A Survivor is Born


Tomb Raider explores the intense and gritty origin story of Lara Croft and her ascent from a young woman to a hardened survivor. Armed only with raw instincts and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Lara must fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island to escape its relentless hold.


At the beginning of the story, we experience Lara embarking on her first job after graduating from University. She shows fear in the face of danger, initially lacking confidence in her own abilities and judgment. Still, we can see the seeds of what Lara will eventually become. She possesses a powerful sense of moral courage. She is clever, resourceful and determined.

    • The PC version of Tomb Raider has been developed in tandem between Crystal Dynamics and long-time partner Nixxes, and Square Enix are proud to be continuing this ten-year tradition. The relationship has spanned over a dozen PC titles, dating back to 2000. The PC edition also has the benefits of an ongoing partnership with AMD, with Tomb Raider extensively optimized to include unique AMD tech that supports highly realistic hair renders for Lara, AMD HD3D, AMD Eyefinity for capable PCs, and more.


In re-imagining Lara for the 2013 release of Tomb Raider wasn't just an opportunity to modernize the character, it was an opportunity to substantially advance in-game realism by tackling the long-standing challenge of unrealistic hair. Through painstaking collaboration between software developers at AMD and Crystal Dynamics, Tomb Raider proudly features the world's first real-time hair rendering technology in a playable game: TressFX Hair
