AMD Red Team Streamers

Are you a fan-favorite streaming personality? Are you just as much of a competitive pro as you are PC hardware guru? The new Red Team Streamers group is for you! The Red Team Streamers will have the chance to stream on the official AMD Twitch channel and be a part of the official streaming schedule. Red Team Streamers will also have the opportunity to power their own channel with AMD equipment!

We’re aiming to have strong, ongoing relationships with the Red Team Streamers. Having a million subscribers is not necessary to join the team, but a certain level of professionalism and consistency in content quality will be important for those of you looking to join.

The AMD Red Team Reviewers

Do you make beautiful unboxing videos? Are you a PC build-log superstar? Do you have an awesome benchmarking setup and enjoy showing off some of the coolest data on this side of the web? The Red Team Reviewers will be made up of talented, excited, and knowledgeable people to review and share AMD products to their audiences.

Red Team Reviewers will create content for video platforms like YouTube and Vimeo as well as blog formats that could make it onto the official Red Team blog! To help make sure you’re only covering what you’re interested in covering, being a Red Team Reviewer is a per-product, per-review basis. This means that new reviews will need new applications, whether you’ve been a Red Team Reviewer before or not. Per-review applications will also help us keep all the details in order, so we can make sure that you’re getting the support you need for a successful review.

The AMD Red Team Street Team

Our Street Team may feel a bit more familiar. The Street Team is made up of the most involved and enthusiastic of the Red Team community. This team keeps involved with all of the Red Team events: our official VLANs, getting together at local outings, and meeting with AMD at our favorite trade shows. Members of the Street Team will be helping out with these events and promoting what AMD is up to via their own social channels and community efforts. This team will be comprised of the names you recognize, respect, and rely on to keep up to date with the biggest things going on with AMD and the Red Team!

Similar to the Red Team Reviewers, the Street Team will be on a per-event basis. This means that if you’re only available to join us at a convention near your home or if you’re only into getting the VLANs together, you won’t feel pressured into being on every single thing that’s going on if you don’t want to be.

The AMD Red Team Students

For the unique experiences found on college and university campuses worldwide, we’re fleshing out Red Team Students to give student communities their own spotlight. Are you studying 3D design and can’t get enough of our professional hardware? Do you have a knack for technical writing and love to show off the fine details of the tech world? Do you have a killer case mod with AMD hardware to show off at your gaming club’s LAN parties? We want to be a part of your passion that’s taking you through the rigors of higher education!

AMD Red Team Students will be an empowered student ambassador program. This team is passionate about how AMD’s products and brand fit into their work and play. The goal is to reach new students, excite others about AMD products, and manage the brand on a collegiate level. Whether it’s YouTube videos or meetups, we want you to do what gets your campus and classmates excited for AMD and the Red Team!

If any of the new teams sound like they might be for you, head over to the main Red Team Page and apply!

For our Red Team veterans: Thank you for being a part of the growing AMD community. Growth often means change, and we’re excited for these updates coming to the Red Team community taking place over the next few months. We believe these changes will make for a stronger Red Team and AMD community as a whole!

We’ve officially closed all applications for Red Team Plus. Red Team Plus has been an important and valued part of AMD and we’re excited to transform the program to new, focused teams that better highlight your individual skills and interests. Red Team Plus members have been transitioned into a new Alum group specifically for the previous members of RTP. We will continue to collaborate with Red Team Alum on supporting the new expanded community.

We’re excited to continue to make the Red Team an even more amazing community than it already is. By introducing the new teams, we're aiming to strengthen community involvement and better highlight the passions and skills of those who bleed Red!

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out in our AMD Red Team Community Forum if you have any questions or concerns about these upcoming changes.

Hello Red Team!

I’m Sean “The Pancake” Clanton, and I’m a new AMD and Red Team Community Manager!

About me:

I play video games, disc golf, have worked for a few different game studios, watch a lot of anime and sci-fi, read a great deal of fantasy novels, and love horror movies. I’m a bit of a metalhead and have been known to be found in a mosh pit, but I’m also a total geek and love all things Star Wars, Star Trek, LotR, Doctor Who, etc., I’ve also been told I have waaaay too many Funko figures (is that even possible?). Oh, and in my spare time I like to tinker with making craft beer.

Gaming:

I’ve been a video game junkie for most of my life. Saved up all my birthday money when I was 6 to buy my first console, and been gaming ever since. I mostly play MMORPGs and ARPGs, but will give anything a go. I’ve been a PC gamer since Ultima Online and was an original beta tester for WoW. I now mostly play Final Fantasy XIV and Diablo 3, and I’m doing my best to wait for Monster Hunter to release on PC. I’ve been building PCs since vanilla WoW, and have hosted quite a few Diablo 2 and Quake LAN parties back in the day.

Industry work:

I’ve worked in the PC/Gaming industry for quite some time. After an initial stint in the marketing agency world working for the likes of Hyatt and Hilton Hotels, I transitioned over to video games. I earned my first gaming stripes at Red 5 Studios leading all the social efforts for Firefall from closed beta all the way to its unfortunate demise. After that, I moved over to Carbine Studios handling social for WildStar where I managed all social media operations, as well as a lot of behind-the-scenes work with livestreamers and YouTubers. Most recently, I was the social media manger for NCSOFT working on Blade & Soul, Aion, Lineage 2, and Master X Master (RIP). I’ve handled everything from livestreams, to customer care, to social media operations, to event management.

Contact me:

You can always find me on the Red Team Discord as ThePancake. Feel free to reach out to me anytime for your AMD-related needs or if you just want to send me pics of your doggos. You can also find me on Twitter a lot, but don’t expect much AMD talk there. It’s for my personal amusement and doesn’t represent AMD in any way, so please respect that if you decide to give me a follow.

That’s me, and I’m excited to get to know all of you!

Sean “The Pancake” Clanton

PS: I just got a dog, so here’s an obligatory photo.

Today, courtesy of AMD sending me both an RX 570 to test with and a Ryzen 5 1500X based system, I will be looking at the performance of the RX 570 and how to overclock it.

The system I’m testing on is listed below:

CPU: Ryzen 5 1500X

CPU Cooler: AMD Wraith Max

Motherboard: Gigabyte B350 Gaming 3

GPU:  Aorus RX 570

RAM: 32 GB G.Skill DDR4 @ 2400 Mhz

HDD: 2 TB Seagate

Case: Cybertron PC case

PSU: 650 Watt Cybertron PSU (Gold rated)

Some photos of the GPU, which is quite the beast of a card being a well designed GPU. The front of the Aorus RX 570 has a dual fan design with a black and orange shroud, and you can see the fairly beefy heatpipes and aluminum as well:

On the backside of the GPU, there is a backplate and a copper GPU heatsink as well.

awdasd.jpg

When installed, the GPU has a RGB panel on it that can be controlled through Aorus software tools, and it can be seen here in all it's RGB glory!

First things first when it comes to overclocking: you will need the latest drivers and software for your system. In my case that is the Radeon 17.4.4 drivers, from the AMD website- but as new drivers come out this will vary, and you can find the latest drivers on the AMD website. You may want to install custom software to overclock with your GPU, but the built in Radeon Wattman should do well for most users, and is what I will be using in this guide. Some other options include MSI Afterburner, Aorus Graphics Engine, and Sapphire TriXX to name a few. The other thing you will need is a good GPU stress test, I tend to use GPUPI which is a benchmark, but if you set it to the 100B test it will crank the GPU to 100% for a number of hours which is a good indication if you have a stable overclock or not. Another great tool is Furmark, although sometimes it has issues it still is a good way to test if you are running to high of an overclock for the GPU cooler to handle.

Once you have drivers installed you should run games and benchmarks at stock settings to see how the card performs, and if you want to overclock at all if the performance is good enough for what you want to play games at. I will do this with a variety of games and benchmarks, starting with 3dmark Firestrike.

3drmarkfirestock.png

Next up is Metro Last Light Redux. The settings are below:

sdfsdffffffffffffffffffffffffffff.png

And the results from 3 runs are an average of 44.82 FPS at max settings at 1080P, as you can see below.

metrollstock1.png

The next game I’ll be testing is Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, and the settings I used are below:

20170629000925_1.jpg

20170629000935_1.jpg

After running the benchmark three times, the average FPS with the above settings was 91.266 FPS.

The next game I’ll test to see the stock performance of is Tomb Raider 2013, which is an incredibly GPU bound game. The settings I used for testing are below:

asfasdfsdfsdf.png

An average of three runs of the benchmark in game gave a result of 146.67, which is buttery smooth at 1080P. Example of one of the results below:

20170629002001_1.jpg

Now that the stock performance has been tested, time to get ready to overclock. When using Radeon Wattman, you simply need to pull up the Radeon Settings by right clicking on the desktop or clicking on it from the icons in windows. From  there you will need to go to the “Gaming” tab in the settings as seen below:

gamingtab.png

And then click on the Global Settings tab, which will bring you to this tab.

globalset.png

Click over onto the Global Wattman tab and you will be in Radeon Wattman, the built in overclocking tool. You can see all kind of information here, like clock speeds, fan settings, RPM, and etcetera. For an RX 570, this is about what is should look like by default, and there are some important settings to take note of.

First off, the page with the green bars and power states are typically for more advanced users who want to fine tune how fast the GPU is at different states. For example, when idling, (Performance State 0) typically the GPU will sit at 300 mhz. Or when watching Youtube or netflix, it will kick up to 600 mhz..

For the purposes of this article, I’ll just be tuning the last two power states- the full load and Boost settings as they will impact gaming the most. I also switched the setting to show the speed in Mhz instead of percentages, so it is easier to read.

dasdasdddddddddddd.png

The next part of Wattman is the memory overclocking page, which is similar to the GPU speed one in the performance states graph. However it only has one as memory runs at the same speed all the time. This part of Wattman also shows the fan and power limit settings, which are useful for control the temperature and the amount of power the GPU can use (respectively). The fan settings are pretty straightforward, and you can find ones that work for you or you can let Wattman pick the fan speed automatically- though that may not work as well for keeping temps down. The power limit I will go into more later in the article.

asdasjdkljashdlkjhh.png

To begin overclocking, just increase the frequency of the GPU core by small amounts, like 25mhz increments, and then test to see if GPUPI, Furmark, or the games you like are stable with it. If the GPU crashes in the stress tests, or gets too hot than you have found the limit of the GPU. The max temperature you usually want an RX series card is around 95 Celsius, and they can safely run to about 90C without issues. If you go higher than that, you can risk damage to the GPU.

But, if you have thermal head room- like 5 or 10 degrees Celsius extra (or more) you can make the power limit higher without any problems. This setting will automatically give, for example, up to 10% more power to the GPU if you set it to +10%. The max setting is +50% and I typically will run somewhere between +25% and +50% as long as temps are good on RX series cards.

Once you have increased the power limit from the default settings, you'l need to test the stress tests again to see if the added power has brought stability. If it has, you can keep adding the small frequency bumps until the card isn't stable again- and then add more power limit again. Typically you will reach a barrier of either stability of temperature before too long, but a 5-15% overclock on the GPU is about normal for most RX 570s.

On to my testing of the Aorus RX 570, which did pretty fairly by achieving a 1405 Mhz overclock on the GPU core, while staying at a max of 73C with a power limit of +50%. Any higher and the GPU would not be very stable through runs of Metro Last Light and GPUPI. That is about a 10% overclock over the stock 1244 Mhz boost clock (or about a 6% overclock over the boost clok of the Aorus card, which has a boost speed of 1330 Mhz), which isn't bad at all and it stayed fairly quiet as well. For those interested the settings I used are pictured below.

hsgfdkjshdgf.png

asdkjajshdgh.png

Now for the results of the overclocks on performance, starting with 3DMark Firestrike.

3dmarkoced.png

In Firestrike, the around 6-10% boost from the stock speed of the Aorus RX 570 amounted to a 5% overall improvement, which is a very decent amount. Not quite linear, but close to it.

Next up is Metro Last Light Redux and the overclocked system got an average FPS of 47 FPS, vs the 44.82 FPS of stock which amounts to about a 5% performance increase as well.

safdsfdffffffffff.png

Next up is Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, which when the RX 570 is overclocked, got an average of 95.71 FPS over three runs of the benchmark. This compared to the stock performance of 91.266 there is about another 5% speed increase, which is quite a decent improvement.

Last but not least, Tomb Raider 2013 at 1080P ultra got an average of 156 FPS when the RX 570 is overclocked, vs the 146.67 FPS when stock which is a 6.3% increase. This is a more linear increase in speed, as Tomb Raider 2013 is a very GPU dependent game so it sees a greater increase from overclocking.

In conclusion, I hope this guide has helped you figure out the basics of how to overclock using Radeon Wattman, and how to test GPU overclocking on the RX 570 GPUs in general! If you have any thoughts, questions, comments let me know in the comments I’m more than happy to help. If you would like me to test other games or go more into depth on anything let me know as well, i can do that too!

Also special thanks to AMD for the 1500X and motherboard and Aorus for the RX 570 to test and review.

01 NZXT_MANTA_BOX.jpg

With AMD’s Ryzen launch, I’ve started gathering parts for my new PC. I’m really looking forward to this build, as I’m anxiously awaiting mITX boards for AM4 processors. With that in mind, I purchased a NZXT Manta mITX case. There are a few reasons for choosing this particular case, not the least is that NZXT has a history of building quality enclosures that aren't just a square box. I tend to like cases that standout instead of trying to blend in. Another is the support for dual 280 radiators, and a reservoir, as this will be my first custom loop build. No, it’s not the smallest ITX case out there, and I’m fine with that. To me it’s the right size for a complete gaming rig, that even with all the bells and whistles, still has a smaller footprint. Let’s take a look.

02 NZXT_MANTA_Front.jpg

NZXT calls the Manta a “High-performance small form factor mini-ITX case.”

  • Fully filtered, easy-to-remove intake
  • Integrated PSU shroud for a beautifully clean build
  • Kraken X61-ready with push/pull capabilities
  • Dual 280mm liquid cooling support
  • Double the cable management space
  • Elegant, curved steel paneling and window
  • New manufacturing technology offers unparalleled build quality

Here are the specs from their website:

03 NZXT_MANTA_WINDOWED SIDE.jpg

The large side panel window gives an unfettered view of the interior. More on that in a bit, but first let’s take a trip around the outside.

04 NZXT_MANTA_Right Side.jpg

As you can see, all the outer panels are curved, and I like the contrast of the matte white paint with black accents. The side panels stand out from the sides a bit giving the chassis room to take air in, and exhaust it.

05 NZXT_MANTA_Back.jpg

Around the back there is additional venting in the top panel, the opening for the motherboard I/O ports, 2 expansion slots, and the opening for an ATX PSU. The side panels are held on with captive thumb screws.

06 NZXT_MANTA_Top.jpg

Up top there is the power button, 2 USB 3.0 ports, and the headphone and mic inputs along with the power LED.

07 NZXT_MANTA_Inside.jpg

With the side removed, we can get a better look at the inside. The Manta comes with 3 120mm fans preinstalled – 2 in the front, and 1 in the rear. There is also 2 2.5” drive mounts on the right side. There are plenty of cutouts in the motherboard tray to make for a clean build, and the motherboard standoffs are preinstalled.

08 NZXT_MANTA_Rear 3 Quarter.jpg

Next to the 2.5” mounts is an area that will allow for the routing of cables while keeping them hidden. It is also fairly deep to help keep the 24 pin snake under control.

09 NZXT_MANTA_Inside Bottom.jpg

The vented PSU shroud covers most of the bottom, and includes an opening for your GPU cables, stopping short of the front to allow for the installation of a radiator.

10 NZXT_MANTA_Inside Top.jpg

Up top there is the mounting point for a second 280 rad, or 2 140mm fans.

11 NZXT_MANTA_Rear Open.jpg

With the right side panel removed, we get a look at what the Manta has available for cable management. There are numerous cable tie down points, and the curve of the panel further increases the space available. As you can see the bottom portion is wide open which will make cable routing a snap.

12 NZXT_MANTA_Hdd Mount PSU Area.jpg

A closer look at the bottom shows the removable filter for the PSU, and the mounting point for a 3.5” storage drive.

13 NZXT_MANTA_Fan Hub.jpg

Also on the back there is a fan hub with support for up to 8 fans.

14 NZXT_MANTA_Front Filter.jpg

With the front cover removed, we can see the front filter, which is easily removable.

15 NZXT_MANTA_Filter Removed.jpg

Here we see the 2 preinstalled 120mm fans, and the mounting points for 140mm fans and/or radiators. The top and front covers come off, and are easy to replace.

16 NZXT_MANTA_Bottom.jpg

On the bottom there are 2 large U-shaped feet that provide a good deal of clearance allowing the PSU to breathe freely, and 4 rubber strips to keep the case in place on your desk.

03 NZXT_MANTA_WINDOWED SIDE.jpg

Well there’s a look at my new PC’s home. I hope you enjoyed it, and stick around, as I will be taking a look at the other components that will make up the build, and of course the build itself. For now, the Manta will get boxed back up, and shipped off to my good friend and fellow RTP member Ian aka @torn_tv. He will be repainting the interior all white, and applying some vinyl decals for me.
