I’m pleased to share another post of our “Shared Values” blog series. I recently spoke about the concept of shared values, which is the idea that business and community success do not have to be separate ideals, but instead play a role supporting each other. In this post, I’ll highlight some of the shared value priorities of AMD in Texas, a strategic site in our global operations.


AMD established a campus in Texas more than 35 years ago, and today our Austin location represents the company’s largest operations and R&D site in the United States. Texas is home to approximately 1,400 AMD employees including CEO and President Dr. Lisa Su. Fortune has named Dr. Su one of the 50 World's Greatest Leaders in 2017.


The Austin area is often nicknamed "Silicon Hills" because of the concentration of semiconductor design companies, including AMD.  We embrace the opportunities and responsibilities that come with this recognition, and I would like to highlight three areas of shared values.


Economic Prosperity

The economy in which our employees and their families work and live is a pathway to opportunity and prosperity.  In the State of Texas, AMD primarily hires for jobs in engineering, technical fields, and professional support roles.  And 97 percent of these jobs exceed the average wage for the State of Texas, as well as its Capital Region, which includes the Austin area.1


Innovation is the lifeblood of a strong economy, and AMD in Texas is a creative powerhouse. We hold more than 4,700 U.S. intellectual property patents with more than 1,500 of them from one or more Texas inventors. In 2016, the company received the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce’s award for “Innovative Practices & Technology.”


And, to help promote the state’s retention and attraction of continued investment, AMD has signed the Texas Competes pledge for a diverse and inclusive workplace and community. AMD was also recognized by the Texas Diversity Council with their Corporate DiversityFIRST Award for the company commitment to an inclusive work environment.


Looking to the state’s future economic well-being, and AMD’s own workforce, we’re mindful that higher and K-12 education are irreplaceable building blocks.  Among other activities, at the Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology at Rice University, and at the University of North Texas, we’ve provided technical tutorials and seminars and collaborated with professors and graduate students to conduct research on memory technology.  We've also worked with the Houston school district in their one-to-one computing program, which gives every teacher and student their own laptop or tablet, providing access to vital learning applications.


Environmental Sustainability

As part of our focus on sustainability, our Austin site achieved “gold” certification from the LEED green building rating system for new construction in 2009. At that time, it was the largest gold certified LEED commercial building in the State of Texas, and included the largest known commercial rainwater collection system in the world.


Each year since, AMD has sourced renewable wind energy to cover 100 percent of our electricity use at our Austin site campus, and has been listed in the US Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partners Program. AMD is also proud to be a Platinum member in the City of Austin’s Green Business Leader’s Program.


Many of our employees contribute as well, by participating in our company-sponsored home solar installation discount program, and using sustainable commuter benefits. Our Austin operation is a reflection of our corporate culture that values sustainability at multiple levels of our business.


Vibrant Neighborhoods

AMD is passionate about the neighborhoods in which our employees live and work.  We value being an engaged partner with Central Texas charitable organizations, lending our workforce’s time and talents to the community. From 2013 to 2015, AMD financially contributed to 21 Texas-based non-profit organizations and schools. During this same period, local AMD employees volunteered over 7,600 hours in company-sponsored events.


Our community partnerships might be best exemplified by our longstanding commitment to Meals on Wheels and More.  For more than twenty-two years, AMD has provided financial support and our employees have donated their time to deliver meals to home-bound clients saving the organization many thousands of dollars in staffing costs. By investing in our communities, we’re able to build a stronger relationship with them – one that benefits both of us.


We look forward to a continued, strong presence in the State of Texas, anchored in part by the values we appreciate and share with our local stakeholders.

Today we are proud to announce that AMD has received a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index (CEI), making it a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality.” The CEI is a benchmarking tool that measures workplace policies and protections for LGBT employees.


This accomplishment is a reflection of our commitment to creating an inclusive work environment and improving our policies, programs, and benefits to better fit the needs of our diverse workforce. We are continually seeking new ways to ensure that all employees know that they are highly valued and that there is a place for everyone at AMD. The work we have done to encourage diversity and inclusion in our workplace leading up to and throughout this year has received recognition from the Texas Diversity Council and the Diversity Journal’s Diversity Leader Award, culminating now in this achievement of scoring a perfect 100 on the CEI.


You might be wondering how we earned this score…here are a few examples:

  • Our employee resource group program encourages employees with mutual interests to connect with each other. These groups, which range from our Pride LGBT and Allies group to the AMD Women’s Forum, have become a great opportunity for involvement for many employees and have been instrumental in helping shape our workplace.
  • Health benefits are another key focus for us. We have long offered comprehensive health coverage for all employees, including full benefits for domestic partners, and inclusive mental health resources. In 2017, we are introducing a new slate of medical benefits for transgender employees, including coverage for gender reassignment surgery for employees and their dependents.
  • AMD is also involved in public initiatives that align with our core values, like the Business Coalition for Equality, which supports the Equality Act, and Texas Competes, a group of Texas-based businesses working toward equality and inclusion. We believe it is important to publically support such efforts to affect change in society.


The diversity of our employees and their experiences and perspectives are essential to everything that we do at AMD. And, while we have made progress toward creating a workplace that is open and inclusive, we know that there is always more work to do.
